CHAPTER 5

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, the Hardy family walked to the "Outpost". That’s where Amos was meeting them for a mule ride.

"Mornin’ folks," called out Amos cheerfully, "Fine day fer a ride!"

Mr. Hardy mounted a gray mule named "Ezekial"; Mrs. Hardy’s mule was white and named "Priscilla". Frank and Joe sat together on a brown mule named "Moses". Amos led them out of town on his own mule, "Jeremiah". They headed toward a winding path through a nearby canyon.

They rode several hours through the canyon, where Joe got his first glimpse of real buffalo! From there, they traveled up onto a plateau. The dry, barren ground looked like it went on forever, but soon they were at the foot of some mountains. There were lots of trees and green grass beside a quiet little stream. Amos suggested they stop and have lunch by the stream before heading back to town.

Amos unloaded a picnic basket that the "Outpost" had provided for the trip. Mrs. Hardy laid out a checkered tablecloth. Joe found four big stones to hold down the corners sp the tablecloth wouldn’t blow away. Frank and his dad watered the mules. Soon Amos called them to come and eat.

Just as Frank was turning to head toward the picnic, he saw something stuck in the ground near the stream. He picked it up and couldn’t believe his eyes. It was the most perfect arrowhead he’d ever seen!

"Awesome!" Frank shouted as he ran to show his brother his treasure.

"That there’s a Shawnee arrowhead," Amos informed them, "Shawnees were all over these parts years ago. Nary a few left now, scattered here and there. There’s a group of ‘em not far from here. Moved west from Kentucky after white folks started sett’lin’ there."

Frank gave the arrowhead to his dad for safekeeping. He sat down beside Joe and enjoyed a delicious lunch of fried chicken, cheese, apples and homemade bread and honey. They boys remembered to say thank you and helped Amos and their mom clean up, while their dad finished watering the mules.

"Dad, can we go explore around here?" Frank asked, with Joe standing eagerly beside him. Dad asked Amos if it was safe.

"Sure," Amos said, "long as ya don’t wander too far, young ‘uns."

"Whoopie!" shouted the boys together. They gave their dad a quick hug and ran to tell their mother good-bye.

"You two look after each other," Mrs. Hardy warned. "Frank, you know how quickly Joey can wander off. You must keep an eye on him!"

"Oh Mom!" Joe said with a frown, "I’m not a baby any more. I can take care of myself!"

"Good," she said, "Then you can keep an eye on Frank." She playfully ruffled Joe’s blond hair and gave Frank a wink. They kissed their mom and headed for the nearby woods.

Frank and Joe were having so much fun, they lost track of time. They were busy exploring and discovering all kinds of neat things. Frank had found two more really nice arrowheads and a big, white and brown eagle feather. Joe had found some pretty rocks with red, yellow, brown and black stripes. He was going to give them to his mom. Joe also found the skull of a dead rabbit, cleaned clear to the bone. He wanted to take it home to show his friends, but Frank didn’t think their mother would like it.

"I’m too hot," said Joe after a while, "Let’s go get a drink of cold water from the stream!"

"Good idea," agreed Frank, "Mr. Amos is prob’ly ready to go back now, too." They started walking, but suddenly realized they had no way of knowing which way they had come from. All the trees looked the same in every direction!
