CHAPTER 11

"Laura? Did you see where I put my watch?" Fenton Hardy asked when he came out of the bathroom.

"On the dresser with my jewelry, dear," Mrs. Hardy said.

"It’s not here. Neither is my money clip or your pearls," Mr. Hardy said, looking on the floor to see if the items had fallen.

"That’s very strange. I know I set my necklace and earrings here, and I’m sure you put your things there before you went into the bathroom," Mrs. Hardy said.

"Did you leave the room?" Mr. Hardy asked. "Perhaps the boy who stole the watch from the dining car got in here."

"I never left and the only other people in here were our boys," Laura answered. She looked at Fenton. Where did their belongings go?

Frank and Joe ran as quickly as possible back to their parent’s room. Joe hoped that maybe they didn’t even miss the jewelry or money yet. His hopes were dashed when he and Frank saw the Conductor enter their parent’s room.

"We’re gonna be in trouble, Frank!" Joe cried, "We never should have taken Mom and Dad’s things without telling them! I had a bad feeling about this from the beginning!"

"Let’s just go explain it all," Frank said, "Dad will understand and once we show him the tape, he won’t be mad at all. Come on, you’ll see!" Joe followed Frank but wasn’t sure his brother was right.

"…and we’re sure everything was right here. I can’t think of any way our things could have been taken without our knowing about it," Mr. Hardy was explaining to the train Conductor.

"Ah, Dad?" Frank said.

"Hello boys," Mr. Hardy greeted, "I need you both to go next door to your cabin and stay put until I’m finished here."

"But, Dad," Joe began, "We really need to talk to you right now. It’s important!" Mr. Hardy looked carefully at the boys.

"Sir," he addressed the Conductor, "This will just take a minute. Please excuse me." Mr. Hardy ushered the boys into the hallway and then into their room next door.

"Alright, this had better be good to interrupt us like you did," Mr. Hardy said, sitting on the lower berth.

Joe looked at his brother and then pulled the handkerchief from his pocket. Joe handed it to his father. Perplexed, Fenton unwound the handkerchief and looked inside.

"You took these without permission, Joe?" Mr. Hardy asked.

"Yes, Sir, but for…" Joe started to say.

"Do you realize what kind of trouble you have caused? I reported that these things were stolen!" Mr. Hardy said.

"Dad, we have a good explanation!" Frank said, seeing that Joe was about to cry.

"Let’s hear it," Mr. Hardy said sternly. Frank quickly explained all that had happened the past few days. He told his dad about the watch, Larry Bell’s brothers and the plan he and Joe carried out that night. Frank then gave his dad the tape recorder they had borrowed from their mother. Mr. Hardy rewound the tape and played it. When it was over, he grinned at his two boys.

"You two are absolutely incredible!" he said.
