Phil waited nervously outside the high school.  He sat on one of the marble benches watching for the Hardy van. Chatting on the computer with Frank he learned that the brothers were going to be taking Lydia to school.

“Phil, what are you doing out here? Are you feeling all right?”

Phil swiveled his head towards the voice. He blinked a few times as he stared at Miss Tanner, a pretty redhead who taught Honors English at the school.

“Hello, Miss Tanner – I’m…I’m fine. Just waiting on some friends.”

“Are you sure? Your face looks a little flushed.”

Before Phil could assure the teacher that he was fine someone shouted out his name. They both turned to look and saw Joe Hardy waving as he was getting out of the van. Miss Tanner noticed a pretty dark-haired girl in the front seat. She couldn’t make out the girl’s face due to the sunglasses the girl wore. Seeing her, however, did make Miss Tanner understand why Phil looked flushed.

“I see your friends are here. I’ll see you in class…oh! A little warning –pop quiz!” She gave him a small wave as she walked away.

“There’s Phil talking with Miss Tanner,” said Joe glancing over at Frank.

“Who’s Miss Tanner?” Lydia asked Frank as she got out of the van.

“She teaches Honors English.”

“I thought Mr. Hanson taught that class.”

“Oh, he does,” replied Joe. “Bayport High has two teachers for the Honors classes.”

“That keeps the class small so the students can benefit from it,” Frank finished explaining as they neared Phil.

Lydia had her books in a tote bag which Phil offered to carry. The four teens walked into the school building.

Miss Tanner was in the school office looking through the memos that were in her mail cubicle. She happened to look up when someone walked into the office. The door was slowly closing as Frank, Joe, Phil and Lydia were passing by. The Hardy brothers were walking ahead; Lydia was closest to the door. Miss Tanner stared hard at the young girl. She started to stride over when the door closed – she paused for a second then shook her head.

“Anne, are you all right?”

Miss Tanner turned and smiled at Miss Young, the school secretary.

“I’m fine, Beth. I thought I saw someone I knew but…don’t mind me! I’ve got a pop quiz on my mind!”

Miss Tanner went back to her mail cubicle – she knew that she was mistaken. It couldn’t be her!

Callie and Vanessa were the only two who had been told about Lydia. Frank and Joe had told the girls about her during their nightly phone calls. It wasn’t until lunch break that the rest of their friends met the young girl.

Chet was already at their table when Tony and Biff set their lunch trays down.

“Oh man, Chet – what is that?!” Biff grimaced in disgust as he peered at Chet’s plate.

“Its chicken alfredo,” replied Chet as he took a bite.

“Chet…that doesn’t look like alfredo sauce!” Tony gave an exaggerated shiver before he took a bite out of his burger.

“Despite the way it looks, it tastes good!” With that said Chet took a huge mouthful, ignoring the gagging noises that his friends were making.

“Are they bothering you again, Chet?” giggled Callie as she took her seat.

“I thought you brought lunch?” Frank appeared a little confused.

“He did but he ate it during study hall,” answered Joe with a chuckle.

“I had a pop quiz in every one of my classes! My brain needed nourishment!” protested Chet.

Vanessa gently patted Chet on the shoulder: “Leave poor Chet alone…he is a growing boy after all!”

Without missing a beat the group chorused together: “Growing all  round!”

The friends were still laughing when Phil and Lydia showed up. Biff was the first to notice them.

“Hi Phil!” Biff gave Lydia a polite smile.

“Hi Phil, Lydia!” said Joe as he turned around to greet them.

“Hi guys! This is Lydia Barlow – Lydia that’s Tony, Biff and Chet – you already know Frank and Joe.”

“And this is my girlfriend, Callie Shaw.”

Callie waved while scooting over to let Phil and Lydia in.

“And this gorgeous blond is my girlfriend, Vanessa Bender!” Joe said giving Vanessa a kiss on the cheek.

“Don’t let those two ruin your appetite,” said Tony with laughter. “They’re always annoyingly mushy!”

Lydia giggled when Vanessa and Joe stuck their tongues out at Tony and then Vanessa turned Joe’s head giving him a long kiss.

“Now look what you’ve done!” Biff playfully punched Tony in the arm.

“Ahem! Miss Bender, Mr. Hardy – there is a time and place for that.”

Vanessa and Joe quickly pulled apart, both blushing. Joe gave Mr. Hanson a sheepish grin.

“Sorry Mr. Hanson but….Vanessa attacked me!”

“Joe!” squeaked Vanessa with embarrassment.

“Well you did!”

Mr. Hanson just smiled as he walked away to stop two boys who were arguing.

“Before Vanessa decides to beat Joe to a pulp,” began Chet, leaning over to speak with Lydia. “I’m having a party this weekend – would you like to come, Lydia?”

“Well I don’t know if…”

“I can take you…if you’d like me to.” Phil blinked his eyes rapidly – he couldn’t believe he just asked Lydia out in front of everyone.

He wasn’t the only who was surprised. Tony, Chet and Biff all wore similar shocked expressions on their faces.

“I’d really like that, Phil.” Lydia smiled at him then turned back to Chet.  “What kind of party is it? Will I have to dress up?”

“Chet lives out on a farm so just jeans and a nice shirt or sweater will do,” Callie told the young girl.

“I’ll have to ask my…I’ll have to get permission first but I’m sure I can make it.”

“Great!” Chet exclaimed. “Now…did anyone else get bombarded with a pop quiz in every class?!”

The last bell rang ending the school day. Miss Tanner sat at her desk listening to the students leaving the building. She was correcting the last few test papers. When she was done, she entered the grades into her grade book. Anne Tanner got up and stretched – she then walked over to the window and looked out. She could see the student parking lot and spotted the Hardy’s van.

Joe and Frank Hardy suddenly appeared. Behind them was the dark-haired girl. Joe opened the passenger door for her, and she turned to thank him. Miss Tanner gasped….she hadn’t been imagining things.

It was her!
