"Why don’t you do the dishes? I’ve
got stuff to do right now!" moaned Joe to his older brother, Frank.
Joe and his brother were house sitting for a new friend of theirs for the summer. The house was huge and most of the rooms were not in use as their friend, Morgan didn’t have enough stuff to fill them! Morgan was off in Germany doing an internship as a graphic artist. His house was tucked in the woods and hills of South Wales with a fantastic view of the sea a few miles away. The Hardy brothers had jumped at the idea of a whole summer without parents and their own freedom. Joe flopped into a chair at the kitchen table and pulled out a comic. As he started to relax and sink into his comic, a sudden cold wet dish cloth struck him in the head spraying water all over his comic. Joe bolted to his feet snatching the dish rag and hurling it at Franks back. It left a wet spot on his shirt and dropped to the floor. Frank roared and made a grab for his brother who dodged around the table. As he tried to make a run for the door, Frank hooked him around the waist and they fell to the floor. "We are both going to do the dishes before we enjoy anything else today! Is that clear?" said Frank as he pinned Joe to the floor. Joe squirmed around and tried to unbalance his brother. Frank pinned Joe's elbows to his sides stopping his squirming. "Is that clear?" Frank repeated. "Okay, Okay. Just get off me you lunatic!" Frank stood, giving his brother a hand and they got to work at their chores. It was great staying in such an old mansion, but Joe wished it came with a few modern convenience’s like a dishwasher! "Are we out of dish soap again?" complained Frank as he opened the cupboard and looked inside. "I thought I just bought some the other day. Where did it go?" "You start the water and I’ll go look in the store room at the end of the hall." said Joe as he rolled his sleeves up. Frank ran the tap while Joe left the kitchen and headed to the large store room that housed all the dried food and kitchen goods. He opened the door and stood staring at all the items on the shelves that lined every wall. The light started to dim and Joe felt a draft from somewhere. He shivered and made a mental note to tell Frank about getting some more light bulbs. He saw the dish soap on a top shelf and stepped up to get it down. As he reached up he was nearly scared out of his wits by the store room door slamming behind him with a gusty bang. He leaned against the shelf with his heart thudding in his chest. After taking a few deep breaths he turned to the door to take the soap back to Frank. The dish soap dropped beside Joe's feet as he opened his mouth and screamed. Hanging from a noose in the doorway was a woman in ancient clothing. The draft jostled her dead body gently and her head rolled unnaturally onto her chest as a trickle of blood wet her pale lips. Joe's heart hammered in his chest as he crumpled to the ground in a dead faint.
