THE CHAPTERS |
Joe leaned over and kissed Vanessa lightly on her cheek. He pressed his mouth close to her ear and whispered: “Van, are you going to eat that last taco?” Then he let out a yelp as Vanessa jammed her elbow into his solar plexus. “You’ve got a dangerous weapon there!” “And you have a way with words. You really know how to make a girl swoon, Joe Hardy!” “I do try my best!” Joe replied with a mischievous grin. “So, can I?” Rolling her eyes in exasperation, Vanessa slid her plate towards Joe. Frank, who had been watching his brother’s antics, was laughing softly. Callie was also giggling as she glanced at Vanessa. “Wanna trade?” Vanessa asked her petite friend. “Not on your life!” Callie gave Frank a quick hug. “I guess I’m stuck with him then.” Vanessa let out a long sigh. Joe wiped his mouth with his napkin and pulled her into a hug. “You know you love me too much to get rid of me!” Trying to look displeased as Joe held her, Vanessa couldn’t keep from laughing a few seconds later. “Yeah, you’re right.” Fenton was shaking his head, a smile on his face. Joe would never change, he thought happily. “Well, now that Joe has eaten off of everyone’s plate – it’s time to head back to the hotel.” Fenton signaled to the waiter for their check.
“Uh…Dad – I need you to come back to my hotel.” Joe grinned sheepishly at Fenton. One eyebrow raised, Fenton waited patiently for Joe to continue. “Coach Butler wanted to speak to you – and Frank! He seemed really worried about something.” Callie and Vanessa groaned in frustration, Laura let out a sigh. “Joe, this is supposed to be a mini-vacation! Did you have to find a mystery for your brother and father to solve?” “Mom, I don’t even know if this is a mystery! It’s just that Coach Butler seemed worried…and a little nervous!” “I’m sure it’s nothing, I won’t be gone long.” Fenton quickly paid the bill and then kissed Laura. “Come on boys, let’s get this over with as quickly as possible!” Laura stopped Fenton before he could walk away. “I need the keys to the rental. You can go with Frank in his.” “Good thing I thought of renting two cars!” Fenton gave Laura the keys. ******* Todd couldn’t stop staring at Connie; he had a silly grin on his face. “Will you stop that?!” she said with exasperation. “Stop what?” he replied, still wearing that silly grin. “Stop staring at me with that silly grin on your face!” “I’m sorry, I can’t help it! You just look so…beautiful!” Connie turned her face away; she stared out the window for a few seconds. When she turned back to face Todd, there was sadness in her eyes. “Don’t – please don’t, Todd.” “I’m sorry. I guess I do bring back a lot of bad memories for you.” Connie reached out and took Todd’s hand. “Not anymore, I don’t blame you for what happened. I blame Stevie.” ****** At that moment, Steven (Stevie) Parker was sitting in his car. He saw the three Hardy men leave the Mi Tierra Mexican restaurant. Two minutes later Mrs. Hardy, Callie and Vanessa were walking out of the restaurant. A silver Honda Accord drove next to the three women. Joe got out of the car and gave Vanessa a hug and kiss. Steven’s grip on the steering became tight, so tight that his knuckles had turned white. He watched as the ladies got into another Accord, this one light blue in color. He stayed one car behind them as they left the restaurant parking lot.
Vanessa sat in the passenger seat; she was reading the directions that Fenton had given them to get back to their hotel. Laura glanced into the rearview mirror and frowned. “Mrs. Hardy, you were supposed to turn left.” “I know but I think we’re being followed.” Callie sat forward. “Are you sure?” “I haven’t been a detective’s wife for eighteen years to not know when I’m being followed!” Vanessa lowered the car window and adjusted her side mirror. “Where is he?” “Two cars back, the beige VW bug. Callie, do you have your cell phone?” “Yes and it’s all charged up!” “Good, call Frank, find out where they went to….I don’t want to drive back to the hotel and I don’t want to try and lose him. Who ever this person is might know the city a lot more than we do!” Callie had Frank on speed dial, she punched in his number. ******* Joe took out a piece of paper that had Todd’s cell phone number. He let Todd know that Mr. Hardy would speak with him. Todd gave him directions to the Denny’s that Connie had taken him to. “Who was that?” asked Connie. “Joe, the young man you met earlier.” “What did he want?” “To let me know he was on the way.” He saw the puzzled expression on Connie’s face. “He’s going to help me…us. Help us find Stevie and keep him away from us.”
