THE CHAPTERS |
Ron and Jeff pulled Joe Hardy into the
restroom. They hit him in the stomach and the head. Joe was a good
fighter for being such a little kid, but these two bullies were too big
and the restroom was too small. Soon Joe felt dizzy and he couldn’t
keep his eyes open anymore.
When they were done hitting him, Jeff peeked out the door. "Coast is clear," he said. Jeff and Ron carried Joe to the noisy space between the cars. Ron had watched the Conductor close the accordion covering over the space. He carefully pulled the handle and released the cover. It folded neatly against the train car and the boys could see the night sky around them. Ron climbed up a small ladder to the roof while Jeff pushed Joe up the ladder. Ron pulled Joe to the roof, but then he climbed back down. Ron closed the accordion covering again, making sure Joe couldn’t get back in the train. "That will teach the little Squirt a lesson!" said Ron as they went back into the train car.
Joe felt cold and started to shiver. His stomach and his head hurt. He tried to call for his mom, but it hurt to talk. Joe slowly opened his eyes. He could see trees flying past very fast. When he looked up, he could see the black sky and lots of stars. Joe tried to get up, but he felt too shaky. He got on his hands and knees and looked around. He suddenly felt very afraid. He was on top of a moving train! He laid down on his belly and hugged the roof of the train as much as he could. Joe knew his family wouldn’t know where to find him. He would have to find them. Joe remembered that he hadn’t gotten to the dining car yet when he was going back to his cabin. He thought it was the next car down. If he could just crawl to the dining car, maybe he could bang on a window and someone would help him? Joe swallowed hard and started slowly sliding on his belly along the roof of the car. The train rocked and the wheels screeched. Joe was terrified, but he kept moving forward. Finally, Joe reached the gap between the cars. The covering was soft and Joe didn’t think it could hold his weight. How was he going to get across to the dining car? Had he crawled all this way for nothing? He wasn’t a baby anymore but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t keep from crying. "Should’a stayed in the cabin with Frank!" Joe cried. "Now I’m stuck up on this stupid roof! I’m sore, I’m cold and I’m hungry! This stinks!" He put his head down and cried. After a few minutes, Joe carefully sat up. He studied the space between the train cars while he wiped his eyes and nose on the sleeve of his sweatshirt. "Bet that’s no wider than the posts on the Morton’s back fence, and I can jump them easy," thought the blond boy. "I only need to stand up for a few minutes. Then I just run and jump." Joe bit his lip. He knew it probably wasn’t the wisest thing to do, but he wasn’t getting any warmer on that roof, either. Joe crawled back a few feet. He
carefully stood up on the swaying train roof. Taking a deep breath, he
ran as hard as he could and jumped over the space between the cars. Joe
almost made a good landing, but the roof was wet and his feet slid out
from under him. Joe felt himself sliding off the roof!
