"I’m keeping time to pay for my
debts" whispered Morgan in a pained voice. His hands gripped the
armrests until his fingertips were white. His clothes were out dated and
dusty.
"I don’t understand?" Joe moved closer even though his whole body shook with fear and dread. Something was very wrong. "You are not of this time. But you are taken back to me because you stand in my house. I invited you here to help me. For four hundred years I have been lost to time as it passed around me. Because of my mistakes I cannot go home. Will you help me?" Morgan’s eyes were pleading and vacant at the same time. His body sat rigid and upright as if racked with pain. His head was pressed hard against the head board. It looked like he was held completely against his will. "What must I do?" whispered Joe fearfully. The room seemed foreboding and watchful. Joe wished his brother was near. "Your brother cannot be part of this world. He did not see the woman I hurt. You did. You can help me." Morgan’s eyes grew darker and his voice was void of all feeling. Joe stared at him hard. "What did you do to her?" "She was my servant. Her children were starving and she stole food from me. I had to show discipline or my staff would have not been loyal to me. She hung in my pantry to be an example for the others." Joe felt a surge of hatred for Morgan and his eyes burned with tears for the woman and her family. Morgan watched Joe with deep black eyes. "Why does the wolf come?" said Joe trying to hide the edge that had crept into his voice. "After she was taken down, the wolf came to the borders of my land to torment me and send fear into my servants. He chased off all my friends and family. I was left with no one. He belongs to this land. That's what you must do for me. You must kill him so the spell of the woman can be broken and I can be free. The wolf fights for her only." Morgan’s head convulsed against the chair and his black eyes rolled in his head. Joe stepped back in fear and bumped into the little door. Turning he fled through it as Morgan’s cries of agony from his mental tortures climaxed to shrill screams. Back in the dark hallway, Joe ran hard back the way he’d come. When he found a wall in the darkness he turned around and felt the smooth wooden closet door beneath his fingers. He pushed into the room and saw Frank still in the act of searching for a weapon as if time had stood still. "Frank, I know what to do. You can stop searching now." Joe pulled the wardrobe from the door and
pushed the chair away as his brother gaped in horror. With one final
shudder, their bedroom door cracked and the wolf sprang inside with the
whites of its eyes flashing.
