CHAPTER 18

Jack stood at the end of the bed and watched as Dr. Moore turn off the life-support. The nurses quietly removed the oxygen tube, closed down the IV drips. The only thing left was the heart monitor emitting the slow, soft beat of Miracle’s heart. Taking a step forward, Jack held Miracle’s hand; he wanted to let her know that she wasn’t alone.

“Daddy’s here, baby,” he whispered.

Shane had been standing by the window; he walked over and stood behind his father. He placed his hand over Jack’s. “I’m here too, squirt.”

Five minutes later, Miracle was gone.

Joe had seen Jack sign the forms to remove Miracle from the life-support. He watched the heart monitor, although he couldn’t hear anything, Joe imagined the sound as the heart rate became slower and slower until there was nothing but a flat line.

Joe swallowed the lump that was in his throat; he quickly turned and walked away.

Frank heard footsteps and was surprised to see Joe leaving so soon, and then he caught the distraught expression on his brother’s face.

“Joe…”

Joe looked at his brother; he wanted to tell Frank he was all right. To let him know that he didn’t have to worry about him. But one glance into Frank’s dark brown eyes, the worry and concern that shone in them…

Frank didn’t need to finish what he was going to say; one look at Joe and he knew what he had to do. Without another word, he grabbed Joe into a hug and held him tight. At first Joe stood stiffly in Frank’s arms. Suddenly his body began to shake. Joe took in a sharp breath,  and he sobbed once. That’s all it took, as the tears suddenly began to fall. Heart-wrenching sobs shook Joe’s body; he clung to Frank as his grief overwhelmed him. Grief for Miracle…grief for Iola…grief for the girl he had loved but hadn’t been able to cry over his loss.

A small part of Frank was relieved t hear Joe crying, he knew that Joe hadn’t grieved properly for Iola. The only time that he had cried for her was in his sleep. He just hoped that Miracle’s death wasn’t going to cause more trauma to his younger brother’s life.

It was raining the day of Miracle’s funeral. Shane stood quietly by his father’s side, and scanned the crowd that had gathered to pay their respects. He saw Tony, Biff and Chet standing together. Phil standing to the left of Frank, Callie on Frank’s right. Mr. and Mrs. Hardy…A frown furrowed his brow. Where was Joe?

He turned his head slightly, searching the grounds for Joe. As his eyes traveled back towards the mourners, Shane caught a glimpse of a blonde head.

Joe stood by a tree, several yards away from the grave. He waited till the service was over and the last person had left. Walking slowly over as the coffin was lowered into the grave, he stood in the rain, not caring how cold and wet he was becoming, when he felt a hand on his shoulder.

“Come on Joe; let’s get out of the rain.” Shane held an umbrella over their heads.

“I’m sorry Shane…I shouldn’t have taken her out on the Sleuth, it was too cold.”

“Do you think this is your fault?!” exclaimed Shane, a shocked note in his voice.

“If she hadn’t gotten so sick – maybe she could have gotten that heart transplant and…”

“No, Joe, that never would have happened. Miracle…she had a rare RH type. Dr. Moore told us that the odds were too great for a match.”

Shane could see that Joe didn’t want to believe him, so he tried getting through Joe another way. “She told me about that day,” Shane had a small smile as he spoke. “She told me how special you made her feel…how you gave her the full Joe Hardy treatment.”

A small chuckle escaped from Shane as he saw Joe blush. “Yeah, she even told me you kissed her. Miracle said that she finally knew what if felt like to be me! Just a regular teenager having her first date with the best-looking guy in high school.”

“She was a regular teenager.”

“Come on, before Frank comes and beats me to a pulp. I told him I wanted to get you out of the rain.”

“How’d you convince him to stay behind?!”

“I just used some persuasive actions I learned from Miracle.” Shane smiled as he looked over at the headstone.

Four months had gone by since Miracle Reynolds had passed away. The beginning of February had brought in more cold weather and snow…lots of snow!

Joe found that he no longer felt a pang of pain whenever he looked at Miracle’s old locker. He was putting some of his books away when Tony came bounding up to him.

“Hey have you seen the new girl?”

“No, is she pretty?”

“Pretty is not the word I would use! She’s beyond pretty!”

“Leave it to the Italian stud to find the pretty girl!” Joe teased.

“Stud is right and don’t you forget it!” Tony smiled back at his friend. “you and Frank coming by Mr. Pizza later?”

“I think so.”

“Okay, see you there!”

Joe found Frank waiting for him by the school door; the two brothers braced themselves for the cold air and walked out of the school. As they walked towards the van, Joe saw a tall girl with ash-blonde hair walking ahead of them.

“I wonder if that’s the new girl Tony was telling me about.”

Frank saw the girl come to a stop; as they came near they saw why she looked so glum. All four tires of her can had been slashed. Hearing their approach, the girl turned around and glared.

“Easy, we’re the good guys!” Joe held his hands up in a surrendering display.

“Sorry, but you can’t blame me for reacting the way I did.”

Frank had been slowly walking around the car. “Wow, they really did a job on your car. Would you like me to call a towing service?”

“Thanks, that would be nice. I really hope this isn’t some kind of initiation you do to new students!”

“No, the students here are really nice. Hi my name’s Joe Hardy and that’s my older brother Frank.”

“Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Vanessa Bender.”

As Vanessa smiled at Joe, she couldn’t help but think that he had the bluest eyes she ever saw. Maybe moving to Bayport wasn’t going to be so bad after all.

Joe held out his hand for a friendly shake, and when he felt Vanessa take hold…he could have sworn he heard a click. For some strange reason, holding her hand just felt…right!

“I also made a call to the police to report this vandalism…” Frank stopped speaking as he looked over at Joe and Vanessa. It appeared that they were in the process of shaking hands. Then stood smiling at each other, as they continued to hold each other’s hand.

‘This looks like the makings of a beautiful friendship.’ Frank thought.
