CHAPTER 14

Todd found that Joe was sitting alone, and made his way towards him.

“Hey Joe, mind if I sit here?”

“No, go right ahead.”

Joe noticed that the assistant coach seemed a bit nervous; thinking that he was worried about the game, he asked: “You worried about the game?”

“What?” Todd jumped a bit from fright; he then chuckled softly. “Sorry – I am worried but it has nothing to do with the game.”

Joe was puzzled but he waited patiently for Todd to speak. He watched as the coach chewed on his lower lip. Making sure that no one else was listening, Todd leaned a little closer to Joe and spoke in low tones.

“Joe, I need to speak to you – but not here. Can I meet with you later and could you bring your brother and dad with you?”

His curiosity now piqued, Joe readily agreed to meet with Todd in his room later that night.

Ten minutes later, the bus arrived at La Quinta, the hotel where the Bayport football team was staying. Dan Burns, the head coach and Todd went into the lobby to register the team to their rooms. A few university staff members were helping to keep the players in line. They waited for the coaches while they tried to keep some order.

Todd didn’t see anyone at the registration desk; he rang the bell that sat on the desk. A woman with auburn hair and blue eyes came out of the back room. She had a smile on her face which faltered when she saw Todd.

“Hello, Todd,” the woman said in a soft, lilting voice.

“Connie – I can’t believe you’re still here!” Todd smiled but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. His eyes showed sorrow and guilt.

“Yeah, I’m still here.” She gave Coach Burns a small smile. “Todd and I are old friends from way back when. But you don’t care about that, you want to rent a room – how can I help you?”

“A reservation was made for Bayport University.” Coach Burns glanced at Todd for a second and then turned his attention back to Connie.

Connie typed in the information on the hotel computer. “Yes, we managed to keep the team together. You basically have the back section to yourselves. I just need you to fill this card out and I’ll give you your keys.”

“You look really great, Connie.”

“Thank you – you’re looking pretty good too.”

Todd found that he couldn’t keep his eyes off her; he had so many questions to ask her. Was she seeing anyone – was she married – had she seen him? Coach Burns returned the hotel registration card to Connie.

“Enjoy your stay and good luck at the game!” Connie avoided making eye contact with Todd; she began typing the information from the small white card.

Todd stood quietly for a few minutes, willing Connie to look at him. With a small sigh, he finally turned and followed Coach Burns outside. Connie raised her head slightly and watched as Todd left the lobby.

“Connie, are you okay?”

Connie gave her assistant a sad smile. “Yeah, I’m okay, Lori.” Can you watch the desk for a few minutes?”

“Sure no problem.”

“Thanks!” Connie ran out the door; she wasn’t sure if she could find Todd, but they definitely needed to talk. As she went down the walkway, Connie started to feel silly. She didn’t know what room he was going to be in, and she didn’t want to knock on every door. Connie was going around a corner when she suddenly bumped into a young blonde-haired man.

Joe took hold of the woman’s arm, preventing her from falling down from the impact.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t see you there!” Joe gave her an apologetic smile.

“Not your fault, I was kind of in a hurry and not watching where I was going. Are you one of the football players here to play in the Alamo Bowl?”

“Yes, I am. I’m the quarterback for the Bayport Cougars.”

“This is so perfect – do you know where I can find Todd Butler?!”

Before Joe had a chance to reply, they were interrupted. “Hey Joe wait up!”

Todd was running over towards him. He was surprised to find Connie standing next to Joe.

“This mystery woman was asking where to find you.” Joe said.

“She’s no mystery woman, Joe.  This is an old friend. Connie Garcia, meet Joe Hardy.”

“Who are you calling ‘old’, Butler?”

Joe took a step back, smiling mischievously at his coach. “Well, I’m going to be heading off now. It was nice bumping into you, Miss Garcia!”

“Thanks for nothing, Joe!” Todd yelled as Joe ran to the front of the hotel.

“Todd, I think we should talk. There’s a Denny’s just around the corner…”

“I think that’s a good idea, lead the way.”

                                                *******

Frank waved when he saw Joe come running down the walkway.

“I hope you’re hungry for Mexican food, Dad found a great restaurant.”

“You know me; I can eat just about anything!”

“You’re right, why did I even bother to ask?”

Joe got into the car; he playfully punched Frank in the arm.

“Did you and Callie have plans for later tonight?”

“No, we hadn’t made any – why?”

“Coach Butler wants to speak with us and Dad.”

“Oh – what about?”

“I don’t know but he seemed…nervous!”

Frank didn’t make any comments, but his interest was piqued.
