CHAPTER 14

Todd Butler turned the key to unlock his apartment door, and walked into his small one-bedroom apartment. The auction had been a great success; they had raised enough money for airfare tickets for the team and hotel accommodations. Hanging his keys on the nail he had placed on the wall, Todd went into the kitchen. He took out a cold can of soda from the fridge and made his way back to the living room. Plopping down onto the sofa, he popped open the can and took a long swallow. Scrunching down, he laid his head on the back of the sofa, staring up at the ceiling.

Home. In a few days he would be going back home. He had been dreading this day ever since Bayport made it to the finals. Todd thought he was probably the only person who was praying that they would lose the game. That Joe Hardy would play the worst game of his life. Would anyone remember him? It had been ten years since that tragic day and it wasn’t like San Antonio was a small town, the way Bayport was. Granted, San Antonio wasn’t a major city like New York, but it was still a lot larger than Bayport.

Would any of his old friends still be there? Todd knew his parents no longer lived there and he never kept in touch with any of his other relatives.

“Why’d we get the Alamo Bowl? Why couldn’t we have gone to Hawaii or California!? Anywhere but Texas!” Todd lamented. Finishing the rest of the soda, he squeezed the can wishing he had something stronger to drink. Getting off the sofa, he ambled back to the kitchen and tossed the crushed can into the trash. Todd then headed towards his bedroom, peeling off his shirt as he went down the small hallway.

‘I’m probably worrying over nothing. Besides he…he probably doesn’t even live there anymore.’

                                                 ******

Thursday morning came too soon for Todd as he waited to board the plane bound for San Antonio. He watched some of the players saying their goodbyes to family members or girlfriends and boyfriends. He spotted Joe and his family. Todd knew that they would be traveling with the team. Todd sat a little straighter in his chair. Fenton Hardy was a detective, and Joe and his older brother Frank were following in his footsteps. Todd had a sudden need to sit next to Joe when they boarded the plane.

Joe stood with arm around Vanessa’s waist; he smiled at Frank who was holding Callie’s hand. He looked over at his parents, his smile growing wider as Fenton leaned down to kiss Laura’s cheek. Joe glanced at his brother; Frank had also caught the tender moment between his parents and beamed.

A rollercoaster of emotions were running through Joe. He was happy, excited and scared all at the same time. Happy that Fenton and Laura would be at the game – it wasn’t often that Fenton got to see his sons play, but when he did, it made that time more special. Excited to be starting in an important game such as the Alamo Bowl. Scared to be starting in such an important game! Joe was glad that his family and friends could be here with him.

Soon the boarding call was announced; the Hardys, Callie and Vanessa turned to get ready and board the plane. Todd started to approach Joe when Coach Burns caught his attention.

“Butler, I want to discuss some new plays I came up with. I want your input on them.”

“Um, sure thing. After all, that’s what I’m here for.”

Todd watched as Joe moved ahead of him. He would have to wait till they got to the hotel and try getting Joe alone.

*Somewhere in San Antonio*….

                                                 *******

He brushed back his hair; it was too long, and he knew he should have gotten a haircut. It was too late to do anything about it now. Checking the time, the young man scrutinized his wardrobe. Satisfied with what he saw, he grabbed his keys and walked out of his house. It was time to go to the airport. His plane would be landing soon and he wanted to be there to greet him.

The young man shook with excitement; he couldn’t wait to see how surprised his cousin was going to be. It had been ten long years since they’d seen each other. A lot had happened since that day so long ago.

“I hope you can forgive me, cousin. I need you to forgive me.”

                                                 ******

The traffic was heavy, causing him to arrive after the plane had already landed. Thinking that he could still catch his cousin, he parked the car at the curb. He didn’t think it would be towed, not if he explained that his cousin wasn’t expecting him.

As he slowly made his way to the front doors, he saw a large group exit the building. He scanned the faces, his heart beating rapidly in his chest. Then he saw him standing next to a pretty girl with ash-blonde hair. The girl laughed at something he said. He watched as most of the group boarded a chartered bus. Suddenly a young man with blonde hair stuck his head out the window of the bus. He was speaking to his cousin, who pulled the girl close and winked at the blonde boy. Another young man stood behind his cousin. Taller than his cousin, the dark-haired man waved at the blonde in the bus.

Joe boarded the chartered bus with the rest of the players; he leaned out the window and saw Vanessa standing next to Todd.

“Hey Coach Butler, leave my girl alone!” Joe shouted in a teasing voice.

Todd put his arm around Vanessa’s waist and pulled her close; she laughed good naturedly.

“Sorry Joe, why do you think I convinced Coach Burns to let you play!? I was after this beauty all along!”

Frank had walked up. Listening to the teasing banter, he shouted over at Joe: “Hey little brother, you want me to beat him up for you? Because you know I will!”

Joe started laughing when Frank started to growl at his coach. Todd rolled his eyes and gently shoved Frank out of his way. He then boarded the bus, but not before he blew a kiss at Vanessa, who pretended to swoon. By now, Callie had joined Frank; taking Vanessa’s hand she led her away.

“Meet us at the Hertz rental desk; your dad is almost done with the paperwork.”

“Okay, I’ll be there in a second.” Frank walked over to the bus and looked up at Joe. “See you at the hotel, little brother.”

“See you, Frank, and thanks for trying to save my butt once again!”

He watched Frank leave and then followed the bus, all the while seething with rage. How dare they threaten his cousin!
