CHAPTER 14

Joe watched as Vanessa struggled to get loose; his head was pounding and he felt slightly nauseous. He wondered what Steven had used to hit him with. Vanessa let out a triumphant cry as she slipped her wrist through the knot. She twisted to her left and began to untie her other hand. Both hands now free, Vanessa sat up and untied her legs. She then got off the bed and knelt at Joe’s feet. Hugging him as best she could, she kissed his face, tears clouding her vision.

“Are you sure you’re okay? He hit you so hard with that walking stick!”

Joe opened his mouth – he wanted to be glib – to remind Vanessa about his hard head. But the pounding pain that he felt had Joe telling her the truth.

“I guess my head isn’t as hard as everyone thought. I’ve got the worst headache and I feel fairly light-headed. I think you might have to help me, Van.”

A determined expression on her face, Vanessa gave Joe a curt nod and began to untie the ropes around his wrists.

Steven had come to a stop at the end of the block. He wasn’t sure if he could convince Todd to come back with him. He thought that he should bring something to persuade his cousin. Steven knew that his father kept a small handgun in his bedroom. His decision made, Steven made a U-turn and drove back to the house.

*****

With Todd’s help, Frank was able to find the police station. Walking up to the desk sergeant, Frank let him know that Lt. Danvers was expecting them. Taking the stairs two at a time, Todd and Frank soon arrived on the second floor and quickly found Lt. Danvers’ small office.

Fenton was listening to Lt. Danvers read a police report on Steven Parker. The two men looked up when Frank knocked on the door.

“Frank, I’m glad you got here. Tom, this is my oldest son, Frank – Frank, this is Lt. Tom Danvers.”

“Hello, Lt. Danvers, and this is Todd Butler.”

After greeting Todd, Lt. Danvers took the three men into one of the interrogation rooms and put on the security tape from the gas station. They sat silently as they watched Vanessa walk out of the store; the next scene showed her confronting the person she had been following. It looked as if Vanessa was about to turn and leave when she was suddenly pulled forward. Then next image they saw was the back end of a Volkswagen backing up.

“One of our video experts was able to get a better shot of the license plate; we should have the assailant’s address in just a few minutes,” Lt. Danvers informed Frank and Todd.

Vanessa had just gotten Joe’s bonds loose when Steven arrived. He quietly entered the house and headed straight for his parents’ bedroom.

Helping Joe out of the chair, Vanessa held onto his waist as he placed his arm around her shoulders. They slowly walked over to the door….

Steven found the gun; checking to make sure it was loaded, he stuffed it into his belt. Walking out of the bedroom he saw the retreating forms of Joe and Vanessa.

“Stop right there!”

They hesitated for a second and were about to run when they heard a distinct noise that chilled their hearts. Joe and Vanessa slowly turned around and found themselves staring down the barrel of a .38 special.

*****

Frank sat in the back seat of a police cruiser as they raced towards the home of Steven Parker, no lights, no sirens. He just hoped that they would make it in time to save Joe and Vanessa.

Sitting beside Frank, Todd chewed on his thumbnail. Before they left the police station, he had called Connie. He had wanted to make sure that she was safe. Todd had also called Coach Burns; he thought the coach should know what was happening with their quarterback. He smiled as he thought what the coach had said when he heard the news: “Damn the game, just find that kid and bring him back safe!”

Fenton Hardy had ridden with Lt. Danvers in the first car.

“Okay, gentlemen, we’re almost there. I need you to stay in the car!”

Todd nodded at the officer; Officer Olivia Gonzales gave the two men a hard glare. She wanted to make sure they understood her command. She aimed her glare mostly at Frank, she had a feeling he would be trouble. She had heard that one of the victims was this young man’s brother.

“You’re Frank Hardy, right?”

“Yes…”

“I know your brother is one of the hostages and if he were my brother I’d want to go out there too. But do you think your brother would want you to get hurt?”

Frank knew what Officer Gonzales said was true – but that didn’t mean he had to like it!

The vehicles began to slow down; as they approached the house frank could feel his hopes falling. There were no lights on in the house; it seemed to be deserted. He watched as the police officers cautiously drew near the house, guns drawn. Frank waited anxiously as the officers searched the house and the grounds. Leaning his head against the window, his eyes closed in despair as he heard: “All clear!”

*****

Joe pulled Vanessa close as he stared at the gun. He could feel her body trembling although she tried not to show her fear.

“You can’t leave – at least not until Todd gets here.”

Joe didn’t like the way Steven’s hand was shaking; he was afraid that he might accidently fire the gun. “I guess Vanessa and I can stay a little longer,” he answered. “Right, Babe?”

“Don’t call her that! She’s not your ‘Babe’!” Steven yelled as he began to wave the gun. “She’s Todd’s girl –not yours!” He steadied the gun and aimed it at Joe. “I guess I’ll just have to teach you your lesson now!”

Vanessa let out a scream as she used her body to cover Joe.

There was a loud bang; Joe felt Vanessa’s arms go around him. She clutched him tightly and then slowly began to slide down the floor.

“VANESSA!!”
