THE CHAPTERS |
A small boy ran quickly along the
roadside toting a small cloth bag on his side. Cars swished past with out
a second glance on this boy who seemed to have a destination. He was in no
hurry and played with sticks along the wayside.
By and by the boy turned off the main road and down a small lane with towering brick walls on either side. He slowed and a small flash of worry played over his brows. As he walked, he paused to pull from his bag, a long heavy key that he gripped awkwardly in his small hand. Rounding a short bend, he came to a large wooden door with two brass knockers. Inserting the key he turned the lock and pushed hard to open the door. A dark room with low beams met his gaze as he stepped in and closed the heavy door behind him. As his eyes adjusted he saw a frail bent man sitting in semi darkness in a large arm chair. With one boney finger, the man called the boy to stand at his knee. "You want to return home, don't you boy?" croaked the old man. The little boy nodded and stood silently in the dark. The old man reached for the boys shoulder and struggled to stand beside the child. He wobbled and steadied himself. Looking down at the boy he felt sadness and relief. It was time. Together they walked slowly across the room to a small door that seemed the right size for the boy only. The old man stopped and bent his head to the boy. He spoke softly as he saw tears in the boy’s eyes. "Time has made way for you to return today. You will have to remind them who you are and they won’t believe you. For them, you died two years ago. The more they believe, the more real you will become until I will no longer have a hold on your soul. Good luck to you. I will be watching", the old man gently pushed the small boy to the door and watched him disappear behind it as if by magic. The old man sighed and returned to his chair to wait. "Good luck, Joe!" the old man whispered before nodding off to sleep in his dark room.
