It took Joe a few minutes to find the library book; his locker was almost as messy as his room. He ran back to the library, where he found Mrs. Baxter sorting some books. Joe winced when he paid his fine, then went searching for Frank and Phil. He neared a corner table and saw the back of Frank’s head, and Phil sitting across from his brother – then he saw a pretty, dark-haired girl who seemed to be flirting with his shy friend…and Phil was flirting back!

Quickly getting over his surprise, Joe approached the trio.  “Hey, you guys ready to go?” he asked with a smile.

“Did you return your book?” Frank turned around to face his brother.

“Yeah, about that…um – I was a little short and told Mrs. Baxter you would cover the rest for me,” answered Joe with a sheepish expression.

Frank let out a sigh: “The things a big brother has to do!”  He left to pay the fine

“Aww, I know you really love me,” grinned Joe as Phil and Lydia chuckled softly.

“Joe, this is Lydia. Do you think you could give her a ride home?” Phil gave Joe a hopeful look.

“Sure, there’s plenty of room in the van!” Joe smiled at Lydia. “Nice to meet you.”

“Uh, Joe – just how much was your library fine?” asked Phil when he saw the peeved expression on the older Hardy’s face.

Frank stomped over to Joe: “Just how long did you have that book?!”

“Uh,” chuckled Joe nervously, “A couple of months, maybe?”

“Ookay…we just got our allowance the other day – how could you be short?!”

As the four teens walked out of the school, Lydia glanced worriedly over at Phil.  “Maybe I should take the bus home,” she whispered to Phil, who was trying not to laugh out loud.

“No, it’s okay. Joe always blows his allowance and Frank is forever lecturing him about it! This is just a typical Hardy brothers moment.”

“I’m sorry Frank! I promise to pay you back! I’ll…I’ll do your laundry for a month! I’ll do your chores for two months! I’ll do your homework!”

Frank was going to make a smart remark but when he saw Joe’s sad, please-don’t-be-mad-at-me expression, he let out a sigh.

“I’ll do my own homework, thank you very much. I want to keep my grade average!” he said with a small smile as he reached out and rumpled Joe’s hair. He then put his arm around Joe’s shoulders and gave him a small hug.  “But next time, please turn in your library books on time!”

“I will, thanks Frank!” smiled Joe with relief.

“So what did you think about the book?” asked Frank curiously.

Joe gave Frank a sheepish grin.  “Um…I never did get a chance to read it!”

Phil and Lydia laughed when Frank chased after Joe.

Frank and Joe were beginning to like Lydia Barlow. She was sweet, funny and pretty, plus she seemed to like Phil! Since Joe was driving Frank turned around to talk to her.

“You’re new to Bayport High, aren’t you?”

“Yes, I just moved here.” Lydia tucked a strand of hair behind her ear; she seemed to be uncomfortable.

“So where can the Hardy Taxi Service drop you off?” asked Joe with a laugh.

“480 High Street,” replied Lydia softly.

Frank smiled. “You live with Ms. Chase? Are you a relative?”

“No, she’s my…she’s my foster parent.”

The van had come to a stop; Joe was waiting for the stop light to turn from red to green. He turned around and smiled at Lydia.  “Ms. Chase is really cool! Frank and I used to be ‘big brothers’ for one of her kids.”

“Oh yeah, Aaron!” chuckled Phil. “Have you heard from him since his adoption?”

“Joe and I got an email from him the other day! I forgot to forward a picture to you! He just got his orange belt!” Frank commented with pride.

“Aaron was small for his age and got picked on at school. Ms. Chase asked Frank and Joe if they would give him a few pointers on how to defend himself.” Phil explained to Lydia.

Joe noticed the light had changed and concentrated on driving again. He was concerned that Lydia needed a ride home and wondered if Ms. Chase was having car troubles again.

They reached Phil’s house firstPhil slowly unbuckled his seat belt and glanced shyly at Lydia. He wanted to ask for her phone number but wasn’t sure if Ms. Chase would allow boys to call the young girl.  “Well, thanks for the ride,” he sighed, reaching for the door handle. He smiled at Lydia and took a deep breath.  “If you need any help…you know, with your Shakespeare report…I could...um…”

“I programmed Ms. Chase’s phone number in your cell when you loaned it to me,” Lydia whispered softly.

A huge grin crossed Phil’s face as he slid the door open and almost fell out of the van.  “See you guys tomorrow – bye!”

“Um…Phil – the door!” laughed Frank as he watched his friend stumble away.

“Oh yeah…the door! Sorry about that!” Phil ran back and shut the door. He waved goodbye to his friends as the van pulled away from the curb.

Ten minutes later Joe pulled up to the curb near the home of Ms. Chase.

“I’ll be right back, Frank. I want to check out Ms. Chase’s car.”

“She was having trouble with it this morning,” said Lydia as got out of the van.

“I’ll come with you – I can tell her about Aaron if she hasn’t heard from him.” Frank unbuckled his seat belt and followed his brother.

Betsy Chase had seen the Hardy van pull up to the curb and came outside to thank them for bringing Lydia home. She was pleased to see that the brothers had gotten out of the van.

“Hi, Ms. Chase!” Joe waved as he walked towards her sedan. “I heard you were having some car trouble.”

“And I see you brought your tools!” Ms. Chase smiled.

“Oh, these are just my basic stuff in case of an emergency.”

“Lydia, would you get my car keys? They’re on that little table in the hallway.”

Once Joe had the hood open, he checked the belts and engine. Frank sat inside the car waiting for Joe to tell him to start it up.

“Aha!” crowed Joe. “I see the problem!”

“Will I need to buy any parts?” asked Ms. Chase worriedly.

“No, it’s just a matter of cleaning the battery terminal. All the dirt is blocking the connection. This shouldn’t take long to clean.”

While Joe cleaned the battery terminal, Ms. Chase had Frank call home, and insisted that he and Joe stay for dinner.
