CHAPTER 14

Just as Vanessa came face to face with the man she thought was Todd Butler, someone drove into the parking lot. The headlights of the car allowed Vanessa to get a better look at the man she had been following. She noticed that his hair was longer and had a stringy look to it. This man had a leaner build than Todd, who was almost as muscular as Joe. Although his eyes were hazel, the seemed browner in color, whereas Todd’s had a greener tint.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were someone else.”

Vanessa started to back away but Steve quickly grabbed her arm and flung her against the wall. Vanessa hit the back of her head hard when she struck the wall. She tried to stay conscious but failed. Steve caught hold of her as she slid down. He carried Vanessa to his car and opened the trunk; he then threw her inside and slammed the trunk closed.

Steve got into his car and drove out the back way.

As the clerk called the police, Laura thought to try Fenton’s cell phone.

“Callie, ask Vanessa to give Joe a call in case I can’t reach Fenton.”

Callie turned around; when she didn’t see Vanessa she walked to the back of the store, thinking that the other girl had gone to get something to drink. She noticed the public restroom and went to see if Vanessa was in there. She knocked on the door marked “Ladies” but got no answer. Callie quickly hurried over to Mrs. Hardy.

Laura had reached Fenton and was telling him what had occurred when Callie tugged her arm.

“Mrs. Hardy, I can’t find Vanessa!”

As Connie was about to tell Fenton what had happened to her, the chirping of his cell phone put a stop to that.

“I’m sorry; I normally turn this thing off,” Fenton said sheepishly. “It’s probably my wife letting me know she got to the hotel safely.”

Connie gave him a smile, letting him know that she understood.

“Hello, Laura…” Fenton paused as he listened to his wife speak. “We’re on our way!” Quickly ending the call, he stuffed the phone back into his pocket.

“Someone was following your mother and the girls…she pulled into a gas station to call the police…” Fenton put an arm around Joe’s shoulders. “Vanessa is missing.”

“Do you think it was Stevie?!” Connie turned towards Todd, her face etched with fear.

“Let’s not jump to any conclusions,” Fenton said, “Unfortunately, in my business I have a lot of enemies.”

“As do Joe and I,” Frank added.

Fenton slid out of the booth, he reached for his wallet but Todd held out his hand.

“I’ve got this, Mr. Hardy – go find Vanessa!”

                                                          *******

As Steven Parker drove down the alley, he wondered where he could go to hide the blonde girl. He didn’t want to take her to his home; his nosey neighbor Mrs. Abrahams was always watching him from her front window. But he needed to go somewhere that Todd was familiar with. A giggle escaped his lips. Steven knew just the place!

As Vanessa regained consciousness, she wondered why it felt so hot and stuffy. It wasn’t until she lightly bumped her head that she realized she was in the trunk of a car. She also became aware of a pounding in her head.

“Either Joe has a really hard head or he’s been lying to me all this time! This really hurts!” Vanessa moaned. “And who is Coach Butler’s evil twin?”

Vanessa didn’t know how long she had been unconscious or how long her abductor had been driving, when she felt the car slowing down. She might not where she was, but Vanessa knew that she wasn’t going to give her abductor an easy time. Lying still, she closed her eyes and waited – she was not going down without a fight!

As Steven drove down the darkened street, he was glad that his parents never sold their home. He knew he didn’t have to worry about them being home. They had gone to Corpus Christi to visit his grandparents. Parking the car in the driveway, Steven got out of the car. Walking to the front of the VW bug, he opened the trunk.

Vanessa heard the trunk open. She opened her eyes just enough and saw a shadowy figure hovering over her. Acting quickly, she kicked her leg out, and smiled when she felt the impact.

Steven didn’t know what happened. One minute he was standing there looking down at the young blonde woman. Then he felt a sharp pain in his chin as the blonde’s foot connected with his jaw. He stumbled back a few steps, lost his balance and fell down hard on the ground.

Not wasting any time, Vanessa scrambled out of the trunk and ran. She started screaming for help, hoping to see lights being turned on in one or two of the homes. But the street remained dark.

When Steven saw Vanessa get out of the trunk, he let out a low growl as he got up and chased after her. She had a good head start but Steven was gaining on her. He reached out and grabbed a handful of hair. Vanessa cried out in pain when she felt the man yank on her hair.

Holding tightly to Vanessa’s hair, Steven slapped her face hard. Not to be outdone, Vanessa clenched her fist and struck her assailant in the shoulder. Suddenly she gasped in pain; Vanessa almost fell over when she was hit in the stomach.

Pulling her arms back, Steven dragged Vanessa back to the house. As they came near the house, he hissed in her ear: “You can scream all you want…but no one is going to hear you! And the ones who do – don’t give a damn!”

He took Vanessa to his old room and tied her to the bed. I t was time to go visit his cousin.
