Something woke Frank. What was that
noise? Maybe a bear was sneaking up on them! He tried to wake up his
sleeping brother, but before Joe woke up, a face peered at Frank from
outside the tree.
"Ah-h-h!" screamed Frank, trying to push his way deeper into the trunk. Joe woke up hearing Frank’s scream and saw the face too. Both boys closed their eyes and screamed again! Finally Frank felt brave enough to peek at the opening of the tree. The face was still there. It was a brown face with black hair and very dark eyes. The face was smiling at him. Another face appeared under the first one. The second face was brown, too, but it was a girl’s face. "It’s okay," said the girl, "We are friends. Come out please." Joe opened one eye and peeked at the faces, but then looked at his brother. He wasn’t going anywhere unless Frank went first! At first, Frank didn’t move. Mom and Dad had taught them to beware of strangers and these two faces were certainly strangers! Frank looked into his brother’s wide eyes. "What do you think, Joe?" Frank whispered, "If they wanted to hurt us, they could have easily pulled us out of here." Joe didn’t say a word, but nodded his head. The girl disappeared for a minute, but then came back with a woven red and blue blanket. "Come out. Here is a blanket to warm you up. It’s okay," said the girl. "My name is Prairie Flower. This is my brother. His name is Running Wolf. He saw you in the woods earlier today, but he doesn’t know enough white man words. He came to get me." Frank finally moved around his brother and crawled out of the tree. Prairie Flower and Running Wolf were wearing buckskin clothes with pretty beads on the fringes. ‘I bet they’re real Indians,’ Frank realized. "Are you real Indians?" asked Frank, as Joe crawled out and stood beside him. Joe grabbed tightly to Frank’s hand. "Yes," said Prairie Flower, "we are of the Shawnee People. My family lives nearby, at the Mission School. I learned white man’s words from the missionaries." "We know about missionaries from church, right Frank?" Joe said. "Right," Frank agreed, pulling the warm blanket around them. They started to follow Prairie Flower and Running Wolf. Frank realized that the woods weren’t as scary when you were with someone who knew where they were going. It wasn’t long before they came to a row of neat, little wooden buildings. "Hello children," called a man’s voice from one of the doorways. He looked old to Frank and he wasn’t an Indian. He walked out to meet his young visitors. "Are these the boys Running Wolf saw this afternoon?" asked the man. "Yes, Pastor," replied Prairie Flower, "Running Wolf came to get me and we tracked them to the old, hollow tree." "Well, you two have had quite an adventure tonight. Come inside and warm up," the man smiled. "What are your names?" the man asked. "I’m Frank Hardy and this is my brother Joe," Frank offered. Once inside, Running Wolf began speaking to the older man in a language neither Frank nor Joe could understand. The man frowned and nodded his head up and down. "Frank, Joe," he finally spoke again, "my name is Pastor Harrison. I’m a missionary here. Running Wolf thinks he saw a fire down in the valley below the mountain. I think that might be your people looking for you. I’m going with Running Wolf to bring them here." The missionary introduced the boys to his wife. She had a happy face that reminded Joe of his grandmother. After Pastor Harrison and Running Wolf left, Mrs. Harrison fed the boys some cookies and warm milk, then tucked them into a bed in the back of the school where they lived. By the time Running Wolf and Pastor Harrison made it down the mountain, the sun was just coming up. They reached the camp where Amos and Mr. and Mrs. Hardy had spent a restless night. Mrs. Hardy cried tears of joy when
she knew her two boys were all right. Mr. Hardy hugged his wife and shook
hands with the missionary. They mounted the mules and headed for the
mission school.
