The next day, the train had reached
Denver, Colorado. The Hardy family enjoyed a day of fishing at a beautiful
lake in the Rocky Mountains.
Joe was excited to see real mountain goats on one of the winding roads back to the train station. Frank had taken a whole roll of pictures on his new camera during the day. When they finally boarded the train late in the afternoon, they were tired. Mr. and Mrs. Hardy decided to take a short nap before dinner. As the train began to move, they quickly fell asleep. Frank decided to just stay in his cabin and read a book. Joe tried to nap, then he tried reading his comic books, but he was too restless. "I’m going to try and find Larry," Joe told his brother, "Maybe he’ll play air- hockey with me." "Okay, but don’t be late for supper," Frank said.
Joe wandered through several train cars, but couldn’t find Larry. He finally went back to the recreation car and played a few video games. Joe heard his stomach growl loudly and he giggled, realizing how hungry he was. He decided it was time to head back so he could eat supper with his family. Joe headed back toward the car where his cabin was located. He was passing through a nearly empty car when he suddenly felt very nervous. Joe looked around but didn’t see anything. He decided to walk faster and hurried to the end of the car, near the tiny restrooms. As Joe passed the door to the men’s room, two arms shot out and grabbed him, pulling him inside the little restroom before he could call for help.
"Frank? It’s time to go to the dining car," Mrs. Hardy said as she looked into Frank and Joe’s cabin. "Joe’s not here," Frank said, "He went to find Larry." "That’s okay," Mrs. Hardy said, "His stomach will tell him it’s time to eat and he’ll come to the dining car if he doesn’t find us here." Frank put his book away and left with his parents.
The Hardy family had just sat down when Larry Bell came running up to their table. "Hello Larry," Mr. Hardy greeted, "Would you like to join us?" "No, Sir," Larry said, shaking his head, "Ah, where’s Joe?" "Oh, he’ll be along as soon as he gets hungry," said Mrs. Hardy. Larry bit his lip. "I don’t want you to worry, but Jeff and Ron got out of their room. Dad’s been looking for them all afternoon." Mr. Hardy frowned. This wasn’t good. Ron and Jeff were very angry about Frank and Joe getting them in trouble. Maybe they had something to do with Joe being late for supper. Before they could move, another passenger yelled. "There’s a little boy hanging from the side of the train!" the man cried. Sure enough, Fenton Hardy turned and saw his 10-year-old son hanging onto the edge of the train above the dining car windows.
