CHAPTER 14

Todd was frantic – he had to find Joe! Reaching inside his pocket for his cell phone, Todd discovered a business card. There were several numbers written on the back of the card; turning it over he read: Fenton Hardy, Private Investigator.

Todd flashed back to the restaurant: as Fenton led Joe out the door, Frank had given him the business card in case he remembered any place that Steven might be. Todd tried the first phone number which happened to be Frank’s.

Frank stood staring at the car as if he were willing Joe to appear. He was about to search the garage when he heard something that made him cringe. He took out his cell phone, glaring at it as the sounds of a popular hip-hop song chimed. Joe had programmed the song one night; he had also changed the password so Frank was unable to change it.

“Hello, Frank Hardy here.”

“Frank! Thank goodness I found you! This is Todd…Coach Butler! Stevie…my cousin Stevie…I think he has Vanessa and he’s going after Joe!”

With growing horror, Frank knew what happened to his little brother. “I have a feeling that he already has Joe.”

They rode in silence, Joe had a lot of questions he wanted to ask – “Is Vanessa okay” – “Is she hurt” – “Why – why take her?” But Joe was afraid to hear the answers. He would occasionally glance over at Steven, wondering what the man was thinking – wondering how he could get Vanessa away from him.

As he drove to his parent’s home, Steven was bristling with anger. Why did Blondie keep staring at him? He finally arrived at the house, glad to be getting out of the car at last.

Joe followed Steven inside the house, then down a small hallway. Steven stopped at a closed door. “She’s in here,” he said as he opened the door.

Joe pushed past him when he saw Vanessa tied up on the bed.

Vanessa had been staring up at the wall; she turned her head when she heard someone opening the door. Her eyes went wide with shock when she saw Joe, but her shock soon turned to fear when she saw Steven, his hands raised in the air.

Joe, too relieved to have found Vanessa alive and well, didn’t pay attention to Steven. It wasn’t until he felt the pain in the back of his head that he realized his mistake.

Frank had just finished talking with Todd when his cell phone rang again. He quickly answered the call when he recognized the number.

“Hello, Dad!”

“Frank, I want you to go to the S.A. police station, at the corner of Main St. and Soledad. Ask for a Lt. Danvers. I’m going to try and get hold of Todd –“

“No need to do that, Dad. I’m on my way to pick him up. Steven came to see him…Dad, Todd thinks Steven has Vanessa.”

“From what I saw on the security tape – he does.”

“There’s something else you need to know, Dad – “ Frank paused for a moment. “Joe is missing, and it’s a safe bet that he’s with Steven.”

Frank waited for Fenton to say something; when there was no reply he was afraid the phone reception had been cut off.

“Hurry and get here as quick as you can, son,” Fenton finally replied.

The first thing Joe became aware of was the sound of someone softly crying. The second thing was the pounding pain in his head. He slowly raised his head.

“Joe – speak to me, please!”

Vanessa – it was Vanessa he had heard crying! Joe squinted one eye open and saw that she was still tied to the bed. He gave her a wan smile. “Hey – are you okay? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“I’m fine – what about you – how’s your head?”

“Just great – didn’t feel a thing!”

“Yeah, right. Is that why you’ve only got one eye open?”

“Your beauty is overwhelming…I have to take it in a little at a time,” replied Joe in a teasing manner.

Vanessa didn’t know whether to laugh or cry; she could see that Joe was in pain. He was just being too stubborn to admit it!

“Van, where did Steven go?”

“Steven? Oh, you mean Coach Butler’s evil twin…he said something about having dinner and then going to bed.”

“Good, that gives us some time. Do you think you can get out of those ropes?”

“Maybe…I noticed that he didn’t tie up my right hand very tight…I think I can slip it out.”

“Try Vanessa, try and see if you can get loose. Then I want you to go call for help.”

“We’ll both go for help!” Vanessa declared as she began pulling her hand to free it.

While Frank and Todd were with Fenton at the police station. Steven had changed his mind about going to bed. Instead, he drove back to the La Quinta hotel to find Todd. His cousin should be there when he started to teach Joe Hardy his lesson.
