THE CHAPTERS |
Joe lay comfortably on the floor in front of the fireplace, Vanessa snuggled in his arms. He had really missed these moments alone with her. Football practice and keeping up with his studies had taken up a lot of his spare time. Although he saw Vanessa at school and they spoke almost every night on the phone, it just wasn’t the same as holding her in his arms. Twirling a lock of her hair around his finger, Joe let out a contented sigh. “When do you have to leave for San Antonio?” “Thursday I think; depends how much money we can raise to fly out there instead of taking a bus.” “I thought the Athletic department had funds for that.” Vanessa looked up at Joe with a puzzled expression on her face. “They do but it’s not enough to fly the whole team out and pay for hotel accommodations,” Joe replied. “Has anyone thought of how the money will be raised?” “We’ve been throwing out ideas. Wish we could do a car wash but it’s too cold!” Suddenly Vanessa sat up; she turned to Joe with an excited look on her face. “I’ve got it! How about an auction?!” “An auction – what would we auction off?” “All kinds of things! You could ask Mr. Prito if he would offer a free dinner! Maybe you could ask Callie if her dad would give out a shopping spree at his hardware store!” Joe raised himself on his elbows, a thoughtful expression on his face. “Actually, Van…” Joe paused for a second and then continued: “you know Todd…he mentioned having an auction…but his idea was to auction off dates with the players…” “No – don’t even think about it…you are NOT going to be auctioned off!” A sly grin crossed Joe’s face. “You mean you don’t want to share? You’re going to deprive some young woman of my good looks and charm?” For an answer, Joe was hit in the face with a throw pillow, which caused him to fall back onto the floor. He could hear Vanessa giggling as he took the pillow off his face. Slowly raising himself up, Joe pretended to glare at her. “You don realize what his means, don’t you?” he growled. “You wouldn’t dare!” Vanessa smirked at her boyfriend. With a sigh, Joe reluctantly put the pillow down. “Yeah, you’re right. I can even hear Aunt Gertrude telling me boys aren’t supposed to hit girls.” He let out another sigh: “So I guess I’m going to have to tickle you instead!” Vanessa let out a small scream as Joe lunged for her. She managed to grab another throw pillow. Hollering with laughter, she feebly hit Joe with the pillow. Andrea Bender was in the kitchen pouring some hot chocolate into two mugs when she heard her daughter scream, then laugh. Shaking her head, she wondered what the two young people were up to. Walking into the living room, she found Vanessa lying on the floor; her face read and tears falling from her face from laughing so hard. Vanessa was hitting Joe’s head with a throw pillow as he kneeled over her daughter tickling her. “Ahem!” Andrea bit back a smile as Joe looked up. His hair was a mess, sticking up every which way. Vanessa was trying to catch her breath; she hit Joe right in the face with the pillow. “Get off of me, you big lug, before I have my mom beat you up!” “Big lug? I thought you liked the fact I was a Neanderthal?!” Joe pouted as he helped Vanessa up off the floor. “That was before you had her pinned to the floor,” Andrea smirked. “I made you some hot chocolate, but after what I saw just now…I’m not sure all this sugar is a good idea.” “She started it!” Joe said with a smile as he took one of the mugs and thanked Mrs. Bender. “Oh, just you wait, Joe Hardy!” “Promises, promises!” ***** Vanessa’s suggestion of an auction was met with resounding approval from the players. Several players, who did not have a steady girlfriend, were put up for “auction” for a date or manual labor. Mr. Prito gladly donated a dinner for two; Mr. Shaw donated a shopping spree, worth five hundred dollars. Not wanting to be left out, the cheerleaders also auctioned themselves out for a date or babysitting services. Hurd Applegate, Bayport’s most prominent citizen gave the university a pleasant surprise when he announced that he would match the amount that the football players raised from the auction. ****** Joe stood in the back of the banquet hall watching as one of the wide receivers was being auctioned off. “Hi Joe – why aren’t you up there? I know a lot of girls who would pay big money for a chance with you!” Joe turned and smiled at Todd Butler, the assistant coach. “I tried but Vanessa didn’t think it was a good idea. Never mind me, what about you?” Todd Butler was an inch shorter than Joe, with light brown hair, hazel eyes, and a lean, muscular build. He laughed softly and shook his head in a negative manner. “Nope, not me! I’m not that good looking!” “Who’s not good looking?” Vanessa had just walked up holding a napkin filled with cookies. “Todd doesn’t think he is,” answered Joe as he stole a cookie. “That’s not what I hear in the girl’s locker room. I think half the freshman have a crush on you, Todd.” Joe remembered something about his assistant coach. “Aren’t you from San Antonio?” “Yeah, I grew up there.” Joe was trying to get another cookie from Vanessa and didn’t notice the sad expression on Todd’s face when he answered. “You must be pretty jazzed to be going back then.” Joe said. Forcing a smile on his face, Todd replied: “Yeah, really jazzed.”
