CHAPTER 17

The two young men were hurrying towards their destination. One man was driving a dark blue sedan, speeding his way towards Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan. The other was riding in the backseat of a limo, which was making its way towards Lenox Hill Hospital, also in Manhattan.

The man driving the sedan was 28 years old. His normally wavy brown hair was a mess as he continued to run his hand through it. He was a police detective for the city of New York; he had been in this situation before. But it was still nerve-wracking.

He had been away from his desk when the call had come in. His wife had gone into labor while out shopping with his sister. Thank God for Gertrude! For once he was glad that his sister was visiting them. At least he knew his wife would be all right and so would his young son—who was about to become a big brother. Fenton Hardy sighed with relief when he finally arrived at the hospital.

                                         *****

The second man, also 28 years old, had dark blonde hair and green eyes. He was praying that his wife was going to make it through this birth, as would his child. They had tried for so long. They had married young and against their parents’ wishes.

When Jack Reynolds had first met Sarah Parker, he knew they were meant to be together. Jack had been an only child; Sarah had come from a large family. Sarah was very close to her siblings and wanted to share that same closeness with her family. Jack wanted to experience that kind of close-knit family life. After several miscarriages, the Reynolds had decided to adopt. Jack smiled as he thought about his three-year-old son, Shane. He only hoped that Shane was going to have the pleasure of being a big brother. Jack Reynolds sighed with relief when he saw the hospital entrance.

                                           *****

Fenton stood in front of the nursery window, his eighteen-month-old son, Frank, in his arms. His older sister Gertrude stood by his side. They watched as a nurse placed, “baby boy Hardy” in his small bed, then wheeled it closer to the window.

Little Frankie felt the excitement and joy radiating off his father and auntie. For a long time now, his mommy and daddy had been telling him he was going to be a big brother soon. He had gotten scared when mommy’s tummy started hurting. But his auntie had assured him that everything would be okay. He looked at his daddy and auntie, who were making funny noises at the window. Turning his head to see what they were looking at, Frankie saw a baby swaddled up in a blanket. The baby didn’t look very happy; its face was read and it was crying, its eyes shut tight. Then the baby opened his eyes, and Frank leaned closer as he gazed into the bluest eyes he’d ever seen. As Frank pressed his face to the window, the baby suddenly stopped crying.

“Look, he’s looking right at Frankie!” Fenton said.

“Oh, Fenton, don’t be silly! The baby’s too young to make out any shape or forms.”

But Fenton Hardy would always swear that his little Joey could see his brother Frankie.

                                         *****

Jack Reynolds sat next to his wife, who was sleeping. They had a little girl, but the doctors weren’t sure if the baby was going to make it through the night. How was he going to tell Sarah that the baby they had waited for…Jack sighed. Their baby girl had been born with a heart defect, an enlarged heart. Her heart was too big and weak to pump enough blood and oxygen into her body. How ironic, you would think if you had a big heart it would be strong. But the doctors had told him that the muscle tissue was too fatty, it weakened the heart and made it work harder.

‘At least we still have Shane. And if we have to…we’ll adopt again.’

Jack thought as he sat quietly by his wife’s bed. ‘Besides, the doctors did say she had a better chance of surviving in this day and age than say…ten or twenty years ago.

Baby girl Reynolds proved to be a fighter; she survived the twenty-four hour period…and the following night and the night after that. The doctors were optimistic that with special medication that the baby would celebrate her fifth birthday.

                                           *****

Once again, she proved them wrong. Miracle Sarah Reynolds was about to celebrate her seventh birthday when she was kidnapped.

Jack sat in his den, his wife was upstairs crying. Their son had been sent to his grandparents as a precaution. The FBI men were setting up a tracer on the phone; they were hoping to find the kidnappers before any harm came to Miracle. Jack felt as they were running out of time. Miracle had been coming down with a cold, who knew if the kidnappers were keeping her in a warm place? He had to do something!

Jack absently picked up the newspaper that lay on top of his desk. He briefly scanned the headlines when a byline caught his attention. It was a story about a former New York detective who had become a private investigator.

Fenton Hardy, a former New York detective, has successfully captured Mark Dawson. Dawson was the main suspect in the kidnapping of Jonathan Banks, head of Billington Mutual.

Hardy had suspected the kidnapping was by a former employee…Hardy first came to fame when he rescued his own son, Joe Hardy, from Miles and Darla Nightingale. The Nightingales…

Jack put the paper back down. He recalled reading about a child’s kidnapping. An idea began to form in Jack’s head. He took out his cell phone, not wanting the FBI agents to know what he was about to do. They didn’t realize the urgency of finding his daughter.

“Samuel, it’s me…no, they haven’t found her yet…I need you to get me a phone number…I want to get hold of Fenton Hardy. He’s from Bayport…that’s right, that Fenton Hardy!...I don’t care what Agent Fuller said!...thank you, Samuel.”

Agent Fuller always thought that Fenton Hardy had caught a lucky break. After interviewing the household staff, Fenton was the only one who had found the missing piece to the puzzle. Because her parents wanted to give Miracle as normal a childhood as possible, she attended a public elementary school. Every morning her mother would take her to school. Every afternoon the family chauffeur would pick her up from school.

On the day of her kidnapping, a new driver had gone to get her. No one had thought anything when the driver was ten minutes late in getting back home. It had always been assumed that Miracle had been taken when she had been out in the garden. Fenton realized that Miracle never made it home in the first place. The driver, John Dixon, had taken Miracle to a drop off point. Clare Dixon, John’s wife, was helping her husband. She had waited for him to bring Miracle and then she drove out to their small home.

John and Clare Dixon were taken to jail, Miracle was brought safely back home, just in time to celebrate her seventh birthday. Grateful for what Fenton had done, and finding out that Joe shared the same birthday. Jack invited the Hardys to Miracle’s party. The days were still warm and the swimming pool was ready for children to have some fun. Normally he didn’t associate with his clients once a case was done, but for some reason Fenton felt a kinship with Jack.

                                           ******

Jack wondered why it wasn’t raining. Shouldn’t it be raining when you bury someone you love? He felt someone squeeze his hand, and smiled down at his daughter. Miracle had the same dark blonde hair as his, with lighter blonde highlights streaking through. Her emerald green eyes shone brightly with unshed tears. Standing next to Miracle was Shane; he had his arm around her shoulders. His reddish-brown hair hung past his collar.

Across the other side, nine-year-old Joe Hardy looked sadly at Miracle Reynolds. He couldn’t begin to imagine what it would be like to lose your mother. Joe took hold of his mom’s hand and held it tight. Laura Hardy looked down at her blonde, blue-eyed son; she then looked over at the two Reynolds’ children. Then nine-year-old girl who looked so thin and frail, her twelve-year-old brother who looked so sad and angry. Her eyes sought out Jack Reynolds and her heart ached. She leaned into Fenton and felt his arm go around her waist. Laura couldn’t imagine what she would do if she ever lost Fenton…and she didn’t want to.

That was the last time that Fenton Hardy saw Jack Reynolds. It would be eight years till he heard from him again.

Present Day

Fenton was at home in his office doing some paperwork. It was the one thing that he disliked about being a detective. When the phone rang, he thanked whomever the patron saint was for paperwork, and answered the phone.

“Fenton Hardy speaking.”

“Fenton, I hope you remember me, Jack Reynolds.”

“Jack! Yes of course I remember you! It’s been a long time, how are you?”

“I’m fine…Fenton…I’ll understand if you turn me down, after all, we haven’t spoken in eight years and now I’m calling on you for help.”

“Jack, I would never turn down a friend. Even a lax one. What can I do?”

Fenton heard Jack breath a sigh of relief and then listened to what he had to say.
