Joe awoke with a pounding headache that made
him groan and roll over onto his side. Then in a rush he remembered the
ring and sat up too fast in a panic of realization. His head spun and he
saw little black dots behind his eyes. He took a deep breath and calmed
himself before opening his eyes.
He found he was sitting on a hard surface with what appeared at first glance to be a gigantic pencil lying next to him. He rubbed his eyes and stared and realized it really was a giant pencil. Propped up on the pencil was a piece of paper with large letters printed on it. It read as follows: ‘Joe, don’t freak out, but when you put on the ring you shrunk to about an inch tall. You fainted in surprise. I put you on my desk. Turn around slowly. I am sitting at the desk behind you.-Frank’ Joe slowly turned and saw a huge version of his older brother looming above him. Frank was watching him carefully with a worried look on his face. "Take the ring off and lets get you back to your normal size, okay Joe?" said Frank in a booming voice as he brought his face closer to his little brother. Joe stepped back and nodded. He reached down and started to pull the ring from his finger. Suddenly a piercing scream filled the air behind Frank and they both jumped. The box on the bed with the last ring seemed to be screaming at top volume. Joe dropped to his knees and covered his ears as Frank ran and picked up the box trying to silence it. Then he noticed a new inscription in the box. He read it and paled. Quickly turning to Joe he whispered, "Joe! Don’t take the ring off! This inscription states that if you take the ring off right away then you will suffer instant death and both rings will disappear forever!" Joe checked and was relieved to see the ring still on his finger. His heart pounded and he felt fear creeping through his blood. He looked up at Frank with trembling lips. "What am I supposed to do like this? Am I going to stay this way forever?" the thought terrified him and he sank to sit on the pencil with his head buried in his hands. "I’ll show you to Dad and he’ll know what to do! Come on, climb on my hand and you can ride in my shirt pocket." Frank laid out his hand palm up on the desk in front of Joe. His younger brother stepped nervously onto Franks hand and fought overwhelming dizziness as Frank raised him up to his shirt pocket. He climbed in and stood holding onto the rim as Frank went to find their father.
