THE CHAPTERS |
Frank was cleaning his room before
getting ready for bed. There were two beds in his room, one was his and
the other had been Joe's.
Frank still believed his little brother would return even though the police said they’d found a small burnt body in the woods two years ago. Frank wouldn’t believe it to be true as the police could only presume it was his brother but they didn't really know. Mr. and Mrs. Hardy were silent and devastated. They moved through life with a sense of depression. They kept their only child safe and sighed at his continued belief that his little brother still lived somewhere. Joe had been only four when he’d disappeared. Since the burnt body two years ago, there’d been no sign of him. Frank looked at the empty bed and sighed. He shut his eyes and tried to remember the sound of Joe's voice. "Frank" Franks eyes flew open having felt certain he heard a small boys voice. It sounded like Joe. He looked around and saw a faint play of light near the window. He squinted and tilted his head. A watery image stood before him looking very much like his little brother. Frank stood up slowly and stepped closer. "Joe", his voice croaked as he strained to see the figure properly. As he stared, the apparition got stronger until the little boy seemed to be solid and physically there. Tears welled in Franks eyes and he bolted forward to hug Joe. Joe accepted his brothers fierce hug with tears in his eyes. Frank seemed so much bigger than he’d remembered. They finally let go of each other and Frank stood back to look at Joe. He looked like a four year old still, thought Frank curiously. Joe looked so small and lost. His clothes were the same as he’d been wearing when he’d disappeared but they were dirty and ragged now. "Where have you been and how did you just appear like that?" asked Frank in confusion as he led his brother to sit on the bed. "I’ve been lost in a place where a man holds time still. I found him by accident two years ago. He needed help so I helped him. It didn't seem like that long ago but he said you will have known me to be gone for two years. I am a ghost to those who don't believe I have come back. If we can convince mom and dad that I’m here then the old man will let me stay and continue my life. If they don't believe in me then I’ll go back to him and leave you my ghost." Joe took a breath and slid off the bed. He wanted to get started. He stopped at the door looking back at Frank. "Thank you for believing in me!"
