Miracle sighed with relief; she was finally going back to school. She had missed a week of school, mostly due to her father, who had been afraid to let her leave the house. The only reason she was returning was that Miracle resorted to a tactic she hadn’t used in a long time: she threw a temper tantrum. Jack finally relented, and now Miracle sat in her brother’s car heading for Bayport High.

Shane glanced over at his sister and started to chuckle.

“What are you laughing at?”

“I can’t believe you actually threw a hissy fit just so you could go back to school. The look on Dad’s face…priceless!”

“You’re just jealous that you don’t have my talents of persuasion!” Miracle huffed.

Shane howled with laughter as he pulled into the high school parking  lot. As Miracle was getting out of the car, she stuck her tongue out at her brother. This only caused him to laugh even more.

“Miracle, it’s great to have you back!”

Miracle looked up to see Joe running down the school steps, a huge smile on his face. He took her book bag and placed it over his shoulder. Joe then took hold of Miracle’s hand and led her inside.

Shane watched the two teens, noticing the caring expression on Joe’s face and how his sister returned the feeling. He was glad that Miracle found someone who cared for her, but he also knew there was no future for them.

Shane sighed; he hoped Joe knew what he was doing. Glancing at the time, he then left for his first class.

The week passed by too quickly for Miracle. She knew that some people might think her odd for wanting to attend school. But she was enjoying finding new friends. As Miracle walked to her locker, she had to pause to catch her breath. She had a slight ache in her chest.

“Hey Miracle, are you okay?”  Tony’s face was filled with concern as he looked at the girl.

She gave him a wan smile. “Yeah, I’m fine, I guess I walked a little too fast.”

Tony stayed by her side until they reached the locker. Joe was waiting for Miracle, and he saw Tony walking with her. He started to smile but noticed the concerned look on Tony’s face.

“What’s wrong?” he asked Tony.

“I saw her leaning against the wall, looking a little faint.”

Joe turned to Miracle, who immediately downplayed her ailment.

“I’m fine! Like I told Tony, I was walking a little fast and had to catch my breath!”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, Joe, I’m positive.”

“I don’t know,” said Tony. “Think we should go get the nurse?”

“No, school’s over and Minerva will be picking her up. She’s still getting you, right?”

“Yes, Dad was able to convince her to stay with us.”

Now standing outside with Miracle, Joe and Tony waited along with her. Two minutes later, a car drove up with Minerva at the wheel.

“Miracle, will your dad be home tonight?” Joe asked a bit nervously.

“He should be there now. He said he was going to be working at home today. Why?”

“Um…no special reason.” Joe smiled as he backed away from the car.

“You ready to go home, Joe?”

Turning around, Joe found Frank waiting patiently for him by the van.

“Um, yeah, sorry Frank! See you later, Tony!”

Once inside the van, Joe turned to look at his brother.

“Frank, are you going to use the van later tonight?”

“Callie wanted to see the new Pirates movie.”

“Do you think Callie would mind picking you up? I wanted to go see Miracle later.”

“Her car is in the shop. I’ll ask Mom if I can borrow her car.”

“Thanks, Frank! Now all I have to do is think of a way to convince Mr. Reynolds to let me take Miracle out on a date tomorrow.”

Frank quickly glanced over at Joe, a worried frown on his face. “Joe, are you sure about this?”

“I know what you’re thinking, Frank. And I know what I’m doing. I just…” Joe sighed. “I don’t want you thinking that I’m doing this out of pity, I’m not! I like Miracle…a lot! If things were different…I want her to know what it’s like to have a normal day…going out with the one you love and having fun…Do you understand?”

His brother really amazed him sometimes. Frank waited till they came to a stop before he turned to Joe. “Yeah, I understand,” he said quietly, then he reached out and affectionately ruffled Joe’s hair.

It was just after seven p.m. that Joe found himself ringing the doorbell at the Reynolds’ home.

“Hi Joe, come to see my sister?” Shane smiled as he looked at a very nervous Joe Hardy.

“Actually, I came to see your dad. Is he home?”

Shane’s eyebrows shot up as he moved aside to let Joe in.

“He’s in the den.”

Much to Joe’s dismay, Shane followed him in.

“Dad, you have a visitor.”

Jack Reynolds had been reading the newspaper. With a curious glance, he looked up and saw Joe walking in.

“Hello, Joe! What brings you here?”

“I would like to take Miracle out on a picnic and a ride on our boat The Sleuth tomorrow.”

As Joe waited for an answer, he wondered who was more surprised by his request. Jack Reynolds or Shane.
