“Joe”

Joe let out a small groan. Why did Frank always have to wake him up so early?

“Joe…Please wake up!”

Why did Frank sound like Miracle?

“Come on, Joe, open your eyes! Please!”

Joe then realized it was Miracle! What was she doing in his bedroom?! Joe started to roll onto his side when the night’s events came crashing into his memory. He opened his eyes only to shut them again as he felt a searing pain in the back of his head.

“Ooo…that hurt!” Joe moaned as he tried to sit up. He had to close his eyes again as the room began to spin.

“Joe, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m just waiting for the room to stand still.” Joe attempted to open his eyes again, and let out a relieved sign now that the room was back to normal. He turned his head to get a better look at his surroundings, and then turned to look over at Miracle and saw that she was still in her hospital gown.

Joe frowned when he saw her shivering. Without a second thought, Joe removed his Bayport Tigers sweatshirt.

“Here, put this on.”

“Joe, I can’t…what about you?”

“I still have a T-shirt on, I’ll be fine. Besides, you need this more than I do.”

“Thanks.” Miracle smiled at Joe as she put the sweatshirt over her gown. Her smile got bigger as she stared at Joe.

“What?” asked Joe, a curious frown on his face.

“Oh nothing, it’s just…you’ve definitely filled out since the last time I saw you in nothing in a T-shirt!” Miracle giggled. “Not as scrawny as I remember – Are your knees still knobby?”

At first Joe didn’t know what Miracle was talking about, and then it suddenly dawned on him what she was referring to.

“Hey! I was seven! All seven-year-olds have knobby knees!”

Joe stuck his tongue out at Miracle as he stood up; he wanted to check out the room they were in. He noticed the blanket covering Miracle’s legs.

“Hey, where did that come from?”

“Oh, one of the kidnappers gave it to me. I think his name is Jordan, that’s what I heard the fake nurse call him.”

“He must have been the one who knocked me out.” Joe carefully touched the back of his head. “What did he look like?”

“I’m not sure how tall hew was, since I was sitting on the floor. But he had dark hair and wore glasses. Oh, and he had a goatee.”

Joe knew that he should be trying to find a way out, but he was concerned about Miracle. He sat back down and moved closer to her.

“So, how are you? They didn’t hurt you, did they?”

“No, they put a blindfold on me and drove us over here.”

“Did it seem like they drove far?”

“I don’t know…they seemed to make a lot of turns and the ‘nurse’ kept saying that it was a good thing they kept the house.”

“Now we know we’re in a house!” Joe said with a  smile. “Are you sure you’re feeling okay? You look a little pale.”

“Joe, I always look pale.”

“Not this pale, and your lips look bluer than usual.”

“Because I’m cold. I’m fine, really…”

Joe noticed the pause. “But…?”

“My meds, Joe…One day without them won’t hurt me…but if we’re here longer than that?”

A determined look crossed Joe’s features; he had to get them both out of here.

*****

Shane stared worriedly at his father. Ever since finding out that Miracle had been kidnapped, Jack had plunged into a deep depression. Sitting at his desk, Jack held a picture frame in his hand, and stared at the photo – a family photo taken when Miracle was finally allowed home from the hospital. His family was sitting on the couch: Jack, his arm around Sarah’s shoulders. Sarah, cradling Miracle in her arms and Shane, sitting on his lap, gazing at his baby sister.

Jack smiled; even at the age of three, Shane had been very protective of his sister. There were times that Shane had resented the attention Miracle got. He recalled some angry outbursts when they had to cancel a planned outing because Miracle had been ill. The disappointment when he or his mother had to miss a game or school event because Miracle was in the hospital.

“I should have done what they asked when I received the first threat,” Jack sighed.

“I don’t think that would have mattered. From what Frank has told me, they would have just kept coming back for more,” Shane replied.

“Maybe, but at least your sister would be here, safe at home.”

“Dad, who’s to say the kidnappers wouldn’t have tried taking her from here?”

“He’s right, Jack,” said Fenton as he strode into the room.

Jack looked up, and saw Frank, followed by another man, enter the room.

“Jack, Shane, I’d like you to meet my partner, Sam Radley. He’s found something very interesting.”

That was when Jack noticed the folder in Fenton’s hand.
