CHAPTER 2

The man shuffled slowly towards the van. Two guards stood beside him,  guns at the ready as they escorted him to the police vehicle. The heavily shackled prisoner towered over the two guards. The man stood 6’4” tall; his dark hair was pulled back and held with a rubber band. He had a scar that ran down his right cheek; his prison garb bulged around his muscled chest and arms. He had spent a lot of time in the yards lifting weights.

Daniel Reese, better known to the warden as prisoner number 247313, was being moved to a maximum security facility. Daniel sat quietly as the guard locked him into his seat.

“Take one last look, Reese and say good bye – you won’t be getting any more special privileges where you’re going!”

The prison guards laughed uproariously. Daniel ignored them and continued to stare straight ahead. They left the Southport Minimum Security Prison and headed upstate. An hour after they left it began to pour down rain.

The driver of the police van was busy concentrating on the road ahead; he didn’t pa attention to the car that came up behind them. Suddenly the car veered to its left and started to pass the van. As it came up along side the police van the driver of the car slammed into the side of the police vehicle. Caught by surprise, the driver let go of the steering wheel for a second. He quickly grabbed hold of it, but he had trouble controlling the van as it began to skid off the road.

Joe walked into his American History class, and took a seat towards the back of the room. A few more students came into the room; a couple of them were drinking coffee. Joe wished he had thought to buy a cup himself. He smiled at a few people he knew from high school. Soon the room was filled with students, some were talking, a few others were getting a few extra minutes of sleep.

A couple of students were getting restless; the professor had not shown up yet. A few had begun to gather their book bags when a tall man entered the room. Michael Preston was of African-American heritage, 6’4” in height; his dark brown hair cut close to his scalp. He had an athlete’s lean body build. Michael Preston had been a star athlete, going through college on a basketball scholarship.

“My apologies for being late; please be seated. My name is Mr. Preston and I hope you’re ready to learn.”

Frank waited for Joe; they had planned to meet for lunch after Frank’s last class. Joe had an hour break at one o’clock, and then his Forensic/Lab class from two to four o’clock.

It was a beautiful fall day, and the sun shone brightly as Frank enjoyed the warmth. Suddenly someone came up behind him and covered his eyes. Frank smiled as a familiar scent wafted into his nostrils.

“Guess who!”

“Julia Roberts?! No wait…Heather Locklear – Reese Witherspoon – Nancy Drew?!”

Callie Shaw, Frank’s long-time girlfriend, removed her hands from his face and smacked him on the back of his head.

“OW!” Frank rubbed the back of his head. “Why’d you do that for?”

“Because you deserved it!” Although she was glaring at him, there was a hint of a smile on Callie’s face.

Frank did his best to look contrite. “At least I had you in good company!”

At that moment Joe came jogging over. “Hey Callie! You joining us for lunch?”

“What a great idea!” Frank placed his arm around his brother’s shoulders. Joe gave Frank a dubious look.

“What’d I miss?” he asked Callie.

“Not a thing,” replied Frank as he tried to pull Joe towards the university cafeteria.

Joe stopped walking and stared hard at his brother and then over at Callie. He noticed the smug smile on the pretty girl’s face also Frank’s mussed up hair and the embarrassed expression on his face.

“She hit you in the back of the head, didn’t she?”

When he saw his older brother blush, Joe let out a guffaw.

Sergeant Con Riley was at his desk finishing up some reports when his phone rang.

“Riley here…when did this happen? – Why weren’t we notified about the transfer? – Has anyone fortified the Hardys? – No, I’ll call them myself!”

Con slammed the phone down. He picked up the receiver again, and his hand paused over the key pad. He placed the phone back on its stand and hurried to Chief Collig’s office.

Ezra Collig was having his third cup of coffee when Con Riley appeared at his door. The cup was half way to his mouth, but one look at his sergeant and Collig knew the news wasn’t going to be good. With a heavy sigh he placed the coffee cup on his desk.

“What’s the bad news?”

“At nine a.m. this morning Daniel Reese was being relocated to a maximum prison facility – at eleven-o-five a.m. the police van was run off the road – the officers were killed and Daniel Reese is on the run.”

“Daniel Reese – he’s the murderer/rapist that Joe and Frank put in jail?!”

“Yes sir, and the Hardys haven’t been told yet, that Reese has escaped.”

Pushing his chair back, Chief Collig got up and got his jacket. “Let’s go – I spoke with Fenton this morning, so I know he’s working at home.”

*****

Rayne Preston walked through the Bayport campus, intending to meet her father. She noticed a dark-haired young man standing next to a pretty young girl, and paused slightly when a blonde guy joined them. She didn’t know why, but she felt as if she knew him.
