The chauffeur was putting the luggage in the trunk of the limo when Chief Collig drove up. The chauffeur paused for a moment then continued when another police vehicle drove in. “Are the Sutherlands still inside?” Collig asked the chauffeur. “Yes sir, I believe they’re still having breakfast.” Thanking the man, Collig informed the Forensic team to stay put. He then signaled to Fenton and Frank. The three men walked up to the front door. The maid was not happy to see them again and tried to block the entrance. Collig brushed past while asking where the dinning room was. Too startled to protest, the maid scampered ahead of Collig, leading the way. “Mrs. Sutherland…I’m sorry…I tried to stop them!” stammered the maid nervously. “What’s the meaning of this?!” Edwina slammed her hand down on the table. Collig very calmly walked over to her and handed her a piece of paper. “This is a warrant to search a vehicle that is on your property.” Edwina silently read the document then set it on the table. “That vehicle is not my concern. Do whatever you want with it. Tow it out of here if you like. I warn you…if I find any damage done to my property I will sue you and the Bayport police department!” “Where’s Amber?” asked Frank when he noticed that she was not there. “She hates goodbyes. More than likely she went to her castle,” Alfred replied. “You might see her; I believe the Jeep is parked not too far from it.” Frank avoided looking at Fenton. He didn’t want his father to know that he was planning on making his way over to the cottage – or castle, as Amber referred to it. Fenton already knew what Frank had in mind. Whenever his oldest son avoided his gaze…Fenton knew that Frank was contemplating something he shouldn’t do. He just had to keep Collig occupied to let Frank search for Joe. ***** Joe got off the bed and stretched the stiffness out of his muscles when Amber walked in. His mouth dropped open; he couldn’t believe what she was wearing. Her hair was plaited in one long braid. She wore what appeared to be a ball gown – light blue in color. It had an empire waist and long flowing sleeves. “Good morning my Prince!” Amber gave Joe a low curtsy. “Breakfast will be a little late. But if you care to wash up…the bathroom is through that door! Don’t worry…you’ll be able to reach it. I brought you a new toothbrush and a razor.” Suddenly Amber captured him in a hug. She held him tightly for a minute then turned and ran out of the room. Joe gave himself a mental shake then went to check out the bathroom. He found a few ribbons, a comb and a small mirror. He opened the medicine cabinet and grinned. Inside was a small packet of bobby pins. It didn’t take Joe long to free himself from the leg iron. He checked the closet hoping to find his clothes, but it only held more gowns. He went over to the door and opened it cautiously. He didn’t see Amber in the hallway. He found the living room empty, no sign of Amber. “Time to get out of here!”***** The Forensic team was thoroughly searching the Jeep. Chief Collig and Fenton stood watching the men and women while Frank casually made his way towards the small cottage. He had seen the top of the roof. “How long am I not supposed to know that Frank went off searching for Joe?” asked Collig quietly. Fenton blinked in surprise then he started to chuckle. “Can’t get anything past you, can I?” “Many have tried and many have failed.” The two men shared a laugh; Fenton glanced over his shoulder and watched as Frank disappeared over the hill.
Amber was feeling giddy. Her parents were gone – she and Joe would have the house all to themselves! He seemed so happy to see her! She wouldn’t have to keep him locked up anymore! Amber closed her eyes and twirled, laughing happily. “Amber?” Frank couldn’t believe what he was seeing. She looked like she was going to a Renaissance Fair. Her eyes flew open; she was shocked to see Frank standing a few feet away from her. “No…No….No….Noooo!!” Amber slowly backed away from Frank and then turned and ran towards her castle. “Amber, wait!”***** Joe walked out of the house. He was walking along the grass trying to get his bearings when he heard Amber scream. He quickened his steps, listening intently, attempting to pinpoint her location. Then he saw her – she was running, fear etched on her face. Amber saw Joe – her Prince. He had come to rescue her! Suddenly she tripped on the hem of her dress and fell face first onto the ground. Frank reached her first and knelt down, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. “DON’T TOUCH ME! DON’T TOUCH ME!”Amber pulled away from Frank; she tried to get up but kept getting tangled with the hem of her dress. Frank smiled when he saw Joe, his mind full of questions about his brother’s clothes. Kneeling down, the younger Hardy spoke to Amber in a soft voice. “Amber, it’s okay. Frank’s not going to hurt you.” “Yes he is! He wants to take you away from me! You’re mine – we belong together!” Amber sobbed hysterically. Joe didn’t know what to say. He looked at Frank, hoping his brother would know what to do. But Frank seemed at a loss for words. Anything they said would only make Amber miserable. In the end they said nothing. Frank watched as Joe helped Amber to her feet and then scooped her in his arms and calmly…sadly...walked with her back to the main house as she clung to him. Her head rested on his shoulder and she sobbed softly. ***** Frank watched his brother pace the floor. They were in the foyer waiting to hear how Amber was doing. Mr. Sutherland had gone to check on the progress the police were making when he caught sight of Joe carrying Amber. He rushed over, not knowing what to do. Amber wouldn’t stop crying – she continued to profess her love for Joe and his love for her. No one could get her to calm down. Mr. Sutherland had Joe take Amber into the house. Chief Collig and Fenton had followed after Mr. Sutherland when they had seen him run in the other direction. When they entered the house Edwina was waiting impatiently for her husband. She grew concerned when she saw the shape Amber was in. “Alfred, call Dr. Stevens – tell him Amber is having one of her episodes! A bad one!” “She’s done this before?” Fenton glared at the Sutherlands. “She’s never kidnapped anyone before!” Alfred replied, a regretful tone in his voice.
The doctor arrived in less than fifteen minutes and ran up the stairs. Chief Collig had gone outside, the Forensic team was done. Fenton was on the phone informing Laura that Joe was safe and sound. Finished with his call, Fenton joined his sons. Joe was staring at the top of the stairs. “She’ll be all right, son.” Fenton squeezed Joe’s shoulder. “I’m not pressing charges,” he said softly. “Joe, you can’t be serious!” Frank went to stand in front of his brother. “I’m not pressing charges and nothing you say is going to change my mind!” “What about what she did to Vanessa?” Frank hoped he hit Joe’s weak spot. “Once I talk with Vanessa, she’ll understand.” Joe stared intently at Frank. “Amber’s been through enough already. I don’t….I don’t want to cause her any more pain.” Dr. Stevens came down the stairs followed by Edwina. She seemed to have lost her haughty attitude. “How is she?” asked an anxious Joe. “She’s sleeping – Dr. Stevens had to give her a sedative. Mr. Hardy – I want to apologize for my behavior earlier. I didn’t want to…” Edwina let out a small sob and turned away for a moment to regain her composure. “I just want to apologize for what my daughter has done.” “What’s going to happen to Amber, Doctor?” asked Fenton. “There’s a sanitarium in Switzerland that she’ll be going to – I think a change of scenery is in order. She’ll get the help she needs there.” “Mrs. Sutherland – Joe has no intention of pressing charges. I don’t know what Miss Bender will do…” “Thank you.” Edwina went back upstairs. Dr. Stevens excused himself and went to make the arrangements for Amber’s stay at the sanatorium. “Can we go home now?” Joe looked pleadingly at Fenton. “Sure thing Prince Charming, sure thing.” Joe rolled his eyes and then smiled. He couldn’t wait to get back home. Dear Diary, This will be the last time I can speak with you. They are sending me away. I am to be banished and will never see my beloved again. But one day….one day we will be together.
