CHAPTER 3

Frank and Joe entered the kitchen to find their parents sitting at the table talking. Mrs. Hardy looked up to see Frank enter looking flushed. She reached out and pulled her son to her for a hug. She was worried about him.

"What's wrong, darling?" Laura Hardy brushed his soft brown hair from his forehead.

Frank squirmed in his mothers arms and turned his attention to the doorway. "I found Joe!" he exclaimed excitedly. "We have to make you believe in him so he can come back to us!" Frank looked at his little brother and saw him start to fade as a sob escaped his mother’s lips. He turned to face her with a pained look on his face. "No, please don't cry, Mom" Frank begged clinging to his mothers arm. "We’ll lose him if you don't want to believe in him!"

Frank was desperate. Joe was fading slowly. His face was sad and small. Frank looking imploringly to his father, Fenton looked sadly at his son and stood up to go to him.

"Tell us where he is, Frank?" said Fenton quietly. He saw something in his son’s eyes that he’d not seen in two years.

Frank looked back to see Joe's image becoming more solid in the doorway. He smiled encouragingly at his little brother.

"Joe's standing by the door. Do you see him, Dad?" Frank pulled his father closer with him as his mother stood beside them. She gasped and tears streamed down her face as she thought she saw a little boy standing in the kitchen doorway.

Fenton gasped and went down on his knees before the little boy. Joe's eyes were big. He put his hand out to touch his father’s sleeve.

"Do you see me, Daddy?" Joe whispered.

Fenton scooped his son into his arms and rocked back and forth as his wife encircled them both.

The old man sighed. "I will see you in ninety years instead, Joe. Have a good life and thank you for helping me", the old man whispered as his head nodded in sleep.
