CHAPTER 5

"This is a very nice place, Mr. Harrison."

Frank Hardy opened his eyes. That was his daddy’s voice! He quickly woke Joe and they both scrambled out into the mission schoolroom where the voice had come from.

"Well," said Mr. Hardy, "My long, lost cowpokes!" Frank and Joe ran into their father’s strong arms and wrapped themselves around him.

"Frank! Joey! My boys!" Mrs. Hardy cried, seeing her precious sons. She grabbed them both and started kissing them and hugging them. Frank and Joe both blushed.

"I was plum worried sick over them two young ‘uns,’ Amos was telling Mrs. Harrison.

"Well, it seems the Good Lord was keeping an eye on them," she said, than added, "At least, He sent Running Wolf and Prairie Flower to watch over them!"

* * *

The rest of their week in Tumbleweed Pass was a lot of fun for Frank and Joe Hardy. They watched a rodeo, went to a buffalo ranch, rode horses, went swimming and saw a real gun fight (they used fake bullets, but it sure looked real!)

On Thursday night, The Hardys were invited to the Mission School for an anniversary celebration. Pastor Harrison had been there for five years!

Frank and Joe could hardly believe their eyes. Other than the Harrisons, the Hardys were the only ones who weren’t Indians! Prairie Flower introduced Frank and Joe to some of her friends. The boys met Spotted Deer, Shining Star and Golden Fawn. They ate Indian food like, wild mushrooms, roasted squirrel and baked corn. The evening passed far too quickly and soon it was time to return to Tumbleweed Pass.

Early the next morning, the boys reluctantly put on their own clothing and packed their suitcases. They helped their dad load their belongings into Annie’s wagon, and then climbed aboard for the ride out to their car.

They had just finished unloading the suitcases from the wagon to the car, when Joe noticed a horse coming across the field.

"Look there!" he said, pointing.

"I think ya’ll got comp’ny," Annie said.

"It’s Prairie Flower and Running Wolf!" Frank cried, spying the two riders on the painted pony. The boys stepped out into the field to greet their new friends.

Running Wolf helped his sister off the pony. She walked up to Frank and Joe.

"We wanted to see you before you left for home," she said. She walked up to Frank and placed a beaded necklace around his neck.

"El O heema sabat," Prairie Flower said, "I give you the name of ‘Eagle’s Wing’. You protected your brother well." She smiled and turned to Joe.

"To you, I give the name, ‘Laughing Water’," she smiled, placing a necklace on him, too, "When my brother and I were looking for you, we heard your laughter in the tree."

"My brother has gifts for you," Prairie Flower said, placing a quiver, bow and four arrows with real arrowheads on them, in Frank’s arms.

Joe received a small mallet and drum, beautifully decorated with feathers and beads. Both boys thanked their friends for the special gifts and promised to write to each other.

As they began the long drive home, the boys were unusually quiet. Both were reflecting on their wild west adventure.

"You know what Joe?" Frank asked, peering across the seat at his brother. Joe looked at Frank.

"If we hadn’t gotten lost in the woods, we’d never of met Prairie Flower, Running Wolf or their friends."

"Yeah," Joe had to agree, "We wouldn’t of met the missionaries either."

Both sat quietly for a few minutes, pondering.

"Frank?" Joe asked, glancing back at his brother, "I was really scared in those woods, but I’m sure glad you were there with me."

"Hey," Frank grinned, "That’s what big brothers are for, Joe!"
