CHAPTER 18

Saturday morning the sun shone brightly, a slight breeze in the air. It was cool enough for a sweater. Joe was glad it wasn’t any colder. He was afraid Mr. Reynolds would change his mind if it were. He smiled as he though about how happy Miracle had been when he asked her out for a date.

Walking into the kitchen, Joe found Laura packing the picnic lunch he had asked her to fix.

“That looks pretty good, considering you got most of the recipes off the American Heart Association web-site.”

Laura Hardy had to laugh when she saw the disdainful look on her son’s face. She playfully swatted his shoulder. “Don’t give me that look! And don’t worry; you’re going to love it! Don’t let your father know this but I had him sample one of the sandwiches and he loved it! Never knew it was low sodium.”

“Your secret’s safe with me!” Joe replied. He gave Laura a quick kiss on the cheek as he took the basket. “Thank you for making lunch!”

“Anytime, sweetie! Be careful and have a good time!”

 *****

Miracle kept glancing over at Joe as he drove them over to the Marina. She had to smile as he ran his hand through his unruly hair, trying to tame it. Miracle thought that Joe looked very handsome. Then knitted blue sweater he wore seemed to make his eyes brighter.

Joe parked the van as close to the pier as possible. As Miracle was reaching for the door handle, Joe lightly touched hr arm.

“Wait right here, you’re getting the full Joe Hardy treatment!”

With a wink and a smile, Joe got out of the van and walked around to open the door for her. Taking her hand as she stepped out of the van.  Joe opened the side door, to retrieve the picnic basket; holding hands they headed over to the Sleuth.

As he helped Miracle onto the boat, Joe couldn’t help but admire how pretty she looked. Her hair was pulled back into a single French braid. She wore a light brown sweater and tan pants.

“Ready for a tour of the Bay?”

“Oh yes!”

As Joe headed out, he thought about where to have their picnic. There were small little islands scattered out around the Bay. Joe and Frank, along with their friends used to camp out on a few of the islands, imagining themselves as pirates or Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. There was one special place that Joe knew, one that he and Iola used to visit. But he wasn’t sue if it would be the right place to take Miracle.

It wasn’t until they arrived there, that Joe realized he had instinctively headed towards the little island. He maneuvered the boat towards a long rock that resembled a pier. Locating the jutting tree root, Joe tied the Sleuth and then helped Miracle off the boat.

Finding a cozy spot, Joe and Miracle spread out the checkered blanket. They say quietly for a bit, watching the waves hit the shore.

“How did you know where to find this place, Joe?”

“I used to come here,” Joe answered softly.

Miracle turned her head, his voice sounded so sad. Joe was staring off into space. There was a haunted look on his face as he began to speak.

“I used to bring my girlfriend, Iola, here…before…before she was killed…killed by a bomb that was meant for me and Frank.”

“Oh, Joe I’m so sorry!” Miracle squeezed his hand. “But I’m also…I feel so honored that you brought me here…This place must be really special to you…Thank you.”

Joe gave Miracle a sad smile, he then turned back to watch the waves. He felt Miracle lay her head on his shoulder; he placed his arm around her shoulders.

 *****

Later that night, as Miracle lay in her bed, there was a smile on her face as she thought about her day. She had to remember to thank Mrs. Hardy for packing the lunch. A giggle escaped as Miracle recalled Joe’s surprised face when he tasted the sandwiches. They were really tasty!

Miracle touched her lips; a slow smile crossed her face. Joe had walked her to the front door.

Miracle smiled at Joe. “I had a nice time, thank you.”

“Our date’s not over just yet.”

“It’s not?”

Joe shook his head. “Nope, it’s never over until…”

Pulling Miracle close, Joe bent his head and kissed her.

Letting out a small sigh, Miracle began to snuggle down when she found it hard to breathe. She had to sit up in order to catch her breath. Adjusting her pillows, Miracle found that the only way she felt comfortable was in an almost sitting position.

‘I probably shouldn’t have had some of those chips that Joe bought. Too much salt.’

 *****

The next few days, Miracle found it hard to catch her breath. She assumed that she was retaining too much water. Minerva had noticed the change and voiced her concerns. Miracle pointed out her swollen ankles and assured her it was nothing.

“I’ll be seeing Dr. Moore next week. I’ll be fine until then.”

Against her better judgment, Minerva didn’t say anything to Mr. Reynolds.

 *****

Joe waited anxiously for Miracle to arrive in the school cafeteria. He hadn’t liked the way she looked when he saw her that morning.

“Joe, are you okay?” Frank stared hard at his brother.

“I’m fine, just worried about Miracle.”

“Oh, is she feeling ill?”

“She says no, but…finally, here she comes now.”

Joe stood up and took a step to meet Miracle.

Her chest hurt…she couldn’t breathe…She entered the cafeteria and saw Joe…then everything turned black.

He started to smile at her…His smiling face turned to one filled with fright as he saw Miracle collapse to the floor.
