A very curious Frank
Hardy entered the principal’s office, following the school secretary.
Principal Hayden was standing by the window, her back to the door. “Principal Hayden, Frank Hardy is here.” The secretary gave Frank a smile before closing the door. “Thank you for coming so quickly, Frank, and I apologize for taking you away from your lunch. Your mother called – don’t worry she’s fine. Phil Cohen was in a car accident early this morning.” “Is he all right?!” “He’s shaken up – he has a bad bruise from his seat belt – Lydia Barlow, however, was not so lucky. Unfortunately I’m having a difficult time trying to find her foster mother.” Principal Hayden’s face was etched with concern. “She may still be at the courthouse. Phil told me that Ms. Chase had gotten a summons for jury duty.” “That’s a relief – I’ll give Lieutenant Riley a call then, he’s with Lydia at the hospital. Before I lose track again – Mrs. Cohen would like you to bring Phil’s school assignments that he missed today. I’ve already contacted his and Lydia’s teachers. Come by the office after your last class and pick them up.” “I’d be happy to do that. Is Phil at Bayport General?” Frank asked with concern. “Yes he is, and thank you, Frank.” Frank left the principal’s office. Checking his watch he saw that he still had ten minutes left of his lunch break. When he arrived back at the cafeteria he found several anxious and curious faces staring at him. Frank quickly told his brother and friends that Phil and Lydia had been in a car accident. “I don’t know all the details!” Frank said when the group began throwing questions at him. The rest of the day seemed to drag on for the Hardy brothers and their friends. All were anxious to see Phil and Lydia. ** *** ** Con Riley was reading the paper while Lydia lay sleeping. Still in the ER room, they were waiting to hear from Lydia’s foster mother so that she could be put in a room. Con had closed the curtains around the bed to give them some privacy. He looked up when part of the curtain was drawn. “Lieutenant Riley,” whispered the nurse. “You have a phone call.” Folding the paper closed, Con followed the nurse back to the nurses’ station. He was surprised to hear from Principal Hayden, who informed him of the whereabouts of Ms. Chase. “Thank you for calling me, Principal Hayden. I know the head of security at the courthouse, I’ll give her a call – she’ll find Ms. Chase.” Hanging up the phone and thanking the nurse, Con was about to go back and sit with Lydia when someone called out to him. He turned around to find a tall, pretty red-head walking towards him. “Hi – you came in with the two car wreck victims?” “Hello, and yes I did. I’m Lieutenant Riley – Con Riley.” “I’m Dr. Caitlin Johnson – I’m the ER doctor. I wanted to ask you a question about the young woman who was brought in?” “If you’re wondering why her parents aren’t here…she’s a foster kid. Don’t worry we’ve located her foster mom – seems she got called in for jury duty.” Con smiled at the doctor – his smile faltered when he noticed the expression on her face. “She’s in foster care?” “Yes, is there a problem?” Con wasn’t sure he liked where this was going. “Not in our treating her if that’s what you’re worried about – it’s just…” Dr. Johnson paused then looked down at the file she held. “Lieutenant Riley, I’m curious – how old do you think…Miss Barlow is?” “She told me her birthday was in June of 1981 so that would make her about sixteen.” “Not according to her x-rays. Come with me and I’ll show you.” Dr. Johnson led Con over to a darkened room. He saw that there was an x-ray ready to be viewed. “As you know, Miss Barlow was not wearing her seat belt. Thankfully the car she was in had a passenger air bag. She hit the air bag so hard that she bruised her ribs and her jaw. At the time I was worried she had broken her jaw so I had an x-ray done. Now see here...” She pointed to the x-ray. “This shows that Miss Barlow had her wisdom teeth taken out. If she were sixteen, that could be about the right age when they’re pulled…but the way the gums have healed…I’d say your Miss Barlow is around twenty-three or twenty-four years old.” Con was stunned. ** *** ** His last class finally ended. Frank had told Joe to wait for him by the van while he went to get the school assignments for Phil and Lydia. Joe was already in the van; Frank dumped his book bag in the back as he climbed in. “Dad just called. He said we need to come to the police station first before we go see Phil,” Joe said as he started the van. “Did he say why?” “Yeah, sorta. He said something about Lydia not being who she said she was.” Joe glanced over at Frank with a puzzled expression on his face. “That doesn’t sound good.” “No, it doesn’t.” Joe was frowning as he drove to the police station.
Frank and Joe walked up to the desk sergeant to announce their arrival. “The Chief’s waiting for you in his office. Better hurry, he’s not too happy.” The brothers walked down the hallway, and Frank knocked on the closed door. “Come in!” barked Chief Collig. Frank and Joe glanced at each other. The desk sergeant was right –Collig was not happy. “You go first,” said Joe. “Me – why me?!” “Because you’re the oldest!” grinned Joe. Frank rolled his eyes before opening the door and walking in. They found Fenton sitting in a chair; Officer Dave Paulson was also in the office. Joe noticed that Collig was holding a piece of paper. “Joe, Frank, I need you to verify something for me.” Chief Collig held out the paper to Joe. Joe and Frank stared down at the photo then back at Chief Collig. “That’s Lydia,” said Joe in a soft voice. “Also known as Clair Miller!” growled Collig. “She may have a few other aliases,.” Officer Paulson told the boys. “Con took her picture and it’s being sent to different Child Services in several states. Sam’s going to call us if we get any hits.” Fenton looked at his sons. “One of you needs to tell Phil. I think he’ll take this news better if you told him.” “What news – what’s going on, Dad?” Frank stood confused and angry at Fenton and Chief Collig. Fenton stood up and placed his hand on Frank’s shoulder. “Lydia isn’t who she claims to be. She’s been pretending to be a sixteen-year-old runaway. In reality she’s a twenty-four year old grown woman.” Frank and Joe stood in stunned silence.
