CHAPTER 11

The next morning, after breakfast, the Hardy family, Larry, and his parents met in the Conductor’s office. It was decided that Frank and Joe would meet with Jeff and Ron as planned. Mr. Hardy would ‘catch’ all four boys exchanging the stolen items.

Mrs. Hardy didn’t like the idea of putting Frank and Joe in the middle of things, but finally agreed that it was probably the only way to stop Jeff and Ron from continuing to steal.

Mr. and Mrs. Bell felt very badly about their son’s behavior, but felt even worse that they believed Jeff and Ron’s lies about Larry. Larry was just happy that his parents knew the truth.

Mr. Bell agreed to have Jeff and Ron return all the stolen items, and then he would keep the boys locked in their cabin for the rest of the trip. They would have to talk to the police when they arrived at home.

After the meeting, Frank and Joe went to the last train car to meet with Ron and Jeff. Joe once again carried the handkerchief with his parent’s possessions, but felt better this time since they knew Joe had them. They had added a few more things as well, so they could pretend they had stolen things before, too.

"There you guys are," Ron said as the Hardy brothers climbed into the seats. "We thought you chickened out on us!"

"We’re not chickens!" Joe cried, feeling angry.

"So let’s see what you guys have," Frank said, putting a hand on Joe’s arm to calm him.

Ron opened a small backpack and started pulling items out. Joe and Frank couldn’t believe all the rings, watches, wallets and money that came out of the pack.

"Put your stuff here, too," Jeff said, pointing to the pile on the floor, "Then we can divide it all up!" Joe added the items from the handkerchief slowly, wondering what was taking his dad so long.

Just then, Joe felt a strong hand on his shoulder. He glanced up and looked into his father’s dark brown eyes.

"Just what are you boys up to here?" Mr. Hardy asked.

"T-these guys are tryin’ to sell us some of this stuff," Ron said in his best little kid voice, "I think they stole it!"

"Put it all in the backpack and we’ll get this all figured out in the Conductor’s office," Mr. Hardy said. He gave Joe’s shoulder a little squeeze. Joe hid a smile, but he knew his dad was really proud of him and Frank.

In the office, Jeff and Ron Bell stared at Frank and Joe as the whole story came out in the open. They couldn’t believe they’d been tricked and caught by two little kids!

Frank, Joe and Larry were invited to tour the engine of the train with the Conductor as a reward for their efforts to catch Ron and Jeff.

That night, after supper, the Conductor made a speech in the dining car about the Hardy boys and their excellent detective work. Frank and Joe blushed at all the attention. They were just glad that everything turned out alright for their new friend Larry. The Chef served the boys special "Hero" sundaes for dessert that night.
