THE CHAPTERS |
Connie had dropped Todd off at the hotel; he waved goodbye to her as she drove off. Stuffing his hands in his jacket pockets, Todd headed towards his room. He came to an abrupt stop when someone stepped out of the darkness. “Hi Todd,” a familiar voice said softly. “S-Stevie?” “I’m a little old to be called that anymore,” he softly chuckled. “Yeah, I guess you are,” Todd replied. “What are you doing here – how did you know I was here?” “I saw your picture in the paper. They did a feature on all the top teams.” Steven came out of the darkness. Todd noticed the bruise on his cousin’s face. “You’re hurt – how did that happen?” Steven touched his chin; he seemed confused as he felt his tender skin. “Nothing you should worry about.” Stepping closer, he looked hurt when Todd moved away from him. Steven stared down at his feet, and then raised his head to face Todd. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry – sorry for all of the trouble I caused you…” “You’re sorry?! You make people believe I’m a vandal and a thief – and let’s not forget the fact you tried to rape my girlfriend!” “I did not! She wanted me! She…” “Connie thought she was with ME!” At least Steven had the decency to look guilty, Todd thought.” “I saw your new girlfriend.” Steven blurted out. “My new – Steven, please tell me you didn’t…” “Don’t worry, she’s safe and as soon as I find that blonde guy – you won’t have to worry about him taking her from you.” Too shocked to reply, Todd stood staring at his cousin. Steven just smiled at Todd and then turned and ran down the sidewalk. “Stevie wait!” But it was too late, Steven Parker was gone. ******* As they arrived at the gas station, Joe jumped out of the care before Fenton had come to a complete stop. He had seen Laura inside talking with a police officer. Frank was right behind Joe; he placed his hands on his brother’s shoulders to try and calm him down. Joe stood in front of Laura, his body shaking with fear. His blue eyes implored her to tell him everything was okay. As Laura gazed into her younger son’s face, she saw the little boy he used to be. The little boy who believed with all his heart that his mother could solve anything with a hug and a kiss. She wished that she could do that now. “What happened, Mom?” Joe asked softly. “I don’t know honey. One minute she was standing by Callie and then she just seemed to disappear!” Fenton was speaking to the clerk; he then turned to Laura and his sons. “Laura, I’m going to the back room with Terrence and Officer Burke. They have security cameras set up around the station. Apparently they’ve been robbed a few too many times. Terrence is going to let Officer Burke and me see the tapes.” “Dad, I want to…” “Sorry Joe, you have a curfew…” “But Dad!” “I know you’re worried about Vanessa but would it be fair to your teammates if you’re suspended from the team because you missed curfew? I promise to call you as soon as I find out anything new.” Joe knew Fenton was right, it wouldn’t be fair to the team but…this was Vanessa! He felt Frank gently squeeze his shoulders. With a sad sigh Joe turned around and headed out the door. “Frank, take your mother and Callie back to the hotel. Make sure your brother gets back before his curfew.” Laura gave Fenton the car keys, then followed Frank and Callie to the car. As they drove back to the hotel, Frank and Joe questioned Laura and Callie about the car that had been following them. “The only thing I can tell you is that it was an older model VW bug, it looked like it was beige in color, but then it could have just been dirty!” Frank and Joe had to smile as Callie agreed with Laura’s description. “I wish I had a better look at the license plate!” Callie said sadly. “Don’t knock yourself, Callie. You and Mom got a good description of the car,” Joe said. Frank had come to a stop, waiting for the traffic light to turn green. While waiting for the light, he noticed that they were by the Denny’s restaurant. If Frank hadn’t been so worried about his brother, he would have seen the beige ’77 VW sitting in the parking lot. ******* Steven was coming out of the restaurant with a container of food. At that moment, Joe had faced forward in his seat. Catching a glimpse of Joe, Steven walked closer to the street. As the silver Accord passed by, he was able to get a better look. Steven ran back to his car, he tossed the food container in the back seat. He sped out of the parking lot, hoping that he wouldn’t lose sight of the car. Steven was cursing his bad luck; he kept catching all of the red lights. Although traffic was light, he didn’t want to be caught running a red light. Because of the Bowl game, the San Antonio police department was out in full force. Steven smiled when he saw that his luck had changed; he caught sight of the Accord as it turned into the Sheraton Hotel parking garage. Frank parked the car near the entrance elevators, and got out to escort Laura and Callie back to their rooms, Joe opted to stay with the car, but got out to give Laura a hug and kiss good night. Callie gave Joe a quick peck on the cheek. He waved goodbye to Laura and Callie as the elevator doors closed. Joe was about to get back into the car when another car came up from behind. When he saw the VW, Joe’s heart started racing. The driver-side door opened. At first mistaking the man for Todd, Joe soon realized he was facing Steven Parker. He slammed his door shut, walked between the two cars, and grabbed Steven by his collar. “What have you done with Vanessa?!” Joe growled. “Get in the car and I’ll take you to her.” Joe didn’t release his grip; he glared at Steven for a few moments, then let him go. He then went over to the passenger side and got in. Five minutes later Frank came back; he stood staring at the now empty car. “What happened to Joe?”
