CHAPTER 14

Joe Hardy stood in the huddle panting for breath, gazing at his fellow teammates. His sapphire blue eyes were sparkling with excitement. There was seven seconds on the clock and the Bayport University Cougars were using their last time out. They had a chance to tie the game with a three point field goal and go into overtime. Or they could try for a touchdown and win the game. The Cougars wanted to win the game!

Joe suddenly began to feel nervous; this was his chance to show the coach and the rest of his teammates that he could play college ball. Joe knew that he was very lucky to be in this game. As a freshman and second-string quarterback, he wasn’t really supposed to be playing.

Although the coach thought that Joe was an exceptional player, he never placed a freshman as a first-string player, wanting them to get more experience first. So Joe was the third back-up quarterback. Unfortunately, Jack Sullivan, the first string back-up had been caught cheating on his finals exam and had been suspended. Joe suddenly found himself elevated up to first string. Knowing he would never get another chance like this, Joe buckled down and not only kept his grades up, but religiously studied the playbook.

Josh Taylor, the first-string quarterback, took Joe under his wing. This was Josh’s last year at Bayport U. and he wanted to make it a memorable year. The Cougars needed one more win to make it to a Bowl game. Two days before the big game, the team was putting in one last practice when Josh broke his leg, and Joe now found himself the starting quarterback.

He took a deep breath, pushing all of his nervous fear into the back of his mind. Focusing on the play. Scanning the crowd, Joe tried to find Frank. Just as he was in his position, he found him. Standing  a few feet away from the university team, Frank gave Joe a thumbs up sign. By his side stood Callie and Vanessa; both girls smiled and waved.

Feeling more confident, Joe turned his attention back to the game. He got into position, kneeling down Joe turned his head slightly and smiled at his place kicker who gave a small nod of his head. They were ready.

Joe yelled out the cadence and caught the ball, the place kicker stepped up, then faked a kick, Joe flicked the ball to the place kicker…as the other team rushed after the ball…the kicker threw the ball to Joe, who ran towards the end zone! By the time the other team realized what had happened it was too late…Joe caught the ball and hugged it close to his body, and ran…he was at the ten-yard line…he could hear the crowd cheering…the referee blew his whistle, his arms up in the air indicating a touchdown…the Bayport crowd stood up and cheered as the clock counted down to zero just after Joe stepped across the goal line.

Joe suddenly felt himself lifted up in the air as his fellow teammates celebrated their win. The Bayport Cougars were going to a Bowl game! The football field was soon thronged with fans of the team. Searching for Frank, Joe couldn’t seem to find him on the crowded field.

The players finally made it back into the locker room. The players were high-fiving one another. Joe walked over to Kevin, his place kicker. Kevin had taken off his jersey, his chocolate-brown skin glistening with sweat. He was a few inches shorter than Joe and his wiry build made the younger Hardy think of his good friend, Tony Prito.

“You did good, Hardy!” Kevin said as he patted Joe on his shoulder.

“Thanks but I wasn’t the only one who did a great job! Awesome throw there!”

“I don’t know how good it would have been if we hadn’t done all that practicing out on the field.”

Joe agreed. “I kind of wish that Josh would be out of his cast by the time we get to San Antonio for the Bowl game. I’m not sure if my nerves can handle that kind of pressure!”

Kevin laughed and gave Joe a playful shove. “Man, you have nothing to worry about. If you play as well as you did tonight, you’ll do just fine.”

“I’ll be glad when this is all over! Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve seen my girlfriend?!”

As Kevin headed for the showers, his laughter could be heard echoing through the locker room.

Freshly showered and back in his street clothes, Joe walked out into the university parking lot and got a pleasant surprise.

“Dad!” Joe quickened his steps and gave Fenton a hug. “I thought you were still in D.C.!”

“There was no way I’d miss you playing tonight!” Fenton beamed at his youngest son, his face filled with pride. “I finished up the job and got back here as soon as I could.”

“I’m glad you could make it, Dad.”

“I’m glad too, son.” He placed an arm around Joe’s shoulder and started walking towards the car. “Now, let’s get you home, your Aunt Gertrude has prepared a feast!”

“Good, because I’m starving!”

As Joe entered the house, he was greeted by Frank, who pulled him into a bear hug. Laura was the next person to give him a hug; Joe bent down so she could also kiss his cheek. Callie congratulated Joe on the win as did Con Riley and Chief Collig. Although Con had been working security during the game, he was able to catch a few plays.

As Joe smiled and made sure to give the whole team credit for the win, his eyes sought someone. Then he saw her, standing in a corner giving him that special smile. Joe slowly made his way to the tall ash-blonde with grayish-blue eyes.

“Hello, beautiful,” he whispered in a husky voice. He then pulled her into an embrace and kissed her passionately.

Vanessa Bender let out a small sigh as she melted into his arms.
