CHAPTER 5

"This is going to be great," thought Frank Hardy as he and his brother Joe looked out the window of the family car. The boys were on vacation with their mom and dad. They were very excited because they were in the wild, wild west! The boys wanted to see some real live cowboys and Indians. Frank hoped that he would find a few Indian arrowheads for his collection. Joe wanted to see a real buffalo. Boy, was this going to be a great vacation.

As the boys watched anxiously from the window of the car, their dad pulled into an old western town called "Tumbleweed Pass". As soon as they passed by the sign, a man wearing a cowboy hat and riding a black mule rode up to Mr. Hardy’s window.

"Say Pard’ner," the cowboy said, "are ya all stayin’ here in Tumbleweed Pass fer a spell?"

"Yes Sir, we have reservations at the Tumbleweed Hotel here on Cactus Drive," answered Mr. Hardy.

"That’s mighty fine," said the cowboy, "but ya gotta park yer motor car behind the Blacksmith Shop. No motor cars are allowed in Tumbleweed Pass."

"We’re very sorry, Sir," replied Mr. Hardy.

"Don’t worry yerself none young fella. Jes follow me. My name’s Amos and this here is my faithful friend, Jeremiah. We’ll show ya where to park yer motor car."

Amos and his mule led the Hardy family behind the Blacksmith Shop on the outskirts of Tumbleweed Pass. There were about a dozen other cars parked in the field. As Mr. Hardy and the boys unloaded their luggage from the car, 10-year-old Frank noticed a horse drawn wagon coming in their direction. A lady in a red-checkered shirt and long denim skirt was driving the wagon.

"Whoa, Isabella!" called the lady driver to her horse. "My name’s Annie and if’n ya got a mind to, I’ll haul ya and yer gear to the hotel fer ya."

"Thank you kindly, Ma’am," said Mr. Hardy.

"Fact is," Annie said, "I’d say there’s room up front here fer the missus, and ya can hope in back there with those fine lookin’ young ‘uns."

In a few minutes, Annie’s wagon was in front of the Tumbleweed Hotel. It looked like the old buildings in the old western movies on TV. All the folks walking around town were real friendly, waving to the Hardys or saying, "Howdy". They were all dressed in old fashion, western-style clothes. Mrs. Hardy really liked the long, fancy dresses the ladies were wearing, but Frank and nine-year-old Joe liked the holsters and six-shooters the men were all wearing.

Upstairs in their room, the boys explored every nook and cranny. They jumped on the big feather beds ‘til their mom made them stop. They sat in the claw-footed bathtub (without water, of course). They took turns pulling the long chain on the old fashion toilet. Except for the telephone on the nightstand beside their parent’s bed, everything looked very old.

"This is so cool!" said Frank, "It’s like we went into a time machine or something!"

"Hey, look what I found!" called out Joe from their parent’s room. Everyone went to see what Joe had discovered. He was standing in front of a big closet. Inside were lots of old, western clothes and accessories, including holsters and six-shooters!

"Look, here’s a note," said Mrs. Hardy. She read the words out loud:

"Dear Friends,

Use these clothes and feel at home,

While in our little town you roam."

The boys excitedly began undressing. Frank put on a red shirt with white fringe on the sleeves, blue jeans, and brown cowboy boots. He found a brown cowboy hat that fit perfectly over his dark, brown hair. Joe wore a white shirt with a blue suede vest over it. He put on blue jeans and black cowboy boots. He wore a black cowboy hat to match. Mrs. Hardy found a satin maroon dress with short, lacy sleeves and matching lace around the hem. She put on a maroon hat decorated with a big, white feather. She found white lace-up boots that fit her and a fancy, lace umbrella, called a parasol, to carry. Mr. Hardy looked handsome in a black-fringed vest over a white shirt, blue jeans, black boots and a black felt cowboy hat. The three guys also put on their holsters and six-shooters!

Once they were all dressed, they went to the hotel dining room to eat supper. It was crowded, but they found an empty table and sat down. It was just like Frank and Joe imagined. Everyone, even the waitresses, were dressed like the old west. The Hardys enjoyed a western supper of tender roast beef, sweet ‘taters, beans and sarsaparilla tea to drink. It was scrumptious.

After supper, they went to the Theater and watched a funny western play. Frank and Joe laughed so hard their sides hurt! Afterwards, they walked through town, and then went back to the hotel for the night.
