Mrs. Hardy was really getting worried.
Mr. and Mrs. Hardy and Amos had been searching for the boys for over an
hour. They had called their names over and over again. The boys were
nowhere to be found. Mrs. Hardy sat on a nearby rock and started to cry.
Mr. Hardy was worried too, but he put his strong arms around her and held
her close.
"Now don’t go frettin’ none folks," said Amos, "Those scalawag kids can’t be too far. I’m a ‘gonna put Jeremiah on the trail lookin’ fer ‘um. Ole Jeremiah, he’s part bloodhound, ya know!" Amos and his mule set off and went looking for the missing Hardy boys. * * * "We’re lost and it’s your fault!" cried Joe to his older brother. "Stop crying like some girl and help me figure out where we are, will ya?" Frank said to Joe. Joe shook his head back and forth. "I’m not movin’ from here!" he said, "Mom and Dad will come and find me, then you’ll be in trouble for getting us lost!" Frank didn’t want to go looking around by himself. He had to get Joe to come with him somehow. He looked at his little brother who was trying hard not to cry. "Joe," Frank said, "If you come with me, I’ll give you one of those arrowheads I found." "I don’t want a stupid arrowhead!" Joe cried, "I want Mom and Dad and I want then now!" Frank frowned. Sometimes his brother could be such a stubborn brat! He’d have to trick Joe into going with him. "Joe," Frank said with a sly smile, "If you stay here by yourself, a lion or bear will come and eat you right up!" Joe’s eyes grew wide. He didn’t know if Frank was telling the truth or not, but he sure wasn’t going to stay around and find out! He got right to his feet and took off to follow Frank. They hadn’t gone very far when they heard a sound in the trees nearby. "D-d-do mountain lions make a noise like t-t-that?" asked Joe. "I-I-I don’t know…" Frank started to say, but was interrupted by the bushes moving beside him. "Run, Joe! Run!" Frank shouted, grabbing his brother’s arm. They both ran as fast as they could. * * * Amos stopped near the stream, getting off of Jeremiah and looked at Mr. and Mrs. Hardy. "I’m mighty sorry ‘bout this, folks," he began, "but night’s a comin’ and we ain’t ‘bout ta find yer young ‘uns in the dark. We bess set up camp fer the night right here." "But, my boys! My babies!" Mrs. Hardy cried, "They’re still out there! We can’t quit!" "Honey," said Mr. Hardy, "We can’t find them in the dark, but they might find us. We’ll build a fire and pray that they can see it." Amos and Mr. Hardy built a big fire. Mrs. Hardy stayed close to the fire to keep it burning bright. Mr. Hardy and Amos continued searching for the boys, but kept the fire in sight so they wouldn’t get lost to. Mrs. Hardy stirred the embers of the fire and prayed that her boys were safe. * * * Frank had found a big hollow tree that they could both fit in. Cold, tired and thirsty, they curled together in the tree, Frank putting his arms around Joe. The woods around them made a lot of strange noises. Joe shivered and Frank clung tighter to his brother. How would they ever find Mom and Dad? Would they ever get home again? Suddenly their wild west adventure didn’t seem like much fun. Even though they were tired, they couldn’t sleep, thinking some wild animal might find them. Frank heard Joe crying softly. "Joe?" Frank said, "Let’s tell each other some funny stories. That will help us not be so scared." "I’m t-too afraid," cried Joe. "Then you just listen, okay?" Frank said, and began telling a funny story about their friend Chet Morton back home. Frank told stories and listened to Joe’s giggles until they couldn’t keep their eyes open any longer. Both boys drifted off to sleep in the hollow tree. * * * Mrs. Hardy kept the fire going well
into the night. Mr. Hardy and Amos would come back to the fire and check
with her, and then head out again in a different direction. By midnight,
the men were exhausted and the three of them went to sleep, but kept the
fire burning.
