THE CHAPTERS |
Fenton got out of the cruiser; he turned and saw his
oldest son’s look of despair. He walked over to the car Frank was in
and tapped on the window. He waited for Frank to move back before opening
the door. “We’ll find them, Frank,” he assured his son. Frank could only nod his head. He was vaguely aware of
Todd getting out of the car. Turning his attention to Todd, Fenton hoped
that this man would know where his cousin could be. “Todd, where do you
think Steven could have taken them?” “I don’t…” Todd paused; he shook his head as
the thought filtered through his brain. “Mr. Hardy…there is only one
place I can think of, but – he would only take them there if no one was
at home – unless…” Todd began to shake with fear as he thought of
the danger his aunt and uncle could be in. “Unless what, Todd?” “Unless he hurt his parents – Steven’s childhood
home is just a few blocks away from here.” “Get back inside the car; I’m going to inform Lt.
Danvers!” Fenton ran to find the Lieutenant. ***** Joe immediately applied pressure to Vanessa’s
shoulder, trying not to panic as he felt her blood seeping through his
fingers. “No – nooo- I can’t lose you, too!” Joe
muttered over and over. Getting control of his emotions, he took off his
light jacket he was wearing, then pulled off the long-sleeved shirt he
wore. Tearing the shirt into long strips, Joe used his jacket as a
bandage. He then used his torn shirt to keep it tied to Vanessa’s
wound. Joe shivered a little from the cold, vaguely aware of Steven
muttering to himself as he tried to help Vanessa. “She wasn’t suppose to get hurt…you were the
one…Todd is going to be so mad!” Joe was now gently stroking Vanessa’s hair, his eyes
burning with unshed tears. “Please Van, not you, too – please, baby,
I can’t loose you,” he whispered softly. As he caressed her face, in
his mind’s eye he kept seeing a ball of fire…hearing a loud
explosion…He could feel the searing heat. Joe shut his eyes tight,
willing the image to go away. He hadn’t been able to help Iola, but he
could help Vanessa! With steely determination, he carefully lifted
Vanessa off the floor. Cradling her in his arms, he turned to face
Steven. ***** As the police headed towards the Parker home, Todd
prayed that his aunt and uncle were still alive. Fenton rode with Lt. Danvers; he prayed that his son
and Vanessa were not hurt or worse…dead. Frank sat tensely; there was no way he was staying in
the car this time. He was bound and determined to go into the house. Joe
needed him…he could feel it…Joe was in danger and Frank had to –
no, needed to be there! Todd sat forward, “There, the last house on the
left.” Frank placed his hand on the door handle, ready to
jump out as soon as the car slowed down. “I’m on my way
little brother…just hold on…hold on and be safe!” Steven stared at Joe, his faced filled with confusion. “Get out of my way, Steven,” Joe said softly. “What?” Although he still held the gun in his
hand, Steven wasn’t using it in a threatening way. Joe took a step forward. “I’m taking Vanessa out
of here.” “NO!” He raised the gun at Joe. “You can’t
leave…no one can leave!” Joe’s eyes turned a dark blue as an intense anger
surged through his body. When he saw the murderous glare on Joe’s face,
Steven wanted to drop the gun and run away. But he held his ground,
swallowing back his fear. Not taking his eyes off Steven, Joe lowered Vanessa
back onto the floor. Slowly standing up, he faced Steven, determined to
fight his way out if he had to. Joe cautiously approached Steven, his
face a grim mask of anger. As the police cruiser slowed down, Frank opened the
back door and leapt out of the car. “What the…Anderson – how in the world did he get
that door open!?” “I…I don’t know! Unless he never closed it
properly!” Taking his chance, Todd quickly slid across the seat
and got out of the car, running after Frank. “What does your son think he’s doing?!” Lt.
Danvers shouted at Fenton, who quickly turned his head to see what was
going on. “He’s going to rescue his brother,” replied
Fenton calmly. Steven took a step back; the hand holding the gun
shook slightly. “I’ll shoot you! I swear I will!” “Then that’s what you’re going to have to do,
because I’m leaving and taking Vanessa with me.” He wanted to frighten Joe, so Steven raised the gun
into the air and fired. But Joe kept walking towards him. Hearing the gunshot, Todd ran past Frank, rushing into
the house. “Steven!” Hearing his cousin’s voice, Steven glanced back.
That was the opening Joe needed. He lunged at his assailant, took hold of
Steven’s wrist and tried to pry the gun out of his hand.
