Frank gasped and reached out to his unconscious brother.

"STOP!" shouted Fenton as he snatched his sons’ hand away.

"Don’t touch him just close your eyes and put the key in your hand. You’ll be connected to him as he travels. Just make sure you keep him on track before the sun rises or you’ll both die!" whispered Fenton. Frank did as he was told and closed his eyes, palming the small ornate key. It felt like he was caught in a rainstorm with strong winds making him feel unsteady on his own feet. He realized slowly that he was standing in an old courtyard in what could only be a small French village. Rubble lay all around him with debris from nearby shops and cottages littering the streets. A statue with a dried up fountain stood behind him looking like the only form of life in the desolate town. While he gazed around he thought he heard the sound of stamping feet. The sound grew louder until he was surrounded by a good twenty or more soldiers with guns slung over their shoulders. They looked tired and dusty and they stamped right past him with out even seeing him.

A tired old face in the group startled him and he recognized his grandfather but so much younger than when Frank had known him. Frank tried to move forward to reach out to this youthful grandfather of his. He found instead that his feet seemed to be rooted to the flagstones. A shrill shout broke the silence and Frank turned his head to see a small boy in a beautiful gypsy costume run past him. He looked just like Joe. Frank called out to him and the boy stopped and turned to face him.

"Why are you dressed as a gypsy, Joe?" said Frank curiously as he still tried to move his feet. Joe stared at him and then all around looking puzzled and a little scared. He spoke in a frightened little voice.

"Who’s there? Is there a ghost here to haunt me? Who’s there?" he whimpered looking around fearfully. Joe had time traveled without his identity and Frank seemed to exist as only a suggestion of his own identity.

Frank felt creeped out and stared at his little brother.

"Don’t fool around, Joe! I’m right here! Can’t you see me?"

Joe spun all around with fear in his eyes. He started to tremble and he paled drastically. "Who’s there? Who’s speaking to me? You’re scaring me!" he whimpered and ducked his head looking terrified.

Frank felt scared too and whispered back.

"I’m your brother, you can’t see me. But I’m not a ghost so don’t be scared. I won’t hurt you, I promise. You need to stop the man with the blond hair and mustache. He’s going to steal a special box. Can you do this for me?" he spoke quietly and calmly praying he didn’t scare Joe in speaking so openly.

Joe regained some of his color and listened intently. He took a deep breath and turned to look for the man Frank had described. He didn’t know why but the man looked familiar to him. He nodded to whatever direction the voice had come from and took off after the blond man.
