"I heard that if a person is scared badly enough, then they sometimes get to see or hear a ghost. Especially if the ghost is unhappy" Bea tightened her hand on his arm making tears spring to his eyes.

"Did you know that your dad killed my dad right in this very house! Shocking isn’t it! And all because my dad fancied your mom!" she hauled Joe to his feet and pulled him out of the room.

Joe’s breath came in gasps as he struggled to pull free of her grip on his arm. Tears streamed down his face and he blinked hard to clear his vision. Frank hadn’t come back.

What had happened to him? Joe tried to call out but no sound came.

Bea led him to the top of the stairs and stopped outside the attic door. She looked down at the little boy, pleased to be scaring him. She was so angry with this family. They didn't understand her loss. They were the reason she didn't know her father. Some one had to pay for her pain. She felt tired of suffering.

Bea opened the door and pulled Joe inside and into the dark dank air of the attic. This was Joe's least favorite place to be. He had avoided it with every excuse under the sun. He never told anyone in his family of his fear of the dark or this attic. Now he felt paralyzed with fear and dread.

As they stood in the dark, a strange smell alerted Joe. He tried to peer into the darkness to identify the shadowy objects around him. Bea saw him react to something and pushed him stumbling into the depths of the attic ahead of her. She believed in ghosts and had had a wild and crazy hope of catching a glimpse of her father’s ghost.
