Joe ran over to Miracle; dropping to his knees, he felt for her pulse with a shaking hand. “Joe?” Frank knelt down beside his brother, and placed a hand on his shoulder. Joe raised his head to star at Frank, his blue eyes filled with worry. “I…I can barely…feel her pulse…it’s there, but it’s so…so weak!” “Excuse me, out of the way please!” The crowd of students parted to let the school nurse through. The brothers looked up in surprise to see her there so quickly. “Does anyone know what happened?” she asked. “I saw her walking in, a few seconds later she collapsed.” Joe replied. “I guess it’s a good thing I decided to buy a sandwich, then.” “An ambulance is on the way,” said Tony. “Biff made the call; he and Chet are outside waiting for it.” A few minutes later they could hear the siren’s wail as the emergency vehicle neared the school. The EMTs were soon running into the cafeteria, being led by Chet and Biff. “She’s wearing a Medical Alert bracelet,” the male EMT told his female partner. “Does anyone know her name?” “Miracle Reynolds – I’m Mrs. Johnson, the school nurse. Several weeks ago she had an A-fib episode.” Working quickly on Miracle, the EMTs soon had her on the gurney. “Let her folks know she’ll be at Bayport General!” The Vice-Principal, with the help of a few teachers, got the cafeteria in order, assuring the students everything was fine. Callie stood next to Frank, holding his hand. Biff, Chet and Tony stood behind him; Phil beside Callie. It was Phil who noticed they were missing someone. “Frank, where did Joe go?” No one had seen Joe leave with the EMTs. As they were putting Miracle into the ambulance, he convinced them that he was her brother. He now rode in the back; he wanted to sit and hold Miracle’s hand but knew that he would be in the way. So Joe sat as far back as he could while he watched the paramedic check on Miracle’s vital signs. “I know where he is,” Frank sighed. Frank had called home; he told Laura what happened with Miracle and his suspicion that Joe was at the hospital with her. Getting permission to leave school, he drove straight to Bayport General where he found Joe sitting forlornly in the emergency waiting room. Sitting down next to his brother, Frank laid his hand on his back. “How are you doing?” “A lot better than Miracle.” Joe let out a sigh. “I shouldn’t have taken out on the Sleuth….it was probably too cold for her…” “Joe, stop that! It’s not your fault! You know as well as I do that…that one of these days this was going to happen!” Joe didn’t answer, he knew Frank was right. He had read Miracle’s medical files but that still didn’t stop the pain he felt in his heart. “Frank, Joe! Where’s Miracle – what happened?” Jack Reynolds came striding in; fear and worry etched the features of his face. “We don’t know, Mr. Reynolds. Miracle just collapsed!” Seeing the same fear and worry on Joe’s face, Mr. Reynolds gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “I’m sure she’ll be all right… my little girl is a fighter!” “Mr. Reynolds, does Shane know that Miracle is in the hospital?” asked Frank. “No…I was so worried when the school called…” “I have his cell number; I’ll call him for you.” Frank took out his cell phone and walked outside to make the call. When he came back in, Mr. and Mrs. Hardy were with him. “How is she, Jack?” Laura went over to the distraught father. “I don’t know, I just got here…I should go find out…I’m sure Dr. Moore is with her.” At that moment, the doctor came out. His face was grim as he approached the small group. “How is she- is she going to be all right?” “I don’t know, Jack. It’s pneumonia and from what I’ve seen so far, she’s been sick for a long time.” Joe stood outside the ICU room, looking through the glass wall. Jack dressed in hospital scrubs and wearing a face mask, sat by Miracle’s bedside. One of Miracle’s lungs had collapsed and she had been intubated with an oxygen tube. He could see the heart monitor and watched the red dot as it went across slowly. Miracle was dying and Joe couldn’t understand why. How could someone die from pneumonia? Maybe if she had been a healthy seventeen-year-old…The infection had gone into her already weakened heart. Now her other organs were slowly shutting down. Once again standing outside the ICU room, Joe watched as Jack held a clipboard. Shane stood by his father’s side as they both stared down at Miracle. They knew there was no hope. “Not yet, Shane…I’ll sign it tomorrow…I can’t let her go just yet.” ***** Frank stood at the end of the hall; he stared sadly at his brother. Every day Joe came to the hospital and stood outside watching. And every day Frank followed him and waited till Joe was ready to go home.
