"Hello boys!" Laura Hardy
greeted her two sons. "What have you been up to since we came back on
board the train?" Frank took the opportunity to tell his mother about
all the things he and Joe had discovered about the train, hoping Joe would
quickly grab a few valuables.
Joe moved behind his mother as Frank kept her attention. He heard the shower on in the bathroom and knew his dad wouldn’t be out for several minutes, at least. Joe quickly scanned the room for anything of value. Having grabbed several items, Joe nodded to the door. Frank caught the motion and finished his conversation. "You two need to be back here by 9 o’clock," Mrs. Hardy said as the boys left the room. Frank and Joe checked the hallway and hurried to the last car of the train. They cautiously looked behind to make sure Ron and Jeff were following them. They gave each other a high five when they saw Ron and Jeff entering the car as they moved into the last one. "Hurry and get the tape ready, Frank!" Joe cried, looking toward the door and expecting Ron and Jeff to come through. Frank nodded and got the blank tape set up in the machine, and then he turned it on and tucked it under his legs to hide it. "Here they come!" Joe whispered. "Hey, you guys!" Jeff called out. "Sh-h-h! Stupid!" Joe said, "You’re gonna give our hiding place away. What are you doing here anyway?" "You think you’re so smart, Squirt," Ron bragged, "Me and Jeff have been following you all night!" "You saw us?" Frank asked, pretending to be amazed. "Yeah," Jeff said, "and if you share the stuff with us, we won’t tell on you! What did you get?" "Why should we share with you? We did all the work!" Joe asked. "Besides, we’ve got a reputation here," Frank said, sounding tough. "We’re good at what we do and nobody will believe you anyway!" The two older boys looked at each other and considered what Frank said. "Look," Ron finally said, "If you share your stuff with us, we’ll share all our stuff with you." "What stuff? You’re no thief!" Joe stated, folding his arms. "Yes we are!" Jeff said with a grin, "You know that gold watch that was stolen from the dining car? We did that!" "No way," Frank said, "My dad said some little red-haired kid took that watch." "Naw! That’s our stupid half-brother Larry," Ron said, "We just told everyone he stole it ‘cause he took it out of our room." Frank and Joe looked at each other and could hardly hold back smiles. They had the proof they needed to clear Larry’s name! "So let’s see what you got," Jeff said. Joe opened his handkerchief and they all looked. There was a man’s watch, a pearl necklace, pearl earrings and a gold money clip with $220.00 in it. Jeff started reaching for the cash but Joe was quicker and stuffed the handkerchief back in his pocket. "No way," the blonde Hardy boy said, "We meet back here in the morning, right after breakfast." "Bring all your stuff with you and we’ll divide it up," Frank added. Jeff and Ron agreed, and then left. Joe and Frank quickly raced to their parent’s room to tell them what was going on.
