Frank thought that they could also get Shane to help them. He knew how much the young man cared for his younger sister. He was just about to call Shane when the phone rang. “Frank,” Laura poked her head in his room. “You have a phone call, it’s Shane Reynolds.” “Thanks, Mom!” Frank went into the hallway and picked up the phone, giving his mother a smile as she went into her room. “Frank, tell Shane and Mr. Reynolds that I’ll be keeping Miracle in my prayers tonight.” “I will Mom.” Frank waited for Laura to close the door; he then took the phone into Joe’s room. The phone extension cord would only reach that far. “Hello Shane, I’m glad you called. If you hadn’t I was going to give you a call.” {“You were? Frank, I don’t care what my Dad said this morning. I still want your dad to say on.”} “I’m glad to hear that. That was one of the reasons I was going to call you. I wanted you to know that Joe and I were not going to back out. We already planned to stay at the hospital and keep an eye on Miracle.” {“How were you going to do that? Only family members are allowed to visit her.”} “I figured that, but the waiting area isn’t off limits. I called to find out what room Miracle is in. Joe went to check it out and her room is right across from one of the waiting areas.” {“Is he there now?”} “Yes, he wanted to take the first watch. Tony will take over after nine, after he closes up Mr. Pizza. Then Biff after him and then I take the last one. I’m sorry we can’t be there during the school hours…”
{“Don’t worry about that, I’ll be there! Frank…I can’t believe…your
friends are willing to help?!”} A felling of pride coursed through Frank; he new that he could always count on his friends. “Yeah, they are really good friends. And they like Miracle.” {“Just don’t let my Dad see him there! He’s liable to have him thrown out!”} Frank chuckled. “Don’t worry, you don’t know my brother! He’ll make sure he’s not seen.” After giving Shane his mother’s message, Frank hung up the phone. He hoped that Joe was being careful. ***** They had announced that visiting hours were over, Joe watched Mr. Reynolds reluctantly leave Miracle’s room. He was glad for the Unisex restroom as he peeked through the door. Joe waited a few minutes longer, then slipped out of the restroom. Slowly making his way towards Miracle’s room, Joe saw that the nurses’ station was a few feet away. Seeing that the few nurses who were there were occupied. Joe snuck inside Miracle’s room. Miracle had her head turned away from the door. A small oxygen tube was in her nose; he could hear the low blip from the heart monitor. “Hi Miracle,” Joe said softly. Joe was glad to see a small smile on her face. “Visiting hours are over, you know.” “Really? I must have missed the announcement.” “Joe…I’m sorry about…” “It’s okay, Miracle. Frank and I wanted to tell you, but we couldn’t. I’m sure sorry you had to learn about the phone calls the way you did.” “That note didn’t help either. What’s this all about? What did it mean…’Tell your dad to pay up or his daughter will die sooner than he wants!’” “We think a disgruntled employee or someone your dad crossed wants to make him pay for their misery.” “Okay, but why threaten me?!” “Because they know how much your dad cares for you. Whoever they are figures that if they hurt someone you love…you’ll do anything to keep them safe.” “Does your dad know who might be behind all this?” “Um…well, not yet, and he may not be able to. Your dad…um…he decided to pay their demands. He’s not going to let us find out who is behind the threats.” “Then why are you here?” “Two reasons…I meant what I said. I really do like you, Miracle. I always have.” “I know you do. What’s the second reason?” “Frank and I never quit.” ***** The young woman hacked into the hospital computers. An almost feral smile crossed her face as she looked up at her male companion. “She’s scheduled for an X-ray in an hour.” “Perfect! We won’t have to worry about them freaking out when the heart monitor is taken off. You still got Aunt Minerva’s old nursing uniform?” “Yes I do. What about you?” “I found out what color the janitorial employees wear. Already got one.” “Let’s get going, then! Our five million dollar baby is waiting for us!” “Mom and Dad would be proud!” ***** Joe stayed talking with Miracle. Since it was a private room, there was a small closet. Whenever they heard someone coming down the hall, Joe would jump inside the closet and wait till Miracle said it was safe to come out. Joe was just stepping out of the closet when a nurse came in pushing a wheel chair. Joe had barely enough time to go back in. For some reason he peeked through the crack in the door. “Hi, I’m here to take you down to X-ray.” Joe watched as the nurse helped Miracle into the chair. He thought she looked pretty. She wore a floral top and green pants. As his eyes traveled downward, Joe frowned. ‘Those aren’t nurse’s shoes. Why is she wearing such uncomfortable shoes?’ Joe suddenly realized that she wasn’t a nurse! No nurse in her right mind would wear Doc Marten boots for work! He jumped out of his hiding place and spun the young woman around. “You’re not taking her anywhere!” “What are you doing here? Only family members are allowed!” “Joe, what’s wrong?” Miracle was trying to see what Joe was doing, and didn’t notice the janitor enter the room. Joe had his back to the door; it wasn’t until he felt the jarring pain in the back of his head that he realized his mistake. He tried to stay conscious but lost the battle as he slumped to the floor. “Jordan, thank goodness you came in when you did!” “Yeah, but what are we going to do with him?” “We have to take him, he saw me! We can’t have him telling the police. And as for you…!” Miracle looked up at the menacing face of the nurse. “One peep out of you and your friend is dead!” Jordan opened the lid of the large trash can. He unceremoniously dumped Joe inside. “Tight fit but it’ll do in a pinch, right sis?!” “Yeah, whatever, let’s get out of here!” No one paid attention to the janitor as he went past. Nor did they question the lab tech taking a patient to X-ray.
