As Joe lay on the floor, trying to get some sleep, he was feeling frustrated. He had hoped to get Jordan alone; Joe knew that he could convince the young man to let Miracle go. But Jordan never came in alone, his sister, Clara was always with him. Under normal circumstances, Joe would have tried to escape. Joe figured he could have been able to subdue Clara and Jordan. The only problem was the .22 that Clara kept pointed at Miracle. Joe was not going to chance Miracle getting shot at. At least he was able to find a pair of sweatpants that she could wear. Joe rolled over onto his side, staring over at Miracle. She seemed to be sleeping peacefully. They had used some of the other clothes to use as a pillow. Joe insisted that Miracle keep the blanket; thin as it was, it still provided her with some warmth. He had found a flannel shirt; it was a little large for him, but it made a perfect make-shift coat/cover. Joe yawned as he tried to get more comfortable, he closed his eyes as he drifted off to sleep. He hoped that the nightmare wouldn’t come. ***** Miracle opened her eyes; at first she wasn’t sure where she was. Then she recalled being kidnapped with Joe. Miracle lay still, she wondered what had caused her to wake up. Then she heard it…someone was crying. Miracle sat up, she could just make out Joe’s shape lying a few feet away from her. “Joe,” she whispered. A small whimper was the reply she heard. Miracle crawled over to Joe who was now lying on his back. Joe let out an anguished moan. Miracle couldn’t be sure, but she thought she saw tears streaming down his face. She reached out to place her hand on his shoulder when Joe suddenly opened his eyes. ***** Minerva remembered Clara telling her that she and Jordan still owned their family home. Their grandparents had bought it as a wedding present for their parents. Although none of the other relatives had wanted to take responsibility for the two young Dixon children, they did pay the property taxes on the house. To ease their guilty consciences, Clara always said. Minerva told Fenton the address. “Clara told me that she and Jordan sometimes use the house. I’m sure that’s where they are.” Fenton immediately called Ezra Collig, telling Jack they would need the help from the police. ***** It was 12:30 a. m. when the police cruisers rolled quietly into the deserted street. The neighborhood they drove into had seen better days. Chief Collig was thankful that the house they were looking for was located at the far end of a dead-end street. All his men were in place, now all they had to do was wait. Chief Collig checked his watch. Ten minutes till ‘lift-off’. ***** Joe knew what was going to happen, but there was nothing he could do to stop it. Iola was going to open the door and the car was going to explode. Joe struggled to wake up; he didn’t want to see it happen. Just when he knew he would see the fiery ball…a bright light flashed. Miracle jumped back when the bright light shone through the window, Joe turned, his eyes wide as he was still in the grip of his dream. “Joe what’s happening?” There was a loud bang which moved Joe into action. He quickly got up off the floor; he helped Miracle up and ran towards the closet. They would now hear voices screaming and yelling. When the door banged open, Joe stepped in front of Miracle, his body tense and ready to protect her. Joe broke into a grin when he saw who was standing in the doorway. “Dad!” ***** Joe didn’t know why had had to be in the hospital. It wasn’t like he’d never been hit on the back of the head before. “Hey, how are you doing?” Joe looked to see his brother pull back the curtain from his cubicle. Frank’s brown eyes were filled with worry and concern. “I’m fine, Frank. I have a hard head, remember?!” “Hard as a rock and just as dense!” Frank replied with a teasing grin. “Hey!” “Good come back!” Frank smiled at his brother; he then grabbed him into a hug. “I’m really glad to see that you’re okay. I was really worried about you.” Joe held tightly to Frank. “You and me both, big brother.” Reluctantly letting Joe go, Frank stepped back to have a better look at him. Satisfied that Joe did indeed look ‘okay’, Frank gave his younger brother some good news. “I’m actually here to take you home. Dad’s already signed the release forms.” “Yes!” Joe pumped his fist, smiling at his brother. What about Miracle?” “She’s back on the tenth floor. She was already scheduled for some kind of test.” “Oh. Do you think we could go see her?” “I don’t think they’ll let us in, Joe.” Seeing the glum expression on his brother’s face, Frank added. “But I guess we can try.” “Thanks, Frank!” ***** When Joe and Frank stepped off the elevator, they saw Jack Reynolds speaking with Dr. Moore. The two men began to walk towards the elevator. Jack saw them and smiled. “Joe, Frank, I want to thank you for not listening to me and staying on the case for Miracle’s sake. If you hadn’t, I might have lost her. How are you feeling, Joe? I heard you were injured?” “I’m fine, just got a knock on the head.” Joe gave Frank a stern look, not wanting his brother to make any comments. “Mr. Reynolds, would it be all right if I saw Miracle?” “She’s sleeping,” replied Dr. Moore. “I’d rather you wait till tomorrow. But I will say that she’s doing fine.” Although glad to hear that Miracle was doing well, Joe was disappointed that he had to wait. He let Frank lead him to the car. Arriving home ten minutes later, Joe had to convince Laura that he was fine. Not totally convinced, Laura questioned Joe for several minutes before she was satisfied that yes, he was fine. She then sent him up to bed. Now dressed in his own pajamas, Joe got into bed. A minute later, Frank walked into the room. He sat down on Joe’s bed. “So, do you want to hear how we found you so quickly?” “Considering the sun is about to come up in a few hours, sure, why not?!” Listening to Frank, Joe was fascinated by what Sam had found out. Soon his brother’s soft voice lulled him to sleep.
