CHAPTER 18

Aldo Prito looked over at his son who was just finishing storing all of the pizza trays away. His chest swelled with pride, he had a good son. Yes, he got himself in trouble sometimes, like the time he got caught toilet papering the Coach’s house. The Bayport Tigers baseball team had just won the division title and all of the players had celebrated by TP-ing Coach Daniels’ home. Unfortunately, a police cruiser had been passing by; most of the team had run. But not his Tony or the Hardy brothers, or Biff and Chet.

And now Tony was going to help protect a young girl. Aldo silently said a small prayer, to keep his son safe and for the young girl to get well soon.

“I’m done, I just have throw out the trash and then I’m off to the hospital to relieve Joe. I should be back by two a.m. So tell Mama that I’ll get some sleep before school.”

“Okay, but I don’t know if it’ll do any good. You be careful!”

“I will, night Pop!”

As Tony drove to the hospital, he thought about what Frank and Joe had told him and the rest of their friends about Miracle. Now he knew why she looked so pale. Quickly glancing at his watch, Tony saw that he was running forty minutes late; he hoped Joe wasn’t getting too impatient.

Tony soon arrived at the hospital, and took the elevator up to the tenth floor. When he stepped off the elevator, he expected to see Joe in the waiting area pacing the floor. The only thin he saw was Joe’s book bag. Digging in his pocket for some change, Tony went over to the payphone to call Frank. Raised voices caught his attention; Tony paused and then walked towards the sound.

“What do you mean you’re here to pick up the patient in room 1011? Someone already took her to X-ray!”

“That’s not possible! We’re short-handed at the moment and I’m the only one picking up patients, that’s why I’m late!”

Tony glanced over at Joe’s book bag, then over to Miracle’s room. He suddenly had a very bad feeling. Not caring what anyone would say to him, in four quick strides, Tony walked to Miracle’s room.

“Hey!” the nurse yelled. “You can’t go in there!”

Standing in the middle of the room, Tony saw the empty bed and a door that was slightly ajar. As the night nurse walked into the room, Tony turned around and ran out.

He ran towards the payphone, change spilling out of his pocket as he ran. With shaking fingers, he managed to put in the right amount for the call. Tony was nervously bouncing up and down as he waited for someone at the Hardy home to answer the phone.

Frank was in the kitchen when the phone rang. Noticing the time, he wondered if it was Joe letting him now that Tony finally made it there. He knew that Tony was running late, Mr. Pizza had been busy that night. Frank quickly picked up the phone.

“Hello, Hardy residence.”

{“Frank, you better get over here!”}

“Tony, what’s wrong?”

{“I’m not sure but I think…Joe and Miracle are missing.”}

Minerva walked quietly through the living room. She didn’t want to wake her nephew who slept on the couch. Entering the kitchen, Minerva hoped that there was still some apple pie left. She saw the empty pie pan on the counter and sighted. ‘I should have known. That Jordan is an eating garbage machine!’ Minerva shook her head; she decided to get some milk and Oreo cookies instead. Pouring herself a glass of milk and finding the unopened bag of cookies, Minerva went back to her room.

As she was passing by the couch, she stopped and suddenly realized that Jordan wasn’t there.

“He better not have gone out joyriding again!” Minerva mumbled angrily. She stomped over to her niece’s room and knocked on the door.

“Carla, I’m sorry for waking you but I need to know…”

Minerva had opened the door and turned on the bedroom light. She stood staring at the empty bed and wondered where Carla and Jordan had gone to.

“Joe and Miracle are missing”

Frank had dropped the phone and ran upstairs; without knocking he ran into his parents’ bedroom.

“Dad, wake up!” Frank vigorously shook Fenton’s shoulder.

“Frank?”

“Fenton, what’s wrong?” Laura mumbled sleepily.

“I don’t know, but I have a feeling Frank does.” Fenton sat up and turned on the bedside light.

“Joe and Miracle are missing!”

Now wide awake, Fenton stared dumbfounded at his son. “what do you mean, Joe and Miracle are missing? Why isn’t Joe in bed, he know better than to go out on a school night.”

“He didn’t…he was at the hospital…”

“Hospital!” Laura cried with shock. “Is Joe hurt?”

“No…I’m sorry…” Frank took a deep breath. “This morning, Miracle had trouble breathing, she was taken to the hospital…but before she left, she gave Joe a note she found…it was a threatening note…when Mr. Reynolds found out about it he freaked!...By the way Dad, Mr. Reynolds fired you.”

“And why am I just now hearing this?”

“Because Shane didn’t want us off the job and we didn’t want Mr. Reynolds to know that we were staying on…”

“I’d expect this kind of explanation from Joe but not from you…now why was Joe at the hospital?”

“I came up with a plan…Joe and the guys were going to keep watch over Miracle…Joe had the first watch…Tony was supposed to relieve him, but he was running late…when he finally got there….apparently Miracle was scheduled for some X-rays and the technician came to get her…only problem was…”

“Some else already took her.” Fenton finished. Throwing back the bed covers, Fenton got out of bed. “Honey, call Sam, Tell him to meet me at Bayport General. Frank, call Mr. Reynolds on your cell…I’ll call Ezra.”

“Tony! He’s still waiting on the line!” Frank ran back downstairs to end his call with Tony.

*****

Miracle huddled as close to Joe as possible. She was still in her hospital gown and the thin material wasn’t keeping her very warm. She was also worried about Joe. She didn’t know what was used to hit him. Hearing a door open, Miracle sat up in fright.

“I thought you might be getting cold. I brought you a blanket.”

Miracle looked up at the young man. He had dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He wore wire-rimmed glasses and had a goatee.

“Why…why are you doing this?” she asked him.

“Because we have to finish what our dad started.”
