CHAPTER 14

“There’s the restaurant, Dad,” Frank said pointing out the large Denny’s sign. “I can see Coach, and he’s not alone.”

Fenton found a close parking space and eased the car to a stop. “Do you know who she is, Joe?”

“Sorta – I bumped into her as I going to meet up with Frank. Her name is Connie Garcia and she’s supposedly an old friend.”

Fenton gave a slight nod of his head to let Joe know that he heard him. He entered the restaurant with Frank and Joe behind him.

Todd had seen Joe walk in; he got out the booth and rose to greet his star player and family.

“Mr. Hardy, thank you for agreeing to speak with me. This is my friend, Connie Garcia – she’s somewhat involved in the matter I want to discuss with you.”

Todd had moved to sit next to Connie while Fenton, Frank and Joe sat on the opposite side. The waitress came to the table; she refilled the coffee cups for Todd and Connie and went to get three more cups of coffee for Fenton and his sons. As soon as the waitress brought the coffees, Fenton gave his full attention to Todd.

“Joe tells me you needed to speak with me, Mr. Butler – how can I help you?”

Todd silently stirred his coffee; he fidgeted in his seat, not sure how to begin. He felt a hand softly touch his, and turned to see Connie smiling at him. Encouraged by that smile, Todd took a deep breath and began talking.

Flashback

Seventeen-year-old Todd Butler didn’t understand what was going on. The police had come to his home and informed his parents that he had been seen vandalizing several building with graffiti. They were now taking him in for questioning for two grocery store robberies. Daniel Butler, Todd’s father, followed the police cruiser to the station.

Todd and Mr. Butler sat inside one of the interrogation rooms. There was a small television set sitting in the corner. The both looked up when the door opened. A man entered the room; although he wasn’t very tall, he stood about 5’9/10 inches tall. But to Todd this man seemed huge! His shoulders where slightly stooped as he carried the weight of the world on them. His face was lined and made him look weary as if he had seen far too many disturbing things in his life. He held a video tape in his hands.

“Hello, I’m Det. Ramos. Todd I know you’re scared, but if you confess to your crimes I can make things very easy for you.”

“I didn’t do anything!” Todd protested.

“Mr. Butler…”

Mr. Butler put his arm around his son. “If my son said he didn’t do it…then he didn’t, and I believe him.”

Det. Ramos didn’t say anything; he went over to the television and put the video into the VCR.

“This is a security tape from one of the stores. I think you’ll change your mind when you see this.”

As Todd watched the tape, he sat up a little straighter as he stared at the screen. “That’s not me!”

“It sure looks like you,” commented Det. Ramos.

Todd turned and stared hard at his father. “Dad…he looks like me! Who do we know that can pass for me?!”

End of Flashback

“The detective couldn’t believe it when I asked to be fingerprinted. But I knew my prints wouldn’t match!”

Joe leaned forward. “I don’t understand. Did someone disguise themselves to resemble you?”

Todd shook his head. “Not exactly – you see, I have a cousin who could be my twin.”

“The resemblance is uncanny!” Connie added.

“His name is Steven Parker; we were born a month apart. His family lived in Corpus Christi. When I was four, they moved here. My uncle found a better paying job here. That was the first time everyone noticed that we resembled each other. Same hair color, same eye color, same build. It was weird and fun! But then my uncle lost his job….he got depressed, started drinking…to make matters even worse…Stevie…he had a learning .disorder…he was…is dyslexic….things got really bad for Stevie. His parents were always harping on him…”Why can’t you be like your cousin Todd? Todd gets straight ‘As’ in his report card – Todd made the football team – Todd, Todd, Todd!”…I think it threw my cousin over the edge, because after that he started dressing like me. He pretended to be me!”

“That’s when the vandalism and the robberies started but they weren’t the worst things he did.” Connie said softly.

Todd squeezed her hand. “The worst thing…he almost raped Connie.”

Callie slammed her cell phone shut. “He must have left it in his room, I keep getting his voicemail!”

“Don’t panic, I see a gas station and it’s very well lighted. Fenton has always told me to go to a well-lit area. Let’s go in there; I’m sure we can get the clerk to call the police.” Laura said as she turned into the gas station.

Parking the car near the door, Laura, Callie and Vanessa hurried inside.

Steve saw them turn into the gas station parking lot. He did the same and parked by the side of the building. Walking up front, he peered into the window to try and locate his prey.

While Mrs. Hardy was speaking with the clerk, Callie standing by her side, Vanessa happened to turn and saw a familiar figure.

‘Oh thank goodness, there’s Coach Butler! I bet he’ll help us out!’ Vanessa thought as she headed out the door.

Steve was going back to his car when Vanessa called out.

"Coach Butler, wait up!”

Steve turned the corner and hid in the darkness.

Vanessa quickened her steps, it wasn’t until she went around the corner that she realized her mistake.
