"Chet! Be quiet or he’ll catch us!" hissed Joe as he led the way into his older brother's room. Frank was not home from school yet but he was due any minute so they had to be quick. Chet stood nervously in the doorway while Joe knelt under the bed and fumbled around with a small tin box. He opened it and sighed in frustration. Without turning to his friend he said, "Its no use, Chet, he’s probably got it with him."

Chet didn’t answer and Joe stood and turned to see Frank standing in front of Chet with his arms folded across his chest. He didn’t look pleased, and Joe could see he was grinding his teeth. He gulped and put the box on the bed.

"You’re home early, Frank!" smiled Joe nervously, "had a good day at school, did you?"

"You’re not leaving this room until you explain yourself!" Frank glowered down at his younger brother expectantly.

Joe shifted uncomfortably and glanced around the room for an alternative escape route if things got out of hand. Chet peered apologetically over Frank’s shoulder and took off down the stairs.

"You can’t do anything to me ‘cus Dad will be home soon!" countered Joe as he edged to the bathroom door.

Frank jumped to block his path and grabbed Joe, knocking him to the ground. Joe yelped and kicked, but Frank was bigger and sat on him holding his arms down.

"You were looking for those rings weren’t you?" demanded Frank as his little brother tried to squirm to freedom.

"They’re not yours, you know! Just cus you think they’re dangerous! They were given to both of us, remember!" shouted Joe as he gave up trying to get free. He lay still and relaxed until Frank rolled off him. Then he jumped up and grabbed the tin box from the bed before Frank could stop him.

"Tell me where the key is, or I’ll tell Dad you hit me!" said Joe angrily.

Sighing, Frank got to his feet and fumbled in his pocket. He pulled out a small gold key with a pearl handle. He hated it when Joe used threats to get his way. It had been a long time since they’d had a fist fight and he didn’t want to start now. Especially over something he felt was very dangerous to both of them.

Their grandfather had died two years ago and left the boys his most cherished possession, which turned out to be a tin box with a special gold key. Out of curiosity they had shut the lid and turned the key and then opened the lid again to see why it was so special. Inside the tin box had appeared two ornate ruby rings with their initials carved into the silver band. They had never put the rings on because of a warning written in the box. Frank had taken the box and closed the lid making the rings disappear. Joe had been desperate to try the rings but Frank had forbidden it because of the warning. Now Frank felt like the end of the world was near as he held out the small key.

Joe snatched it and shut the lid of the box and turned the key in the lock. He opened the lid and there lay the two rings as if they’d been there always. Joe reached in for the ring with his initials.

Frank leapt to his side and pulled his hand away. "NO, JOE!" he shouted, "The warning promises death to the wearers and that's us!"

"You don’t know that for certain, Frank! Where's your sense of curiosity anyway?" Joe pushed past his brother and reached for the ring as Frank watched in horror.

The ring slid easily on Joe's finger as if it had been made for him. He put his hand out to admire the ruby and turned to Frank to see his opinion. What he saw made his heart stop. Joe stared wildly around the room in confusion, looking for his brother but everything seemed to have changed so quickly that it was hard to get his bearings.

Suddenly Joe heard a rush of wind and then found himself falling backwards into the soft carpet. Something was very wrong as he fell. He seemed to have fallen into tall beige grass that stood up to his knees and all around and above him towered immense structures that disappeared into the darkness far above him. He heard a great rumbling sound and the ground shook with earthquake like tremors.

Joe struggled to stand and nearly jumped out of his skin as a huge face came down level with him. Joe gasped, stumbled backwards into the tall beige grass and fainted into utter blackness.
