I’ll be watching you
Vanessa sat trembling in fear after Amber left. She had to get out of there…she had to find Joe and warn him! “Calm down, Bender…now is not the time to panic,” she mumbled to herself. Vanessa took several deep calming breaths. When she was feeling a little calmer, Vanessa remembered something Joe had taught her. She removed a bobby pin from her hair. She pulled it slightly apart and began working to pick the lock of the shackle. ***** Joe couldn’t wait anymore – he didn’t know why he’d even waited this long! He had to go find Vanessa. He went to search for Frank to let him know that he was leaving, and found his brother sitting with Callie, talking with Phil. “Frank, I gotta go. I need to look for Vanessa.” “I’m getting worried about her too,” said Callie. “Do you want some help?” Frank looked at Joe with concern. “No, you and Callie are having fun.” Joe gave Frank a smile. “She might be having car trouble and forgot…forgot to charge her phone.” “Come on, Joe…let me help you.” “I’ll be fine, Frank, but I appreciate the offer. Thanks.” Joe placed his hand on Frank’s shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. “I bet you Vanessa is still trying to decide which bathing suit to wear!” Callie said, hoping to ease Joe’s worry. “She found another one and couldn’t decide which one to wear.” Joe chuckled softly and gave Callie a smile. He then sketched a wave to his friends as he turned to leave. He was nearing the van when he caught a glimpse of ash-blonde hair. Joe let out a sigh of relief and was about to call out to Vanessa when he got a longer look at the girl approaching him. He wouldn’t make the same mistake again – Joe felt an overwhelming sadness when he saw Amber. “Hi Joe!” Amber waved and ran to Joe. “Hi Ambrosia – everyone is over there by that dune.” “Are you leaving?” Amber noticed Joe had his car keys out. “Yeah…Vanessa, she’s my girlfriend – she hasn’t arrived yet and I’m a little worried about her.” “Is she the ‘someone’ you mistook me for at the mall?” A small smile crossed Joe’s face. “Yeah.” “Does she drive a jeep?” “Yes she does!” Joe walked around the van searching for Vanessa’s vehicle. “Was it a Chief Cherokee – a red one?” “I think so – it just drove in when I was walking down here. Follow me and I’ll show you.” Following Amber, Joe started to get a weird feeling in the pit of his stomach. For some reason he thought he had seen Vanessa wearing the same tank top and shorts. ‘Snap out of it, Hardy. Lots of girls buy the same outfit!’ But Joe couldn’t forget what Frank had told him. ‘Tony seems to think that…well, that she’s obsessed with you.” The thought left him when he saw the back of Vanessa’s jeep. He hurried over but there was no sign of Vanessa. Joe frowned…if she just drove in why didn’t he and Amber see her? With his back to Amber, Joe never saw her swing the tire iron until it was too late. ***** Vanessa gave a whoop of victory when she heard the soft click and knew she had opened the lock. Quickly removing the shackle from her wrist, she scrambled to her feet. She ran out of the barn and stood a few feet outside the door. She didn’t recognize the area as she searched for her Jeep. She found the Mustang but her vehicle was nowhere to be found. “That little witch!! She stole my car!! Well, two can play that game!” Vanessa growled as she ran to the car and peered inside. She cackled gleefully when she saw that the keys were still in the ignition. “Please let the door be unlocked!” whispered Vanessa. It was. ***** Making sure that no one was around, Amber dragged Joe to the other side of the jeep. Opening the passenger door she managed to get him onto the seat. She made sure that he was buckled in before closing the door. That done, Amber got in behind the wheel. Starting the jeep, she turned to smile at Joe. “Time to go home!”
Callie could see that Frank was worried about Joe going alone to search for Vanessa. She very calmly stood up, and holding Frank’s hand she gently pulled and led him towards the parking lot. He didn’t have to ask; Frank knew what Callie was doing and he was thankful he had someone like her. Joe and Callie didn’t always get along but they were there for each other when it counted. Frank grew concerned when he saw that their van was still there. Then Callie caught sight of a familiar vehicle. “Look,” she pointed out the departing jeep to Frank. “Vanessa must have just got here.” “Yeah and it looks like they’re going to have their own private party!”Frank put his arm around Callie’s shoulders, and they went back to their friends. ***** Joe groaned in pain as he slowly became aware of his surroundings. He noticed he was in a dark, dank room – his arms and neck felt sore and a marching band was playing inside his head. He raised his head only to find that he was chained to the wall. Looking down Joe saw that his feet were chained as well. He was trying to figure out why his head hurt so much when he saw Amber coming towards him. Joe had a sudden vision of seeing Amber’s reflection in the window of Vanessa’s jeep. Her arms were raised and she held a tire iron. “You hit me!”“I’m sorry – I didn’t want to but…you’re still under her spell.” Joe stared at Amber warily, not understanding what she was talking about. “I can’t stay long. I wanted to make sure you were comfortable. I have to go up now before Mother wonders why I’m taking so long. I’ll try to sneak away later tonight and bring you some food. Goodbye, my love!” Her hands resting lightly on his chest, Amber stood up on her toes to give Joe a kiss on the lips. With a small wave she scampered off, leaving him in the dark smelly cellar. “Comfortable – she has got to be kidding?! What is it about me and loony women?!” Joe’s thoughts turned to Vanessa. He wondered if Amber had done something to her….He hoped that she had been brought here as well. “Vanessa?” Joe waited, hoping to hear her voice. “Vanessa, if you’re here, answer me! Please answer me!” Only silence was heard. ***** Vanessa wasn’t familiar with the area she was in and had taken several wrong turns. The car was running low on gas when she found a 24-hour convenience store. Not finding a payphone Vanessa went inside to ask the clerk. She was relieved to learn that the phone was located in the back of the store. She had enough change in her pockets for one phone call.
Callie was watching Frank throw a Frisbee to Tony when his cell phone rang. Not recognizing the number on the Caller ID, Callie signaled to Frank who came running over. “Hello, Frank Hardy here.” “Thank goodness – I wasn’t sure if I dialed the right number!”“Vanessa – is that you? Did you run out of gas – are you and Joe stranded somewhere?” “What? Joe’s not with you?! Oh no! She’s already got him!”Frank pressed the phone closer to his ear. “What are…who got him? Vanessa – what is going on?” Vanessa hurriedly explained what happened to her and how she had escaped. “She thinks she’s me! She called herself ‘Vanessa Bender’!!”“Where are you now?”“I’m…I’m not sure! I’ve been driving around trying to find a familiar landmark when I came across this store!” Talking in a soft, soothing voice, Frank calmed Vanessa and had her go back to the store clerk to get directions. Once he knew where she was, Frank assured her he was on the way. He hung up his phone and was surprised to see Tony, Biff, Chet and Phil standing close by. Phil had noticed the concerned look on Callie’s face and then saw how agitated Frank was getting. He motioned to his friends and they went over to see what was wrong. “What is it, Frank? Did Joe and Vanessa get in a car accident?”“No…worse – Amber kidnapped Joe.” Frank then told them how Amber had gone to the Benders’ home and taken Vanessa – how Vanessa had escaped and found that Amber had taken her Jeep. Callie gasped when she heard this. “Oh no! That means….” “That we let Amber get away with Joe.” Dear Diary, He’s here! My beloved is finally with me! He is still under that witch’s spell. I have already transformed myself but he still did not recognize me. But he will…he will.
