CHAPTER 11

"That’s my baby!" Laura Hardy cried, staring at Joe’s small body as it banged against the side of the train.

"Get a window open!" called out one of the waiters.

Mr. Hardy dashed to the window closest to his son. He quickly pulled the window down and climbed up on a table.

"Joey! Hold on Son! Daddy’s coming!" Fenton cried above the train noises. Joe nodded and tightened hid grip on the thin rail above the windows.

Mr. Hardy reached up, wrapping his strong arms around Joe’s legs and waist. He felt someone holding onto his legs, too. He looked to see the Conductor, Frank and a waiter holding onto him.

"Let go, Joe! I’ve got you!" Mr. Hardy called. Joe squeezed his eyes shut and let go of the rail. He felt himself fall slightly, but then felt himself being wrapped in his father’s arms.

As they climbed back into the dining car, everyone applauded. Joe didn’t care. He just hugged his daddy’s neck as tight as he could.

"Joe? Maybe you can tell us what happened?" Mr. Hardy gently asked.

"Not until a doctor looks at him," Mrs. Hardy said, seeing the bruising on his face.

"Let’s take the child to the infirmary," said the Conductor. Mr. Hardy agreed and the family followed him down the aisle and into the next train car.

Joe was examined by Dr. Rhodes. He said the boy was bruised bad and would be sore for a few days, but nothing was broken. Joe was fed some warm chicken noodle soup and crackers. He was feeling pretty sleepy when he was done eating, but told his family what had happened and how he got to the dining car.

"That was very dangerous," Mr. Hardy said. Joe frowned and tears filled his eyes. He had done the only thing he could think to do!

Mr. Hardy smiled and kissed his son’s forehead. "It was dangerous Joe, but it was also quick thinking and very brave." Joe smiled and drifted off to sleep.

The train stopped in Salt Lake City, Utah the next morning. The Hardy family was glad to know that Jeff and Ron Bell were being taken to the police station. They had tried to kill Joe and that was a very serious crime.

Frank was sorry to say goodbye to Larry. He was a nice boy and Frank hoped that Larry would be okay.

Joe was still very sore, but the Mr. and Mrs. Hardy thought it would be best if they took Joe home. Mr. Hardy made arrangements for them all to fly home in a plane.

On the long flight back to Bayport, Frank sat beside his sleeping brother. He was glad they were going home. They would have the whole summer to play with their friends now.

Joe opened his eyes and looked at Frank.

"Sorry our vacation got ruined," Joe said.

"It wasn’t your fault, Joe," Frank shook his head. "Besides, it’ll be great to see all the guys at home." Frank smiled.

"We’ll have a story to tell them!" Joe grinned.

"Yeah," Frank agreed, "The Great Train Mystery!"
