Fenton Hardy and Sam Radley sat down in the two chairs in front of Jack’s desk. Frank went to sit with Shane on the small sofa. Fenton gave a slight nod to Sam who took the folder from his partner’s hand. “As you know, Mr. Reynolds,” Sam began, “we always suspected that the person who was making the threats was someone you knew. While Fenton checked out your former and current employees, he had me check on the Dixons…” “Are they out of jail – are thy the ones who have Miracle?” “No,” answered Fenton with a shake of his head. “John Dixon was murdered in prison two years after he was sentenced. Clare Dixon is still in prison, due to added jail time for an attempted jail break.” Sam added “But you do know who kidnapped my daughter!” “We suspect that John Dixon’s children are behind the threats and kidnapping…Jordan and Clara Dixon.” There was a loud crash and startled gasp. The men turned around to find Minerva standing at the door, the tray she had been carrying lying on the floor. A silver coffee pot, the contents spilling out. Cups and saucers broken from the fall. “Minerva, are you all right?” Jack gazed at his daughter’s nurse with concern. Fenton and Sam turned to each other; they seemed to be having the same thought. What had scared Minerva Adams? ***** Making sure that Miracle was comfortable, Joe began to search for a way out. He also wanted to find some clothes for her. He found a closet and looked inside, hoping to find a weapon to use. Joe saw some storage boxes. He opened on up and discovered some clothes inside. “Hey, I may have found something warmer for you to wear.” Joe wrinkled his nose; the smell of moth ball was very strong. “Ugh! Smells like my Aunt Gertrude’s closet!” Miracle go up off the floor and walked over to Joe. “What are you doing?” “It’s a fair bet that they locked us in here. Normally I would use my lock picks to get us out of here, but they’re in my book bag which happens to be at the hospital…sooooo, I need to find something I can use to open the door. Plus, I want to see if I can find some clothes for you. At least something warmer than that hospital gown.” “What about that window? Couldn’t we climb out of it?” “It’s nailed shut and I doubt they left a hammer in here.” “How ‘bout breaking the glass?” “That would make too much noise.” “Boy, you really know how to burst someone’s balloon!” Joe turned his head to give Miracle a smile; he then went back to searching inside the boxes. A sudden noise at the door caught their attention. “What are you doing in there?!” The faux nurse stood at the entrance. Her dark brown hair was pulled back. No longer dressed in the nurse’s uniform, she now wore a pink pullover shirt and blue jeans. “You must really like those Doc Martens,” said Joe. “I asked you a question – what are you doing in there?” “I’m looking for something warmer for her to wear! It’s cold in here and all she has is that hospital gown!” Joe glared at the young woman. He wondered if she were alone, and started to take a step forward. Sensing what Joe was up to; Clara narrowed here eyes and yelled. “JORDAN!” “What’s the matter, sis?” “Oh nothing, just Blondie over here was about to play the hero.” “He didn’t try and hurt you, did he?” “No, but he wanted to, I could see it in his eyes.” Clara stared at Joe for a few minutes. “Try the next box; I think there might be some of my old clothes in there.” Pushing her brother back, Clara closed and locked the door. Joe stood quietly staring at the closed door. “You know, if we can get Jordan alone…I bet we could convince him to let you go.” ‘Or I could trick him and we both could get out of here.’ ***** “This is all my fault! I’m so sorry, Mr. Reynolds! I’m so sorry!” “Minerva, what’s wrong with you? I’m sure you didn’t mean to drop that tray on purpose.” “No, that’s not what I meant!” Fenton approached Minerva and touched her shoulder. “Ms. Adams, do you know something about Miracle’s kidnapping?” “Y-yes,” she whispered. “J-Jordan and Clara – are my nephew and niece.” Sam went through the folder, flipping a few pages. “I don’t have anything on an aunt or any other living relatives.” “I’m not an aunt by blood.” Minerva took a deep breath, “Clare’s parents, they took in foster children. I came to live with the Adams’ when I was nine and didn’t leave until I was eighteen. I took their last name because they became my family, Clare and I grew to love each other like sisters. When we both left for college, we kept in touch but then the letters became less and less frequent.” Seeing how distraught she was, Fenton led Minerva over to his chair. “Thank you…Mr. Reynolds, I swear – I never knew that Clare and her husband had tried to kidnap Miracle. When I did find out later, I was afraid to tell you. I even kept myself away from Jordan and Clara! Then about a year ago, Clara showed up at the door. She needed a place to stay, and I felt so guilty for abandoning her…I told her she could stay with me for a little while. A few months after she showed up, Jordan came. They both behaved themselves; Clara even got a job working in the cafeteria over at Bayport High…” Frank jumped up. “That’s how that note got in Miracle’s locker!” “Minerva,” Jack Reynolds looked hopefully at her, “Do you know where they might have taken Miracle?” Minerva’s thoughts raced; hadn’t Clara mentioned something a long time ago? “Yes…yes I think I do!”
