I’ll be watching you….*
Joe yawned and snuggled further under the covers. He knew that his alarm clock would be turning on soon. But for now he was going to enjoy this moment. Several minutes later the familiar strains to The Police’s ‘Roxanne’ blasted out of the radio alarm clock. Joe reluctantly turned the alarm off and got out of bed. He glared at the clock, wondering why he had to get up so early. As he gathered some clean clothes to wear, Joe also wondered why Frank wasn’t up yet. Then it hit him: today was the start of his summer vacation! Finals were done…no more studying…no more homework…no getting up early! Joe jumped back into bed and settled in for a nice long morning nap! Frank heard Joe’s alarm go off and chuckled to himself. He could hear his brother moving about his room and wondered how long it would take for him to remember they had no classes to go to. Five minutes later he heard Joe’s bedsprings squeak. Thinking that his brother had the right idea, Frank rolled onto his side, closed his eyes and went back to sleep.
An hour later Frank was wide awake and in the shower. Dressed in a light blue T-shirt and jeans, he saw Fenton coming in the front door with the morning paper in his hands. “Morning, Dad!” “You’re up early,” smiled Fenton. “Joe’s alarm woke me but I did manage to get a little more sleep.” Fenton smiled as he entered the kitchen and began to unfold the paper. His smile grew when he saw his wife, Laura. “Good morning, dear!” Laura held out a mug of coffee to Fenton. “Thank you!” Fenton kissed her cheek before taking the mug. “Morning, Mom – where’s Aunt Gertrude?” Frank was surprised not to see his aunt in the kitchen. “She’s in the laundry room washing some towels. Frank popped a piece of toast in his mouth, if he knew his aunt towels weren’t the only things she was washing.
When Joe finally got out of bed he had missed breakfast. He decided to head out to see Tony at the Pizzeria. Before he left he called Vanessa, hoping to meet up with her. Unfortunately Vanessa was on her way out. She and her mother were going to New York to visit a sick relative. Frank had left to see Callie, otherwise Joe would have asked him to come along. Joe rode his motorbike, enjoying the sunny day. He arrived just before the lunch rush and found an empty booth. Tony brought over a glass of Coke and sat down with Joe. A moment later Chet walked in and joined his two friends.
She tended to blend in the background; not very many people took notice of her. She stood off in the corner staring at the three young men. Brushing back her mousy brown hair, she straightened her apron. Taking a deep breath she walked over to the booth, making sure she had her pencil and pad at the ready. “H..hello Mr. Prito – are your friends ready to order?” she asked in a shy, low voice. “Amber, please don’t call me ‘Mr. Prito’! It makes me feel like my dad! Tony will be fine…really, I mean it!” Tony smiled at the shy girl. “Two large pizzas with the works will be fine.” Joe, never one to miss an opportunity to flirt, gave Amber a wink and a smile, causing the young girl to blush as she hurriedly wrote down the order and left. Tony and Chet shook their heads, chuckling softly, both used to their friend’s antics. “Good thing Vanessa isn’t here to see you shamelessly flirting with that girl!” Chet reached out and took a sip from Joe’s drink. “Leave the poor kid alone, Joe! I have a hard enough time getting her to speak above a whisper!” Tony lamented. “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself! She may be a little mousy but she’s still cute just the same, even with those glasses!” “Leave it to Joe to find beauty in every female!” Chet smiled at his good friend.
The lunch rush soon started. Tony left Joe and Chet to work his shift. Chet had to leave; he had promised to help his realtor father clean out a house that was up for sale. Joe stayed to finish the last few slices of pizza. He noticed how busy the restaurant was getting and that it looked like Tony was short of help. Having spent a few holidays and summers working for Mr. Prito, Joe got up to see if Tony wanted any help. “Thanks, man! One of my waiters called in sick. Would you mind waiting on tables?” Tony gave Joe an appreciative look. “No problem; hand me a pad and pencil.”
The lunch rush was just ending when Frank walked in. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw Joe at a table taking an order. Frank found a cleared booth and took a seat, waiting to catch Joe’s eye. Tony had seen Frank walk in. He went over to his friend and sat with him. “Hi Frank – I guess you’re looking for Joe?”“Yeah, Mom got worried when he didn’t come back and…well, you know.” Frank smiled and shrugged. Tony knew all too well. Joe Hardy seemed to have a knack for getting into and finding trouble! At that moment they heard a commotion – and true to form, Joe was in the midst of it! Four college age guys had come in and sat themselves down. Amber reluctantly walked over to take their order, but they began to harass her. One of the guys grabbed Amber around the waist and plunked her down on his lap. “Why don’t you take a break?” he laughed raucously. “Let go of me!” Amber cried out. “Hey four-eyes, you should be glad Tad the Cad wants you!” sneered one of Tad’s friends. “I believe the young lady asked you to let her go.” Joe had quickly walked over and glared at the four young men. “Sure, whatever you say,” said Tad and then pushed Amber off his lap, laughing when she fell to the floor. If there was one thing that made Joe ‘see red’ it was a bully. He clenched his fists as he glared at the table’s occupants. “You and…your friends better leave and leave now!”“Oh yeah – and who’s going to make me?” Tad said as he slowly stood up. His three friends shifted uneasily in their chairs. “How about Bayport’s finest?”Tad whirled around, coming face to face with Con Riley, a Bayport police officer who had just happened to drop in for a bite to eat. Con had just gotten off his shift and was still dressed in his uniform. One hand rested lightly upon his gun as he stared at Tad. One by one the three ‘friends’ stood up and walked out of the Pizzeria, leaving Tad by himself. Con, one eyebrow raised, tried not to smirk. “At least your friends are smart. Now are you going to walk out of here peacefully or…?” While Con was speaking to Tad, Joe had helped Amber up off the floor. He stood close by her side as the three young men left. Tad glanced at Con and Joe, then back to Con again. He clenched his jaw and quietly left. Frank had been watching and when he saw Joe walk to the table he tensed. He got up from the booth and was about to go help his brother when he saw Con walk in. Frank let out a sigh of relief when he saw Tad leave. He then approached Con, Joe and Amber.
