CHAPTER 14

The next morning, Frank quietly opened the door that connected his room to Joe’s. He smiled when he saw the large lump on the bed that he knew was his younger brother. Buried deep inside the blankets, the only thing visible was a tuft of blonde hair.

Frank was extremely proud of his brother. Joe had proved himself to be more than just a “dumb jock”. Although he was originally only the third back-up quarterback, Joe never let his grades slip.

Closing the door, Frank headed down to the kitchen for some breakfast. He was up early as usual. As he measured out the coffee grounds, hearing a noise Frank looked up to find his Aunt Gertrude walking into the kitchen.

“Good morning, Frank – what are you doing up so early?”

“Good morning – habit, I guess.”

Gertrude Hardy chuckled; even as a little boy, Frank never was on to sleep late. “Would you like me to make you some breakfast?”

“No thank you, just toast will be fine.”

Frank had to hold in his laughter when he heard his aunt grunt disapprovingly. Aunt Gertrude had always been a staunch believer in ‘breakfast being the most important meal of the day’. As Frank drank his coffee and munched on his slice of toast, he wondered when Joe would finally wake up that sunny Saturday morning.

*****

It was just a few minutes past ten a.m. when Joe came stumbling down the stairs, still clad in the rock T-shirt and boxers he wore to bed, his blonde hair in a ruffled tangled mess. Laura laughed softly to herself; she noticed that Joe had one sock on, but his left foot was bare. She gently led him to a chair and then kissed his cheek.

“Good morning, sweetie.”

As Joe let out a huge yawn, something sounding like “Morning, Mom,” was heard to come out of his mouth. Aunt Gertrude made a tsking noise, shaking her head in disapproval.

Frank came into the kitchen from the back door. His cheeks were flushed pink from the cold; he took off his gloves and stuffed them in the pocket of his jacket. “The front and back sidewalk are shoveled, Mom.”

“Thank you, Frank. Why don’t you sit down and I’ll get you a cup of coffee.”

Frank walked over to the kitchen table when he saw Joe; he couldn’t help what he did next. Although he wore gloves, his hands were still cold; he pressed the palms of his hands against Joe’s cheeks.

“Good morning, little brother!”

“AAAGH!!!” Glaring at his older brother, who was grinning happily at him, Joe yelled: “Mom! Frank’s touching me!”

“Frank, don’t touch your brother.” Laura mumbled as she set two cups of coffee on the table.

“Both in college and you would think they’d stop behaving like little scoundrels!” Gertrude huffed disapprovingly, although there was a small twinkle of merriment in her eyes.

Joe sat silently sipping his coffee and glaring at his brother. Frank, sitting across from Joe, just smiled and winked as he took a drink of his morning beverage.

“Ah, I see the famous Bayport Cougars quarterback has awakened!” Fenton said cheerily as he entered the kitchen. He gave his wife a kiss and his sister Gertrude a morning greeting. “Mmm, are those your delicious blueberry muffins, Gert?”

“You’re very chirper this morning, Fenton,” Gertrude noted.

“It’s not every day your son wins a championship game and I have the time to take my wife and family to San Antonio to watch him play in another big game!”

This immediately got Joe’s attention! He raised his head up, his bright blue eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Really, Dad?!”

“Yes, my schedule is all clear!”

Joe jumped up off the chair and went to hug Fenton.

Gertrude caught sight of what her young nephew was wearing. Her back had been turned when he walked in. “Joseph Hardy! Why aren’t you wearing a robe?!” Letting out a long suffering sigh when Joe just smiled at her, she added, “Well, at least it’s an improvement on what you used to wear! Thank goodness you outgrew those Spiderman Under-roos!”

After breakfast, once he showered and changed into clean clothes, Joe went to visit Vanessa. He had a lot of cuddling to catch up on!

Somewhere in San Antonio, Texas….

In a small two-bedroom house a lone figure sat in a darkened room. A large scrapbook lay on top of a desk. The person sat hunched over the desk. Brownish-hazel eyes took in articles and pictures, light brown hair hung limply from not having been washed in several days.

Picking up a pair of scissors, the figure cut out the small black and white picture, placing it lovingly in the scrapbook. ‘Yes, that is the spot for it!’ Turning the picture over and carefully pouring some glue on the back. Satisfied with the amount of glue, carefully picking up the picture and placing it where it belonged. Pushing firmly so that the glue would hold it in place.

Frowning, and running fingers through the greasy hair….

‘Time to wash my hair, I need to start looking my best when they come!’
