O can’t you see You belong to me My poor heart aches With every step you take
Ambrosia Genève Sutherland had turned twenty years old two weeks before she started working at The Pizzeria. Amber’s family were one of the founding fathers of Bayport; however she had attended Southport High. She was a shy, quiet, studious girl, always sitting by herself…too shy to join any of the school groups…too shy to make any friends. Sitting alone at home – dreaming of having friends…dreaming of her Prince Charming. Amber didn’t have to work for a living but her mother wanted her to go out in the world. She had grown tired of her daughter sitting up in her room doing nothing but dream and romanticize. ***** Chet was ready for a large pepperoni pizza as he drove into the parking lot that belonged to The Pizzeria. He had seen Tony’s car and knew that his friend would be working. All during high school Tony worked at his family-owned restaurant during the weekends and school holidays. Now that Tony had graduated his working hours had increased. Chet knew that Tony was also attending Bayport University part-time. The stout young man was hoping that Tony would be able to get the night off for his beach party. Walking into the restaurant, Chet was startled to see an ash-blonde waiting on tables. At first he thought that Vanessa had gotten a job but realized his mistake when he got a second, longer look at the young girl. He realized that the girl was a few inches shorter than Vanessa and not quite as slim. Chet sat in his favorite booth and watched the girl he mistook for Vanessa walk over. He noticed that she even had grayish-blue eyes like Vanessa’s...but she was no Vanessa Bender. Chet had always thought that Vanessa had aristocratic features to go with her peaches and cream complexion. He could picture Vanessa as a princess. The girl before him was pretty but she had a rather pinched face and her skin was a little blotchy. Reading her name tag, Chet almost choked when he saw that this girl was Amber – the shy waitress that Joe had playfully flirted with. “Hi!” Amber smiled happily when she recognized Chet. “Hi…um, Amber.” Chet gave her a weak smile. “Is Joe going to join you?” Chet could hear a hopeful tone in her voice. “I haven’t talked with him today so I really don’t know.” Chet looked down at his watch. “Um…can I get a large pepperoni with extra cheese to go?” “Sure thing!” Amber quickly wrote down his order and took it up to the counter. A few more people came in; Chet breathed more easily when Amber walked over to get their order. Thirty minutes later, Tony waved him over. “I’m going to walk you out,” whispered Tony as Chet paid for his pizza. Chet gave Tony a slight nod and gave Amber a wave goodbye. He took the pizza box and waited for Tony to walk around the counter. Chet had already dismissed his discomfort about Amber and wasn’t too concerned when Tony said he would walk him outside, merely worried that Tony wasn’t going to be able to attend the party. So he was surprised by Tony’s question. “What do you think about Amber?”“Um…she seems nice.” Chet hedged a bit. “That’s not what I meant…” Tony ran his hand through his hair, which made Chet think of Frank. “Did she ask you about Joe?” “Yeah, she wanted to know if he was going to join me for lunch. Why do you ask?” “I’ve been getting this weird vibe from her….First she dyes her hair – and I really didn’t think too much of it at first until I realized that it was the same color as Vanessa’s, and now…” Chet suddenly remembered something…something that had been different about Amber. “She’s wearing contacts…last time she wore glasses and now…”“Yeah….she got contacts and now her eyes are almost the same color as Vanessa’s.” A worried frown crossed Tony’s brow. ***** Saturday morning was bright and sunny. Chet and Biff’s beach party was scheduled for that evening. Joe and Frank were cleaning out the van; they had taken their motorbikes out towards the Morton farm, riding on the many dirt roads – and now they needed to sweep out the mud and dirt that had clung to the tires. When that chore was done the brothers went back inside the house to get ready for the party. Chet was going to barbeque some burgers and chicken legs before heading out to the beach. He was also going to bring some side dishes that his mother had made. Biff was supplying the chips and soft drinks. Vanessa and Callie had promised to bring some paper plates and plastic utensils plus plenty of napkins. Joe and Frank were bringing extra bags of ice.
Vanessa had planned to spend the night with Callie but it didn’t work out that way. Andrea Bender, Vanessa’s mother, was a freelance graphic designer. She was working on a design for a new online shopping company. Andrea was almost done with the work when her computer crashed. Vanessa had to work all night helping her mother to try and save her files. Luckily Andrea had transferred the majority of her work onto a CD-Rom. Vanessa also helped her mother redo the design. As she got ready for the party, Vanessa was glad that she and Callie had already gotten their part of the supplies. The plates, utensils and napkins were at Callie’s house. Vanessa slung her tote bag over her shoulder and headed out the door. She started to get in her jeep when an unfamiliar car pulled up behind her vehicle. Vanessa admired the sleek 2007 Mustang. She couldn’t help but smile as she thought what Joe’s reaction would be to this car. Closing her car door, Vanessa took a few steps forward as the driver of the Mustang approached her. The young girl walking towards her had a friendly smile on her face. Her calm shy manner did not cause Vanessa to feel any alarm. “Hi, I’m looking for Vanessa Bender.” “You found her!” Vanessa looked curiously at the stranger. Amber smiled at Vanessa as she reached inside the pocket of her shorts. With practiced ease, she flipped off the cap of the syringe and with lightning speed stabbed it into Vanessa’s forearm. Vanessa had a polite smile on her face, wondering who this girl was. Before she had time to react, the girl lifted her arm, and Vanessa felt a hard pinch….Suddenly her world started to spin. As in slow motion, she could feel herself fall to the ground, just before her world turned to darkness…. “I’m glad we could finally meet.” ***** Joe dived into the sand. Hitting the volleyball he rolled and watched as it rose up. Tony jumped up and spiked the ball over the net. “Yeah!” yelled out a triumphant Joe. Tony laughed as he helped his friend up. Joe wiped the sand off his clothes as best he could. He grinned at Tony but his attention was elsewhere. “She’ll be here, don’t worry.” Tony lightly tapped Joe’s shoulder. “I know, but…she told Callie that she was getting ready to leave and Callie’s been here for over an hour!” “You did bring your cell phone, right?” asked Tony, who knew that Joe was notorious for forgetting his phone. “Yes, I got it in…”Joe unzipped the side pocket of his cargo shorts and waved the phone in front of Tony. “Is it charged?” Joe checked his phone before he gave an affirmative answer. “Hey! Are we playing or we talking?” Biff called out playfully. “How ‘bout eating?” panted Chet, who was on Biff’s team. “Let’s take a break, Biff – poor Chet is wasting away!” teased Joe and ducked when Chet threw the volleyball at him. Joe followed slowly behind Tony, Biff and Chet, dialing Vanessa’s cell again. He shut his phone with a sharp snap when his call went straight to her voice mail box. Where was she – what was taking her so long? ***** Her head hurt. That was Vanessa’s first thought as she regained consciousness. She rolled onto her side and felt…straw. She squinted and slowly sat up. She looked around and found that she was in a stall. How did she get in Chet’s barn, she wondered. Hearing footsteps, she tried to stand up but found that she was chained to the floor. “Oh good, you’re awake!”Vanessa looked up; she stared in shock when she saw the girl who had come to her house. Why was this girl wearing her clothes?! Vanessa had to look down just to check that she was wearing clothing. “Do you like it? I hope you don’t mind but I had to check who the designers were. I’m really glad you decided to wear the bikini – Joe is really going to like seeing me in it.” “You won’t get away with this! Joe will do everything in his power to find me!” Vanessa scowled at her captor. “Why would he come looking for you? He hardly knows who you are!”“Wh-what?” whispered Vanessa, fear coursing through her body. Amber just smiled as she placed a large bottled water near Vanessa. As she turned to leave Vanessa called out. “Wait! Who…who are you?!”“I’m Vanessa…Vanessa Bender.”
